Jonathan will never play for Mexico again: Zizinho

Jona dos Santos comenzó con gran fuerzaSpeculation started when Jonathan Dos Santos was missing as the players headed for training on Monday. Giovani Dos Santos was reported to have jumped on to the field shedding tears by several media outlets. Nestor de la Torre then held a press conference confirming the news, and excused the player from being present as it had been previously reported that the 24th player would appear as well.

Gerardo Dos Santos’(Zizinho) reaction was quickly reported and it just seemed to be an emotional response. However, Jonathan’s father later gave an interview where he once again said the same things.

Zizinho initially spoke to Record after the news broke, saying

“We’re tired of how he’s been treated. It’s not the first time that they’ve done this and it’s enough. Jona will not play with Mexico again. They can never do this to him again. I love Mexico, I adore it, it’s my country even though I’m Brazilian, but they can’t hurt him this way. My problem is with the national team, but they will never do this to him again.

“If there were 23 players better than him, I wouldn’t say anything. There wouldn’t be a problem, but it’s not like that. There are many remaining because of interests it seems. Nothing against the players, but I don’t think that the decision was made correctly. What are they thinking about, what future does Mexico have? I thought Aguirre had character, but it seems I was mistaken and someone else makes the decisions.

“I’m disappointed. We’ve put up with a lot. From Chucho(Ramirez), they’ve always treated him badly and I made a mistake in accepting him to play with Mexico. It was always his dream. It wasn’t to play with Brazil or Spain who have looked for him because he an play with thm. What’s the use of taking a risk, leaving your country to play in Europe, to grow, if later they push you aside? Because he’s the youngest, that shouldn’t be a factor. Other national teams have taken players younger than he, thinking about a longer process.”

Later he spoke more in depth with ESPN about the situation.

“The family is not well. My wife and I are crushed. I don’t think it’s fair what’s happening with Jonathan. There’s been much deceit with the Federation, deceit with the managers. The people don’t know how to value the work of players in Europe, and I think that Mexican football is worse every time.

“The same thing happened with Chucho(Jesus Ramirez). There’s no respect for a kid of 20 years that’s working in the Barcelona reserves. He’s been working so he can play, so I don’t think it’s fair. He’s not on just any team; he’s with Barcelona, the best team in the world. He plays in segunda, he plays with the first team with Pep Guardiola, the best manager in the world. Pep is not just anyone.

“There’s people that shouldn’t be in the Mexican national team. I ask myself, “Where is the Mexican football that doesn’t believe in young players?” I ask myself, “Why not give opportunities to young players? Why don’t they cultivate the players that are rising? Where are those opportunities? We don’t do what Brasil and Argentina do. Ronaldinho and Ronaldo went the their first World Cup on the bench and then look where they made it. It’s happened with many players in the world.”

“Carillo made the decision. Javier doesn’t have the courage. I don’t have anything against “Bofo.” If he’s there it’s because of his work. But I think that things should be correctly done by managers. Where are the managers? Who makes the decisions, Aguirre or Carillo?

“I don’t think Aguirre has the courage. He just has it when he talks on television, but he doesn’t have cojones. He doesn’t have courage. The decision was made by Carillo. The jokes they make about Carillo on television about him making the decisions aren’t a joke any more. Where is his courage? What character does he have as a manager?

“I’m saying Carillo made the decision because Aguirre doesn’t have the character. Why did he go to Barcelona to look for Jonathan? Why does he go to Barcelona and say great things about him? To everyone he said Jonathan was going to the World Cup. Why did he lie to a child? He should have let Jonathan play the playoffs(with Barcelona Athletic) and enjoy him enjoy promotion to Segunda. It’s another failure for Jonathan.

“Mexico’s jersey is useless. Why is Giovani there? Mexican football is dirty. I don’t know what’s inside. Every person makes their own group. They don’t know how to work with people that should be in the group. There’s people on the outside that should be on the inside. There’s too many interests.

“It happened with Chucho. Now, Aguirre. My child will never put on Mexico’s shirt again. For me, it’s garbage. I respect Giovani, who’s with the team. Jona should put on Brazil or Spains shirts, there they will appreciate him. My sentiments toward the Mexican national team flipped completely but not because I’m the father, not because of that, but simply because you can’t do things like that to the future of Mexican football. Why did Nestor give the press conference? Why didn’t Aguirre or Carillo come out? Aren’t they the ones who made the decision?

“Do you think that Gio will last in the World Cup? Both of them called me crying. They were crushed. Why did Aguirre do this? He called him at the last moment. He took him to play against Gambia. He should have played with 23 players or with 27, and he should have cut four…not one because it’s more difficult when he’s still a child.

“Why a young one? It was easier. It’s easier that way. Why didn’t he speak with me first? What character Aguirre and Carillo have. That’s why Mexico fails. The same thing is going to happen with Mexico in the World Cup. Zizinho tells you that Mexico doesn’t exist. I liked the national team. I loved it and today I hate it. Gio is there, but now the national team will be a failure.

“I’m telling you, Jonathan will not wear Mexico’s shirt…He’ll go to Spain or Brazil.

The first words by Zizinho were seen as emotional and at some level it was understandable. Any parent would be upset if their child had been cut from the national squad, just a step away from playing in the World Cup.

And he was right about Jonathan being hurt by the Mexican federation several times. With the U-17 he was told he would not be joining the squad at the last minute and was asked to take of his national team garb. Again, with the U-20 Barcelona was asked to release the player although he wasn’t guaranteed a place with the team and in the end the player did not join the U-20 team.

He brings up many good points. Mexican football is corrupt, and many times it’s controlled or influenced by outside interests. And he’s right, it’s quite unfair that the federation has done this time and time again to the same player.

And it would have been better if Aguirre had announced the decision, but whether it was because he didn’t have the courage to face the media or because he had training to attend to remains unknown.

But despite all the points he makes, there are times where he’s wrong.

Jonathan is 20 years old, hardly a the child that he keeps on talking about. And it seems like he’s speaking for Jonathan by saying that he will never play with Mexico. Isn’t that Jonathan’s choice to make? This isn’t his last chance to make the World Cup, he’s 20. While it might have helped him tremendously, this isn’t his last opportunity.

And he may play in Europe and at Barcelona, but that doesn’t necessarily guarantee a spot on the squad. While there a few players that many don’t believe should be there they earned their spot in Aguirre’s eyes. He’s the national team manager, he’s the one that makes the decisions as much as people may not agree with it.

Unfortunately, he didn’t seem to remember that Giovani is on the team as well. Sure, Gio must be extremely upset that his brother was cut, but how will his father’s comments hurt him? Zizinho’s words were strong and seemed to almost wish the national team to fail.

Even if Jonathan had been selected in the final 23, he wasn’t guaranteed to play. So how can he say that it would have made a difference. A team is made up of 11 players, not just one and all teams can attest to that. Barcelona is a great team but Messi isn’t the only one on that team; Xavi is a great part of why that team performs the way it does, among other players. It’s a collective thing.

Do you agree with Zizinho’s comments? Were they out of line? Will Jonathan play with Mexico ever again?

I do strongly believe the comments Zizinho made were out of context. The selections is for players who want to give the best out to their country. Just imagine what a spectacle would it be if every rejected player and his respective dad made this kind of emotional breakthrough. The player who doesnt want to play for Mexico has the doors open. That includes Gio as well, The selection is for men, not for emos, Go ahead and give your best. Character also defines a soccer player. If they are not up to this emotional challenge, just imagine the match against South Africa. They will just pee on themselves.
Failures hone our skills, This is for Jona a lesson to improve his soccer abilities. Many great players have also failed, and there they are.. because that is life for them: Just a Game. Greetings and lets hope for the waters to set calm.

  • Anglomex

    Well said Raul

  • Bryan

I think I would vomit if I saw him in a spain uniform. Hes not a european. GTFO. He will remain with the true team of Mexico..this was just a bad call by the team

  • Al

We’ll have to wait and see what Jonathan says to the press. If he himself says that he isn’t going to play for Mexico, then the struggle to keep him here will get even more difficult. At his age, his father’s words are very influential to whatever he does.

  • ray10nike

wtf is mexico thinking! they take paul aguilar alberto medina nd bofo.! haha im mexican nd i think this is f****n stupid!!!!

  • kn

Im not even Mexican but i gotta say… Jonathan dos santos doesnt deserve to put on the Mexico jersey… let him cry. if he actually did cry then that was already a sign that he should never have been called up in the first place. Credit to el vasco aguirre he made the right choices and i like to think that he chose the players with the toughest mentality. The mentaly strong will triumph in the World Cup and JDS is not one of them, im sorry. I wish Mexico good luck and please for the love of God…. don’t get eliminated in the last 16 like always!!!

  • Luis

Horrible call by Aguirre! Let’s be blunt, if Bofo had shown something in the friendlies then there wouldn’t be such up roar. He stunk it up! was slow, out of shape, looked clumsy etc. This team will win with speed!! Yet instead of playing to its strength, Aguirre decides to avoid a young and speedy player with more up side than Bofo will ever have. And at the same time alienate the best player we have?

In my opinion, sounds like inside interest and favoritism were at play here. Another black eye for the Mexican football federation.

And although harsh, Zizinho’s comments weren’t that out of context. Unfortunately, there is much truth to what he said.

I don’t believe this is a lesson for Jona to learn from. Simply, he was slapped in the face. Mexico is not taking its best 23 players. Period!

    And to address Raul’s quote

“this is for Jona a lesson to improve his soccer abilities. Many great players have also failed…”

This is not Jona’s failure. This is Aguirres failure.

The world continues to rotate. The sun will come up tomorrow. Let’s pray and hope for a miracle. Hopefully the situation quiets down and Gio decides to stay. And somehow is motivated to have the greatest world cup in honor of his brother.

  • chupacabra

Jonathan did not do enough during this campaign to prove himself to be a part of this team. Just because he plays in europe or has Dos Santos on the back of his jersey doesnt guarantee him a spot. Although i do feel bad for Gio. I hope this doesnt effect him at all

  • John

I agree with most of what zizinho had to say, except for speaking for him about playing for mexico again, thats jona’s descision, Hes 20.

Now here is the thing, Andres Guardado played for Mexico in the World Cup in Germany 2006 when he was. Im pretty sure that experienced helped him alot, and personaly i think hes the best player in the Mexico squad.

Going to the world cup would of helped both Gio and Jona. This will defenatly distract gio in South Africa for a time.

Yes Mexico football is corrupt, ugly, and i dont see it going any further, Mexico will always fail if this continues.

Blanco,Bofo, and Castro dont deserve to be in South Africa.
As for Aguilar and Nilo, this will maybe help them as Athletes.

  • John

” when he was 19″- Andres Guardado

  • Cesar

Idiotic. He’s a good player with a bright future and taking bofo ahead of him is plain idiotic. As a lot of people have said bofo played horrible. Yeah he got two gimmies against Gambia but anyone could have knocked those in. Mexico needs mids. So why would you leave out our most promising prospect. It’s not as if he played bad either. He had good control and didn’t give up possesion. I don’t think he’ll play for Spain or brazi tho. And he’s a big boy now not a kid. He’ll make up his mind.

  • edgar

If Jonathan shares this opinion, than i’ll be happy if he never wears the Mexican shirt again. He is not that good to be crying over, and i never saw any potential to be great specially not anywhere xavi’s level.

If Gio can’t get over his 20 year old brother being the 24 man, I wouldn’t mind not seing him play either. Osvaldo should call him and tell him how a professional is supposed to act.

Guardado did go to a wc when he was 19, but if I remember correctly he was already playing for Atlas not Atlas’ third division affiliate.

  • Luis

    @Edgar

The problem is, the Mexican federation has been anything but PROFESSIONAL regarding this situation. Aguirre hasn’t shown his face yet. Why did Nestor have to make the announcement? Why no explanation? Maybe you are satisfied with the decision. But most fans are not, Bofo is nothing special. The question here in lies, why? A young fast player is better than a slow inconsistent one.

Second, one thing I find odd. A little of a conspiracy theory if you will. Jona has always worn Jersey number #13(this was against New Zeland) and #20 (I believe was against Colombia). So why is it that he was given the #24 Jersey against Gambia? was the Mexican federation or Aguirre trying to tell us something? if so, obviously this would be a slap in the face and very UNPROFESSIONAL.

To put it bluntly. I am a fan of futbol. I know and recognize skill. Bofo has displayed none. Two fluke goals. As much as I love Mexico. Seems to me Aguirre choose Bofo because of favoritism and political elements within the Mexican federation. If you ask me, this is what is VERY VERY UNPROFESSIONAL.

  • rigo

Jonathan has much more tallent than Bofo. While i am a fan of Guardado, I dare compare Atlas to Barcelonas 3rd division. In reguards to the the comment comparing Jona to Xavi, Xavi did not beggin being noticed untill he in his mid 20’s.

  • bruno

who should have jonathan directly replaced? anyways javier aguirre said it a while back hes looking for players who can handle the world cup stage. Also its a balance between youth and experience and maybe in aguirres eyes it was changing that balance a bit no matter how good jonathan could be. it all doesnt matter now if jonathan now take it like a man (not a child), tell his dad to shut up he will have a good future.

  • http://twitter.com/ssej_rox Jessica

I agree Bofo didn’t perform very well, it was idiotic for Vasco to do that. Bofo’s reflexes aren’t that good. If Vasco was looking for experience he might as well have called Jared Borgetti. I don’t understand why he wouldn’t want a young, talented player; I mean he does play w/Barca. I have no idea why his father was saying that he can play with Spain or Brazil, because after you play w/an international team that’s it. He can’t play anywhere else since he has played w/Mexico.

Let’s hope his father’s words don’t influence him, but he learns to make his own decisions.

  • Pitudo

Well it shows once again that money will buy you way in? come on guy jona is a great player and as gio im proud of him if he quits the team cuz im a mexican and for our people FAMILY come first not matter what!!!!! VIVA MEXICO

  • edgar

Luis you really think Bofo is a favorite of the FMF? He is disliked by the media, la directiva, and now even the fans the only person I’ve heard defending him is Vergara. If anything the inclusion of Blanco, and even Vela show more favoritism. Jonathan’s cut is a relief since Aguirre upted for what him and Carrillo saw and on pleasing his friend Zizinho.

I question your knowledge of skill Jonathan hasn’t done anything to merit a place unless i’m missing something, Bofo is at least playing for Chivas and he could create that one play to score the winner against SA, Uruguay or France.

rigo i don’t know what you mean with getting noticed. If you mean holding a regular place at Barça and playing for all spain’s youth teams regularly, well he did. If you meant getting noticed by the media, well i can speak for all football watching fans by saying the media underrates a fair amount of players.

  • Bryan

If he gets as upset as his dad and leaves Mexico for Brasil (NO SPAIN!) then im afraid gio could do the same.

  • Luis

    Edgar,

Believe me when I say, I am sure I speak for most here. We ll question your knowledge of the game and skill. If Jona hasn’t shown anything, what has Bofo shown? Two fluke goals that required no more than a tap.

Did you read the report about the players fitness when they all first reported to the team? yeah hes playing for chivas and? Every player was given a stamina test on a tread mill, increasing speeds at different intervals. The average time for the players was over 35 minutes. Bofo lasted… 11 minutes!!! Really! So what’s he doing at chivas if his stamina is this poor. So much for a being a professional. This, along with his poor performances, poor reaction, poor ball control (go look at the last friendlies and how easily he lost the ball), poor shooting is what you want to defend!?

So jona gets maybe 95 minutes in the last two friendlies. Shows Speed, determination, stamina, crisp passing. All things Bofo failed to show.

My friend you need to understand soccer is more than about scoring goals (fluke goals for bofo at that). Stamina, technique, skill, vision, speed… all of which Jona is better at than Bofo. Even at his young age.

  • coconut

So what exactly is the policy on playing for other national teams? Do Jona/Gio still have the option of playing for other nations or they are just not going to have a international career?

Regardless, this is the most idiotic move I have seen in recent times by the FMF/Aguirre. Jonathan has incredible potential, for all of you who said JDS has not shown why he should be taken to South Africa havent noticed that JDS wasnt even given ample time to show what he’s made of. What he played 1 entire game against Gambia on a horrible field and the last few minutes of the Netherlands game? Bofo has been given ALOT more time and failed to do anything productive. sure he scored two goals against Gambia, but those goals could have been scored by anyone else.

JDS has been slapped in the face, and I would totally understand if he doesnt play for Mexico anymore. For all you guys who say “well if he thinks that way, good I dont want him in the Mexican team then!” are ignorant. This was done to him before, and doesnt deserve to be treated this way. Mexico burned a bridge today, perhaps two… Seriously, didn’t they think that this decision will also affect Gio’s morale/performance. God, I am extremely pissed that Mexico would do something like this. Look at Messi, Ronaldo, C. Ronaldo, Guardado, these players were taken at an early age and they showed improvement.

Not only that, but Barcelona B are in a promotion play-offs and JDS left so he could play for the Mexican team, and he was only given 1 game to prove himself. JDS sacrificed alot more to play for the Mexican team, and Mexico just let him down. Horrible idiotic move. I am extremely infuriated right now.

  • http://twitter.com/ssej_rox Jessica

Very well said Coconut!! I am pissed off as well.

I read that once a player plays w/an international team that’s it.He was capped in an official FIFA date(March 3 against New Zealand). Once a player has been capped that’s it

  • http://Canada Daniel

I truly belief Aguirre and his staff made a honest decision. It may be right or wrong but it was honest. Aguirre has the right to pick the player he thinks is best.

I also understand Zizinho. He is a father and is defending his son. He is frustated and has to ease his anger. I respect that. It is human.

But I thinks Jonathan has a future in the Tri. He is Mexican, feels Mexican, and has said he loves Mexico. As far as I know, he has rejected invitation to play for Spain. It would be a tragedy if he started playing for a country which he feels is not his own just for revenge. I think the Mexican fans love Jonathan.

I hope this situation does not affect Gio. He is innocent and may be disappointed. It is normal. He has to be on his brother’s side.

What I do not understand is why part of the Mexican press try to make it even worse.

  • edgar

I will repeat myself it’s not just about the two goals that “anyone could’ve scored,” Bofo also has accurate, precise passing which can define a game and he showed last game. Also I am no Bofo simpathyzer, but he played well and grabbed his last chance at impressing. Jonathan on the other hand was lost for periods of the game, his attempt at goal was disastrous, and his passing not that great.

If this cut had been made when the other two were made than the physical would’ve, or should’ve, had more weight, but it wasn’t so it’s what they did on the field and in training what matter.

If you don’t believe me watch the game again with no bias and you’ll see what i mean. I’ll do the same just tell me in which game did Jonathan showed his crisp passing and i’ll try to spot it.

  • Luis

Look to the future everyone. Aguirre will not be there after this world cup. There will eventually be a new coach. I think once that happens, the Dos Santos family will be closer to changing their mind and having both brothers stay with the Mexican team. They need a little time to calm down. Hopefully Gio is motivated to play well in honor of his brother.

Regardless, I hope we do well. But like many of you, this really pissed me off.

Where is Aguirre to explain all this? he was mysteriously absent from the media after the announcement….

  • Luis

    @Edgar

I think we both disagree with this. In my opinion, with the little time Jona had, he displayed more good moments that Bofo did in the handful of games he had. A few passes, tackles, take aways etc. But I think we should leave it at that. No point in arguing. Just have to stick with the selecion and support them.

I think more than anything, as a Mexico fan, it is frustrating that this can be such a disruption to our team in terms of chemistry. There was talk today that there was a division with the players regarding the announcement. The younger guys like Vela, Hernandez, Juarez, and Guardado did not agree with the decision. While the older vets, like Blanco and Torrado were a bit more supportive.

This can mean nothing, and I hope it doesnt. But it can led to a bad shake up in team chemistry. Im hoping Mexico can persevere and still have a good cup. But that won’t happen without Giovanni playing and giving his %100.

  • Bright Eyes

Wow… It may sound harsh, but if Jona´s abscence affects Gio+s playing, then maybe Gio isn´t at the level that he should be. He is still pretty young as well, but he needs to put this behind him and think about the number one thing, and thats advancing his team through the first round.

This is one harsh reality that needs to be acknowledged when playing on a professional futbol team with siblings.. I know that family is v. important (esp. in Mexico) but you can´t let that affect your performance on the field.

This is your job. This is your passion. Get over it, and it helps, use the anger to bolster your performance come June 11.

  • Bright Eyes

..and as for Bofo´s two ´fluke´ goals… you need to be GOOD to be LUCKY.. if Mexico wins from a little luck, then i´ll be just fine with that, as will you.

  • Al

Just an FYI to those who don’t remember, Jonathan still has the option to change national teams. Yes he did play 5 matches with the senior Mexico team but they were all friendlies, but you need a cap in an official FIFA competition match in order to be tied to the team. However, if he played in what is called an “A-grade” friendly (that is, not one of those silly friendlies in the US with Mexican league players) then he is tied, and he did play that against Gambia. They can submit the request to FIFA and it’s still possible. Recall that spazzo prick Edgar Castillo, played a bunch of friendlies for Mexico, and switched over to the USA. That being said, Giovani cannot change to Brazil or Spain because he played if qualifiers. Jonathan will want to join his brother in the national team in the future so don’t worry about him changing national teams, if he is good enough to have that option anyway.

That being said, this cut shouldn’t have been such a drama but thanks to Zizinho calling out Aguirre for his lack of character, Giovani’s crying, the weird feeling Bofo now has, and the division of the team like Luis mentioned, those factors could hurt the spirit of the team. Yes, they will all eventually move on and concentrate on what’s important, but clearly Giovani will be affected and we need him at 100%, and the team spirit back to how it was. It better happen soon.

  • Benny

It seems like Zizinho is somewhat bitter! come on! if he wasnt your son then you wouldnt care, same way most of us really dont care. Why is Zizinho walking around with this huge sence of entitlement? Does he think that just because his “child” had the opportunity to go to brazil or Spain, he automatically deserves to be in the world cup? I didnt even know about him until like 6 months ago! Its all good if he doesnt play for Mexico anymore! Im sure they will be Ok without him!! Also..whats the deal with Giovany being “crushed”? I mean..dude you need to look out for the team and be supportive, instead of being selfish and crying over your brother going or not to the WC! If Im aguirre now I dont know that I want to play Gio. Will he give it his all for the team or does he have hurt feelings towards the team?

  • http://romeritow.wordpress.com/ Carlos Romero

I’m pretty sure that Bofo does not deserve to be there, he’s a fucking looser. He doesn’t make efforts, he doesn’t have the courage to wear the shirt and to complement he’s sooooooo sloow

JDS will have his choice to decide whether play with Mexico again or not, but he has a long career, he’s just 20 years old and hope he gets better

  • coconut

Where has Bofo’s precise passing been the last couple of games? He might be good with his club, but it doesnt transfer over to the national team.

The reason I’m upset, is because taking JDS would be an investment for the future of the national team, which is why I think the rest of supporters are also upset.

Let me ask you this question, honestly, would you say JDS is the worst player on squad? I really don’t think so and mostly everyone can agree. Bofo doesn’t fit into this squad. He’s slow, at least Cuah has his age and his camel hump to blame on for his lack of pace, but what about Bofo?

What really bothers me is how the staff didnt weigh the consequences of JDS’ dismissal. Seriously, it’s not rocket science. Booting JDS = Gio’s morale being crushed. Honestly, who really couldnt see that coming?? anyone?? Some people choose family over anything, and that would also include country so Gio isn’t at fault for reacting how they say he is acting.

But the damage has been done now, and there’s nothing we can do now. We’ll have to wait and see how this confused team is going to do against Italy… and not to mention in the World Cup. Believe me, if Gio has a dip in form, guess who’s going to get the blame? Not Gio that’s for sure.

  • Vic

Who in their right mind would defend a player who can’t control a ball…can’t run…and can’t shoot…and hasn’t done anything for his club in the last 2 years? Jona wasn’t given the minutes to show what he can do…hope it doesn’t affect his brother much

  • http://www.toetoeshoes.com jordan sneakers

If Jonathan shares this opinion, than i’ll be happy if he never wears the Mexican shirt again. He is not that good to be crying over, and i never saw any potential to be great specially not anywhere xavi’s level.

  • http://cdg.theoffside.com Andrea

It’ll affect Gio, how could it not? But he’s also a professional so his head needs to be with the team.
Oswaldo Sanchez’s father died a few days before Mexico played their first game, yet Sanchez was able to get through that and play the game. I’d say that is much worse, but Sanchez acted like a professional.

And like some people have said, it’s just a game. It’s not like it was Cuah in 2006 who was left off the squad, not knowing if it was his last opportunity. He’s 20 and still has plenty of time ahead of him. Of course this dream is crushing, but he has more times to achieve it. All great players have had to face adversities such as these, and that’s what helps them become great.

  • Miguel

Hello my name is Miguel, I am 24 and I am from Yucatan. ;)

    1) I think Jonathan is a great player.
    2) Yes, as Zizinho said Brazil took Ronaldo and Ronaldinho when they were very young but do you guys remember when Menotti didn’t call Maradona?.
    3) Aguirre didn’t handle well the whole situation.
    4) We have too many defenders or midfielders than can drop back so in my opinion Aguirre should’ve dropped a defender. >>> Marquez, Maza, Salcido, Magallon, Nilo, Aguilar, Moreno, I.Castro, Juarez, Osorio (9) <<<.
    5) It's being said El Conejo will be our goalie for the starting game. What do you guys think?…I think it's very unfair for Michel or Ochoa.

  • Andrew

As for Gio: At the end of the day Gio needs to play for
Gio. This is his golden opportunity to let the world see
how good he is and can be. No drama, he earned his spot.

As for JDS: this will make him more hungry and fuel him
to be and get better. If what those @ Barca saw in him
As as a youngster continue to help him mature as a player,
His skill and talent will eventually speak for itself.

As for team politics: Bofo,Cauh? Really? I am quite
Positive there is much better talent throughout
The Mexican league willing to bust their ass to have
the opportunity to play for El Tri. Both are just 75%’s at best
and I question both to be match fit.

    If this,(current squad) is truly
the best of Mexico’s brightest and most talented,
let’s hope they Perform up to their potential and hope
All the negative media does not distract, divide and
Ultimately hurt their performance on the pitch.

  • Manny Diaz

People forget that Manuel Lapuente did not bring then 19 year old Rafa Marquez with him to the 1998 world cup even though he debuted in 1997 very similar to jonathan dos santos. He made the cup in 2002 and 2006 and he has without a doubt been the Mexican Football Player of the last 20 years, maybe of all time (close with hugo sanchez)

Zizinho needs to quit whining and telling his son what to do. Im sure JDS is going to develop into a maginificent player, all he is doing is making things very very akward for Giovanni Dos Santos and Bofo and the rest of the squad for that matter with their coaches + media. If playing the opening game of the world cup isnt nerve recking enough they have this extra spotlight on them. Leave them alone! Regardless of who should have gone the decision was made and Bofo is going, instead of whining and crying over who went or not they squad should focus its entire attention to Italy and then South Africa, not some angry fist pumping father.

  • gene

You’re 20 years old. Take care of your own business and stop hiding behind daddy. Bitch. If you were good enough to you play for brazil or spain and you still played for Mexico, you are an idiot. Call Guiseppi Rossi for advice.

  • laggs

BOFO be a man and quit, do it for your team and your country. You are the only one that can bring Jona back.

  • http://Canada Daniel

The root of the problem is not Zizinho, Jonathan or Aguirre but part of the negative Mexican presss which saw the opportunity to bring a bad notice and overdo it. It is not strange that David Faitelson interviewed Zizinho because Faitelson is one of the most negative sport journalist in Mexico. That man never says anything positive about Tri. He is tendentious and full of bias. He is a bad journalist. He interviewed Zizinho short time aften the omission of Jonathan because he was looking for bad news to write. A more clever and mature journalist would have waited some days for a dialogue with Zizinho.

The man to blame is David Faitelson. But he is not the only one. Jose Ramon Fernandez and Carlos Albert are plagues of the same sort. They are always looking for the most antagonistic thing to say. As if they are trying to damage Tri. They are not journalist in terms of objectivity because they ar too biased to make neutral analyse. They have no credibility.

I think we readers need to be critically with the source, with what we read. Ask ourselves who is writing and if that person is biased or has credibility because we should not us let be manipulated as we have been by Faitelson in the case of Zizinho. I would argue that Zizinho himself has been manipulated. He was angry when Faitelson made the phone call.

We have to remember that Faitelson said once that FMF had a secret contract with Nery Castillo in which Nery was secured a place in the world cup. A liar ment to cause contradiction.

An example of no credibility, from my point of view, is Vefutbol, which often is as negative as Faitelson, Joserra, and Carlos Albert.

The problem with negative journalists is the antagonistic atmosphere they create. Many fans start saying what they read and it is impossible to have a good debate with them. Just read the comments in Vefutbol and you will see frustation, negativity, antagonism, and no debate at all.

  • Upset Fan

I’m in shock and disappointed with the decision the FMF has made over the cut of Jonathon. I was totally expecting Bofo and Torres Nilo to be dropped from the team but not Jonathon. When Maza Rodriguez was in, he kicked everyone’s ass that came close to the goal with his spectacular slide tackles. You put Nilo in there and you had trouble, coupled with a freaking Perez in goal.
Bofo can’t keep control of the ball and when he does have it he loses it and don’t start comparing him with Blanco. Blanco proved himself to me in the Gold Cup with the way he helped the young guys on the field. Bofo is slow and clumsy and if you think scoring against Gambia is an accomplishment, your mistaken. A country ranked 93rd along with Haiti (Mexico killed in Gold Cup) and Uzbekistan.

This teams psyche is fragile like a tostada (sorry) but you add this turmoil to the mix and you have a team not unified and not ready for the world cup. They should have kept Jonathon on the team and by leaving him out, you’ve screwed up our chances this year.

  • Jess

BOFO SUCKS..WHY THE F*** IS I HE STILL THEIR?
    JONA HAS A SICK SHOOT..
IF HE LEAVES MEXICO IT WOULD B SMART OF HIM CAUSE I LOVE MY COUNTRY BUT THEIR A BUNCH OF FU*** IDIOTS DOWN THEIR..
ESPANA FOR THE DOS SANTOS FAM!!
    +MEXI-ESPANOL!!!+

  • Upset Fan

Another thing, the dad has a right to be mad.
These guys are still young and don’t understand the politics and money behind much of the decisions that are made. Acting as a father/agent he knows what he’s talking about and doing what is in the best interest for his kids/clients. Jonathon may not see it, but he is getting screwed again!!! That’s why these guys have agents in the first place to handle and shield their clients. He’s not acting just as an angry father but as an agent.

  • ike b.

Shoulda known the fix was in…Jonathan never had a fair chance to show what he could do. One game against a weak sister team on a sloppy field? I can’t see Bofo getting quality minutes or being a significant sub against any of Mex 1st round opponents. Bofo is bigger than JDS, but that’s the only advantage he brings. JDS has way more upside. I knew I’d be sorely disappointed with Aguirre the “Savior,” when i saw he didn’t include Zihna (FMF’s best offensive mid)and called up Conejo. Don’t be suprised if Conejo starts! I want to say that Mexico deserves better, but when Mexicans put up with corruption and constant pendejadas…
Then again, as William Munny (character played by C. Eastwood in “Unforgiven”) once said “Deserve’s got nothing to do with!”

  • ike b.

BTW, from tactical sense, cutting JDS made no sense. Mexico had a strong defense without Torres Nilo, who really didn’t show much the few times he was in. Bofo as attacking forward? Mexico has that covered. The help needed would be at mid, where JDS would have been muchmore helpful than Torres Nilo or Bofo.
    We’ll see…

  • boom

    Mexico BLOWS!!!

  • AJ

I disagree with the decision because I’ve seen terrible mistakes from Paul Aguilar and Nilo Torres but somehow these kids have found favor with Aguirre. Politics is everywhere, especially futbol.

  • Andrea

Daniel- Any media outlet would have done that. It’s not exclusive to just Faitelson. If you were a TV station you’d try to get the reaction as if your life depended on it. It’s all about ratings. ESPN(and all other stations) were not going to sit back, let him cool off and then go for reactions. That makes no sense in a business POV. It’s not something just exclusive to sports, it’s in all aspects of the media. For example, if you’ve been following reports of the SB1070 law in Arizona you’ll have seen that initial reports from both sides tried to get all reactions right after the law was passed. Were they going to wait a few days for people to cool down and think about the law? No, they wanted the raw emotions right then. Unfortunately the press is manipulative, but it’s also competition. If ESPN wasn’t going to air the reaction someone else would have. Plus, if you want to blame someone you might add in Zizinho as well. He gave more than one interview right after the cut. He didn’t limit himself to just speaking to Faitelson.

As for Joserra and Albert, I enjoy watching them. And yes, while the overall tone might be somewhat negative it’s not something that’s completely surprising. Can you honestly say that Mexico has the chance to win the World Cup against Spain, Holland, Germany? Can you really say that there needs to be a strong fix in Mexican football because it’s corrupt? Yes, while it’s negative it’s also largely true. Honestly, I’d rather hear the truth than being fed lies.

But you also made a good point concerning readers. They have to judge what their reading for themselves and think about it. It’s the whole FOX vs NBC debate.

  • edgar

Daniel, I agree Joserra and Albert have very strong emotions and they are very biased. I try to only watch their show when Brailovsky is there since he appears to be the only one that knows anything about football, if he is not there I stick to the guys in Tribuna for analysis.

on Faitelson, I’m just sorry Blanco didn’t slapped him harder.

  • http://teamtalk ricardo

firstly im a spurs fan and want to see gio have a good world cup. Gio must be mature and stay focused to ensure they qualify through to the knockout stages. Secondly im interested as to who you guys think will end up as mexico’s top scorer this tournament, hernandez?

  • Luis

    Day 2 and things APPEAR

  • Luis

Day 2 and things APPEAR to have calm down a bit. The team is supporting Gio and are showing it publicly. Let’s try to be positive and hope this has a positive effect on team chemistry and that Gio somehow pushes himself to have a great run.

Two points. First, I think people are being unfair to Gio in this whole situation. He is a human being, like it or not, emotions are part of sport. None of this rubbish crap about him not being a man. Its part of life. Everything being said is coming from his dad. We know Gio is upset but maybe not to the extent his dad makes it seem. Gio is in the squad, the Mexican Federation would not have included him in the final list given to fifa had there been a true menace of him leaving.

Second, it is time to move on from this. Or try to minimize it. But it is clear, there is some bad stuff going on inside the Mexican Federation. This was in fact a political move. Sometimes we put the pressure on the Mexican players to take the next step to ensure we become a menace and world soccer power. But it is clear, that crucial step needs to be taken by the Mexican Federation. Tired of all this political bull, shadyness, favoritism, and corruption.

  • Jin

first of all i respect the fact that GDS is upset but to make a big thing out of it and state that jds will never play for mexico again is childish. its a competition over who deserves to go to the world cup (not saying he should of been cut because i never thought he would of, and i really expected bofo or nilo to get cut) and he shouldnt critizize mexico soccer as a whole just the people running the federation. also, gio shouldnt react that way either he is a professional soccer player and should act wit a little professionalism enstead of being hurt and crying about it, and sturr rumors of leaving the world cup only a week away. yes, i understand that his brother was cut but it was not up to him wether JDS stayed or not even though i feel he should have. the dos santos brothers are both great players and i wish them well but gio and his family including JDS should have been proud of gio and support him on his journey throughout the WC. now theres no telling what will come about for mexico. hopefully great things only!!

  • Abraham

I created a facebook group with the name in spanish saying “Mexico wants Joanthan Dos Santos on the National team”. This is to show our appreciation and support Jonathan.

  • Lucy

Ppl need to stop hatting on Bofo and give him a chance! He is a really good player! I don’t know why the hell ppl hate on their own team members instead of saying good things about them. Everyone is talking about el tri. JDS had his time of playing and didn’t do anything so let’s move on already! lucy

  • Maradona

The Santos aren’t Mexican. Go play for Spain or Brazil. They wouldn’t make the squad. Good, but overrated primadonnas.

  • Diana

How do u guys think GDS feels after his brother got cut off the squad?!?! i won’t blame him if he does a terrible job in the world cup bcause he will b hurt! JDS should nevr play 4 Mexico team again, i love my team and all but i think it’d b the right decision! if Maradona had nevr been picked 4 the world cup, he would have nevr been the star player he was!! who gives a crap if ur 2 young or too old 2 play in the wc? Memo ochoa is young, not the youngest but young and he’s a really good goalie! Now stupid Aguirre is gonna replace him 4 Perez, bcause “he needs 2 build his confindence up”! Oscar already had his wc, let Ochoa have his! that B***** Aguirre just has something against young and talented players, thats y mexico nevr wins the wc, bcause Aguirre relies on Retarded Players like Cuantemohc and all that crap! I hope Mexico has a TERRBLE performance in the wc, bcause Aguirre deserves it 4 being a retard!!
JDS has a bright future ahead of him, he shouldnt let this b an obstacle. he plays 4 the best team in the world, and he should enjoy every minute of it!!
as 4 the mexico team, b superrrrrr glad Aguirre will not b the coach nxt year!!! so JDS should make his own decision(not his dad) and he should choose whethr or not he wants 2 b with the mexico team!!
SO WHAT DO U GUYS THINK ABOUT MY COMMENT?!?!?!

  • will

    gotta agree with DIANA’s comment.

  • Michelle

    @Maradona

The brothers were both born in Mexico and their mother is of Mexican descent. I’d say that they are indeed Mexican.

While I do hope that Jona will try again for a spot in Mexico, I will grudgingly understand if he chooses to play elsewhere.

As for Gio, however, he has already played for the Mexican national team in the U-17 WC and is tied to them for the rest of his national career. Quitting will shut him out from the foreign platform for the rest of his footballing days. I sincerely hope that his strong friendships with both Memo and Vela keep his head held high during Mexico’s WC performance (no matter how short).

I only wish that their father wasn’t so harsh against the Mexican team though. Even though he said he loves Mexico, I find it hard to believe that he does when he has been so quick to spew out such comments.

I like Jona a lot. I wish the best for him.

But right now, my thoughts are mostly focused on Mexico, and Dos Santos Sr.’s comments certainly haven’t quelled my nerves.

  • Nestor10

I strongly agree with Zizinho… Aguirre made a HUGE mistake letting Jona go its unbelievable. Why let go of young talent? In my opinion, im sorry Bofo but you suck. Bofo play extremely horrible. Yes Jonathan is young but has SO much potential. Bofo is by far one of the worst mexican soccer players taken to a world cup. WOW so Bofo scored 2 goals against Gambia…. its only Gambia, Jonathan keep your head up. You are supported and adored by many… Mexico needs you, soon Aguirre will see what a mistake he made…. our thoughts and prayers are with you, keep it up Jona…. BOFO vales verga
