Jonathan will never play for Mexico again: Zizinho
Speculation started when Jonathan Dos Santos was missing as the players headed for training on Monday. Giovani Dos Santos was reported to have jumped on to the field shedding tears by several media outlets. Nestor de la Torre then held a press conference confirming the news, and excused the player from being present as it had been previously reported that the 24th player would appear as well.
Gerardo Dos Santos’(Zizinho) reaction was quickly reported and it just seemed to be an emotional response. However, Jonathan’s father later gave an interview where he once again said the same things.
Zizinho initially spoke to Record after the news broke, saying
“We’re tired of how he’s been treated. It’s not the first time that they’ve done this and it’s enough. Jona will not play with Mexico again. They can never do this to him again. I love Mexico, I adore it, it’s my country even though I’m Brazilian, but they can’t hurt him this way. My problem is with the national team, but they will never do this to him again.
“If there were 23 players better than him, I wouldn’t say anything. There wouldn’t be a problem, but it’s not like that. There are many remaining because of interests it seems. Nothing against the players, but I don’t think that the decision was made correctly. What are they thinking about, what future does Mexico have? I thought Aguirre had character, but it seems I was mistaken and someone else makes the decisions.
“I’m disappointed. We’ve put up with a lot. From Chucho(Ramirez), they’ve always treated him badly and I made a mistake in accepting him to play with Mexico. It was always his dream. It wasn’t to play with Brazil or Spain who have looked for him because he an play with thm. What’s the use of taking a risk, leaving your country to play in Europe, to grow, if later they push you aside? Because he’s the youngest, that shouldn’t be a factor. Other national teams have taken players younger than he, thinking about a longer process.”
Later he spoke more in depth with ESPN about the situation.
“The family is not well. My wife and I are crushed. I don’t think it’s fair what’s happening with Jonathan. There’s been much deceit with the Federation, deceit with the managers. The people don’t know how to value the work of players in Europe, and I think that Mexican football is worse every time.
“The same thing happened with Chucho(Jesus Ramirez). There’s no respect for a kid of 20 years that’s working in the Barcelona reserves. He’s been working so he can play, so I don’t think it’s fair. He’s not on just any team; he’s with Barcelona, the best team in the world. He plays in segunda, he plays with the first team with Pep Guardiola, the best manager in the world. Pep is not just anyone.
“There’s people that shouldn’t be in the Mexican national team. I ask myself, “Where is the Mexican football that doesn’t believe in young players?” I ask myself, “Why not give opportunities to young players? Why don’t they cultivate the players that are rising? Where are those opportunities? We don’t do what Brasil and Argentina do. Ronaldinho and Ronaldo went the their first World Cup on the bench and then look where they made it. It’s happened with many players in the world.”
“Carillo made the decision. Javier doesn’t have the courage. I don’t have anything against “Bofo.” If he’s there it’s because of his work. But I think that things should be correctly done by managers. Where are the managers? Who makes the decisions, Aguirre or Carillo?
“I don’t think Aguirre has the courage. He just has it when he talks on television, but he doesn’t have cojones. He doesn’t have courage. The decision was made by Carillo. The jokes they make about Carillo on television about him making the decisions aren’t a joke any more. Where is his courage? What character does he have as a manager?
“I’m saying Carillo made the decision because Aguirre doesn’t have the character. Why did he go to Barcelona to look for Jonathan? Why does he go to Barcelona and say great things about him? To everyone he said Jonathan was going to the World Cup. Why did he lie to a child? He should have let Jonathan play the playoffs(with Barcelona Athletic) and enjoy him enjoy promotion to Segunda. It’s another failure for Jonathan.
“Mexico’s jersey is useless. Why is Giovani there? Mexican football is dirty. I don’t know what’s inside. Every person makes their own group. They don’t know how to work with people that should be in the group. There’s people on the outside that should be on the inside. There’s too many interests.
“It happened with Chucho. Now, Aguirre. My child will never put on Mexico’s shirt again. For me, it’s garbage. I respect Giovani, who’s with the team. Jona should put on Brazil or Spains shirts, there they will appreciate him. My sentiments toward the Mexican national team flipped completely but not because I’m the father, not because of that, but simply because you can’t do things like that to the future of Mexican football. Why did Nestor give the press conference? Why didn’t Aguirre or Carillo come out? Aren’t they the ones who made the decision?
“Do you think that Gio will last in the World Cup? Both of them called me crying. They were crushed. Why did Aguirre do this? He called him at the last moment. He took him to play against Gambia. He should have played with 23 players or with 27, and he should have cut four…not one because it’s more difficult when he’s still a child.
“Why a young one? It was easier. It’s easier that way. Why didn’t he speak with me first? What character Aguirre and Carillo have. That’s why Mexico fails. The same thing is going to happen with Mexico in the World Cup. Zizinho tells you that Mexico doesn’t exist. I liked the national team. I loved it and today I hate it. Gio is there, but now the national team will be a failure.
“I’m telling you, Jonathan will not wear Mexico’s shirt…He’ll go to Spain or Brazil.
The first words by Zizinho were seen as emotional and at some level it was understandable. Any parent would be upset if their child had been cut from the national squad, just a step away from playing in the World Cup.
And he was right about Jonathan being hurt by the Mexican federation several times. With the U-17 he was told he would not be joining the squad at the last minute and was asked to take of his national team garb. Again, with the U-20 Barcelona was asked to release the player although he wasn’t guaranteed a place with the team and in the end the player did not join the U-20 team.
He brings up many good points. Mexican football is corrupt, and many times it’s controlled or influenced by outside interests. And he’s right, it’s quite unfair that the federation has done this time and time again to the same player.
And it would have been better if Aguirre had announced the decision, but whether it was because he didn’t have the courage to face the media or because he had training to attend to remains unknown.
But despite all the points he makes, there are times where he’s wrong.
Jonathan is 20 years old, hardly a the child that he keeps on talking about. And it seems like he’s speaking for Jonathan by saying that he will never play with Mexico. Isn’t that Jonathan’s choice to make? This isn’t his last chance to make the World Cup, he’s 20. While it might have helped him tremendously, this isn’t his last opportunity.
And he may play in Europe and at Barcelona, but that doesn’t necessarily guarantee a spot on the squad. While there a few players that many don’t believe should be there they earned their spot in Aguirre’s eyes. He’s the national team manager, he’s the one that makes the decisions as much as people may not agree with it.
Unfortunately, he didn’t seem to remember that Giovani is on the team as well. Sure, Gio must be extremely upset that his brother was cut, but how will his father’s comments hurt him? Zizinho’s words were strong and seemed to almost wish the national team to fail.
Even if Jonathan had been selected in the final 23, he wasn’t guaranteed to play. So how can he say that it would have made a difference. A team is made up of 11 players, not just one and all teams can attest to that. Barcelona is a great team but Messi isn’t the only one on that team; Xavi is a great part of why that team performs the way it does, among other players. It’s a collective thing.
Do you agree with Zizinho’s comments? Were they out of line? Will Jonathan play with Mexico ever again?
