Jonathan dos Santos Gets The Cut

jonathan

So it’s official: Jonathan will not be in South Africa nor will he get the “Guardado treatment” by hanging with the big boys as a chance to experience the World Cup as a young player. If we had remembered FIFA’s rule of having squad numbers going up all the way to 23, we would have gotten the hint considering that Jonathan played with the number 24. So no, Bofo nor Torres Nilo will be getting the cut, and now our squad is finalized. Jonathan has a bright future ahead of him, and he had more chances to play with the senior Tri than many other 19 and 20 year olds. He is going to be star one day and he is learning from Xavi, the world’s best playmaker. I guess Aguirre didn’t feel like Jona was ready to make a difference to the team yet. Maybe Bofo can give him the tickets to South Africa that he won at his bank.

Just as a reference, here is the 23 man squad:

Goalkeepers: Oscar Perez (Chiapas), Guillermo Ochoa (America), Luis Ernesto Michel (Guadalajara)

Defenders: Rafael Marquez (Barcelona), Ricardo Osorio (Stuttgart), Francisco Rodriguez, Carlos Salcido (both PSV Eindhoven), Hector Moreno (AZ Alkmaar), Paul Aguilar (Pachuca), Efrain Juarez (Pumas UNAM), Jonny Magallon (Guadalajara), Jorge Torres Nilo (Atlas)

Midfielders: Andres Guardado (Deportivo La Coruna), Gerardo Torrado (Cruz Azul), Israel Castro (Pumas UNAM), Giovani dos Santos (Galatasaray)

Forwards: Pablo Barrera (Pumas UNAM), Adolfo Bautista, Alberto Medina (both Guadalajara), Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Veracruz), Carlos Vela (Arsenal), Javier Hernandez (Manchester United), Guillermo Franco (West Ham).

Ugh, but taking him to the world cup WILL make him into a better player. god dammit.lajdflakjdslfjaldasflkds

  • Ricardo

    I just don’t understand why…..

  • Anglomex

I have been reading around the different message boards and think everyone just needs to relax. Was it a huge mistake taking Bofo over him, absolutely but what’s done is done. Let’s just support El Tri and hope for the best.

For Jonathan his time will come, yes Gio is upset his brother is not joining him but he will get over it and it absouloutly will 100% not affect his performances in South Africa. These guys are professionals.

I have been reading too much negativity (luckily not on this site :) ) about our team but now it is time to stop this and get behind our country.

    Vamos Mexico!!!!!!!!

  • Richard

I just can’t believe it. This entire time I was 100% convinced that Jonathan was going to stay and Bofo was going to be sent home. Even though he didn’t make a huge impacted I barcelona, but he did play with the best in the world. That’s better then Bofo will ever do in his career..

  • ATLASrojoynegro

This is all bad, all bad!!! Start Bofo agasint South Africa!! And make him do something!! UHHARGHHGHGHAA!!! I’m Mad.

  • Rod

Mexico should have taken J. Dos Santos as a midfielder. Why is Mexico bringing 9 defenders, 8 forwards, and only 3 midfielders? Above it states that G. Dos Santos is a midfielder, but he is actually a forward (and he better play as a forward if Mexico wants to go anywhere in the World Cup).

  • edgar

  • Luis

This is turning into a nightmare. A simple cut. Yet with so many implications and repercussions. Jona’s father was reported as saying:

“I am upset with the national team,” Zizinho said. “They won’t do this to him any more because this is not the first time they’ve done this to him… Jonathan will not play for Mexico any more. I love Mexico, I adore it, it is my country even though I am Brazilian but they cannot hurt him this way.”

Even worst, it is reported that Giovanni called his father in tears pleading with him not to go to South Africa to watch him play as he is depressed and has lost drive to play.

All of this because of one man, no not Messi, not Ronaldo or Rooney. But El Bofo. Are you kidding me!?

We can jump on the Dos Santos family and say they are overreacting. Which they might be. But can you blame them? Jona is a teenager. Gio is just 21. They are close and having Jona there would have been great for Gio. Now Jona is shattered and Gio is depressed and hurt. Unfortunately, I always believed Gio would be the key to us going far. And this is not good to hear for the Mexican national team.

Sorry guys but this really really bothers me. I don’t know why Aguirre made this decision. I love Mexico and will always support it. Yet, this is a bad move. A man training for Barcelona and the understudy of one of the greatest midfielders in the world, Xavi, didn’t make the team. Yet, a guy who showed up in the worst physical shape of any of the Mexican players in the squad and will more than likely contribute nothing to the team, did. Hurting our changes in this world cup. Alienating two of our top 5 prospects. Hope Mexico can persevere. All of this because of a simple cut =/.

  • Al

I honestly believe that it was a bad idea to spend so long with a squad of 24. The third player should have been cut at the same time that Aldrete and Valenzuela were. Imagine the pressure of knowing that there will be just one player being cut. It’s not the same as if you had a pool of 30 because the group that didn’t make it would not take the news as hard: the disappointment is shared between 7 if you know what I mean. Plus, Jonathan is only 20 so he was a kid realizing his dream and being a part of a unit of 24, getting that far, then Aguirre crashing his dream only 10 days before the World Cup. I just feel really bad for Jonathan, and I think that the dos Santos family wouldn’t have taken it as hard if he had gotten the cut earlier.

Also, Jonathan hasn’t gotten capped yet, so his father is right about him being able to change national teams. But don’t worry, Brazil and Spain remain stacked as hell so it’s not like they’re going to cap Jonathan in the next few years. When Gio feels better and the new coach begins giving Jonathan a chance, he’ll be back. But the statements to the press by their dad are very harsh.

  • Richard

Exactly Al, it’s impossible for Jonathan to play for Spain or Brazil right? Either way, I dont think they’ll even call him for those two country’s. They have to much talent. I’m not saying jona isn’t good or has any talent, but if they were wanting to call him there would’ve been interviews and rumors about those country’s wanting him..
One more question, Is there any way to take out a player and place him for someone? Or what I Bofo doesn’t want to go and can he give that spot to jona?

  • Bryan

This scares me…cut youth? keep old? idk

  • http://cdg.theoffside.com Andrea

He was capped in an official FIFA date(March 3 against New Zealand). I’m fuzzy on my FIFA rules, by I thought you couldn’t switch once you had officially been capped by the senior team on a FIFA date. Or is it just when you’re capped in an official FIFA competition?

  • Don Cheto

Bofo should of gone home, not Jona!

  • Ernie

edgar, u think just because bofo scored two goals against Gambia he deserves to be in the team!? come on! gambia showed no resistance!

  • edgar

Not just because he scored, he gave some very nice passes including 2-3 to Vela who screwed them over. I saw the game twice and Bofo was certaintly one of the best mexican players especially after Medina came in. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve never been a Bofo simpathizer however he was nowhere the worst in the team. There were at least 6 players worse than him Jonathan, a kid who plays in the spanish third division who should be happy about being this close to playing in the wc (ask dinho or Cassano if they wouldn’t have wanted a similar chance,) being one.

That been said I’m glad Aguirre finaly made the right decission and did not listen to the media. Too bad it was after sacrifying Aldrete, and not giving Nery at least a chance to prove he is fit.

  • D corte

    maxico…..bye…

  • Ricky

Edgar, what the hell are you talking about?!!
My grandmother could’ve scored those two goals. How you can say that was the right decision is beyond me. This issue could’ve been fixed if conejo wasn’t there. I would alternate ochoa and michel but why on earth would you play conejo? Do you even need him on the squad? This disgusts me. Even if you take certain players just for bench, i would rather have jonathan in my bench then bofo 30 lifetimes over. The worst part is that bofo knows it too, he would pick jonathan over himself any day! Any newfound confidence that I had in our team has diminished to the same unsure feeling that i always had since the first world cup i can remember. Not because we lost key starting players, but because i know this shit affected the teams spirit, the one thing that i felt could take us all the way. As always, i will support my team to the end. Here’s to hoping a miracle will lift the team’s spirits, and we can see that hunger vs italy come thursday. That game will show us how far we will go.

  • NATIONALMX

Honestly, this is a load of crap. I think everyone needs to give it a break and focus on the team other than that one simple cut. Johnathan Dos Santos will become a great player. Its just that during his opportunity he either didn’t show the necessary or wasn’t under Aguirre’s standards for the world cup. The world cup isn’t for training purposes its to show what we got and over come every selection of the world. An someday Johnathan will get there. He’s young and will prosper. As for the publicity thing with his family. I think they took it to hard. An saying that they wont play just cause he didn’t make it is going to far too. If me and my brother was going through the same thing, my father would be mad but wouldnt threaten la seleccion de mexico. An to make a hard cut like that had to be done till the last minute. Did you all want mexico to play the world cup without knowing who or not we should take or what? It had to be done to the last minute. Sorry. An bofo wasnt the only one messing up during our tour so best of luck to our seleccion and stop with the hating instead of backing up our seleccion.

  • edgar

Ricky what the fuck are you talking about Vela and Guardado had easy shots and they managed to miss them, even one of Vela’s attempts came from Bofo’s foot. And when did i defend conejo?

if you’d rather have Jonathan in your team instead of Bofo well i guess that’s cool. Carrillo, Aguirre, and me don’t share your oppinion.

  • NATIONALMX

I agree with edgar on that.

  • http://Canada Daniel

Andrea, Jonathan was capped by Tri but still can play for another country because he is under 21.

  • rammy

    To anglomex’s post:

You are wrong my friend….Though Gio and Jona are prefessionals they are still only human and do have emotions and feelings. This is a major stab in the back to Jona and Gio is NOT too happy about it. This can and will affect Gio’s performance in the WC. It is going to take some counseling by Aguirre himself to make things right. it not only effects Gio, but also the rest of the squad (besides Bofo, Castro, or Nilo who shouldve been the ones cut, proabably thinking they just dodged a bullet). The other players know that Jona was done wrong thus losing respect and faith in the coaching staff. Colossal mistake by Aguirre and the FMF.

  • el chupis

estan pendejos y malos del culo. no compares a guardado o vela con el pinche bofo. seran los unicos pendejos que prefieren al bofo en vez de al jona.

  • pinche aguirre

chinga tu puta madre aguirre. your a fuckin idiot for cutting jonathan.

  • nino

Jona keep you head up !!!! Your time will come just wait….

  • http://www.google.com rompompolio

Serio, this will mess up jio’s performence in the World Cup, i say Torrado should’ve been cut he sucks balls and WTF! is conejo doin in la selecion! he shouldve been replaced by Jonathan Orozco from Monterrey! the 2nd goal england scored was cus Conejo was too short to tipp the ball over cus he’s too short he’s 5/7 jajaja

  • Marcos

WHY?!?!?!?!?! I would’ve prefered Jonathan over Cuauhtemoc Blanco or Bofo. Blanco keeps losing the ball too easily and I’m guessing Bofo got lucky by being at the right place when scoring in the last game. But Jonathan would’ve been a better choice to be in the squad. Blanco will be the laughing stock of the team as he aleady has been with the british commentators during their coverage of the games. Too old, too slow, no good.

  • Klopez16

ARE YOU F***ING SERIOUS? you can still justify keeping blanco because he is an important midfielder but EL BOFO? WHY IN THE WORLD would they keep him over JDS? He is in horrible shape he cant play worth a damn and his two goals were given to him he didn’t do nothing to justify his goals. Yes JDS is young but he needs that experience for the next world cups he will play in. Honestly i have no problems with Jona’s dad’s comments because aguirre is a dumbass playing favorites by keeping bofo. The best thing Gio could do is give Bofo his starting spot and show aguirre how horrible Bofo is. Aguirre has already emotionally hurt one of Mexico’s top youth prospects and his extremely talented brother with this decision. No doubt this will only hurt Gio’s performance in the World Cup all we can do is hope Mexico can rally together and play like they can.

  • Gsxr873

BOFO is trash, he may be good in the Mexican League but J. Dos Santos has European experience which makes him a better player.I cannot believe this.

  • Keen

Jona needs to stop crying like a little B@#$H and support the national team he so desperately wanted to be a part of. The attitude of the that entire family is very immature, what the F#$K….threatening to not play ever again for the Tri….Gio needs to put on his big boy shorts and play the game like the professional that he is, and his dad needs to be behind him 110%….If El Tri loses their games and does not make it out of the group play it will be their own fault for not playing like a team and not because they were beat by better teams…..

  • ike b.

Aguirre is famous for playing his favorites. Need I remind when he foolishly, incessantly put in Matador Hernandez over Paco Palencia a couple of WCs ago, when Hernandez was all but washed up, and Palencia was one of Mexico’s top fwds? This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. Watch, Conejo will start too!

  • ELDUQUEH

this for some dude that said that jonathan was a kid that played in the 3rd division yeah that third division problably has more talent than Mexico’s first division but still who knows what goe on in aguirres mind it can be a master plan of his own little receipe for disaster well good luck Mexico and keep your head high Jona after Xavi teaches you everything he knows u’ll make Brazil or Spain roster an Mexico will be offering u BJs to get on their squad!

  • Ms.DosSantos

Soo Im A Major Mexico Fan And I LOVE My Gio! ! ! Soo This Makes Me Mad! ! ! Jona Has More Potential Then Others On The Team And If You Watched The Game Bofo Was Even Better Then Blanco! ! ! Plus Aguirre Should Of Got Rid Of Nilo Idk Why He Needs So Many Damn Defenders! ! ! I Really Hope This Dosnt Screw Up The Teams (Gios) Rhythem In The World Cup. . . Damn Aguirre! ! !

  • Donpisto

Todos son una bola de pendejos. You all feel like coaches but we aint shit. In my opinion there where a couple of players that shouldn’t of been in the team, not just Bofo or Torrez Nilo. Getting rid of Jona is not that big of a deal, there where other players from Mexico that could of gone and where not called. We are men, not fucken little kids. In my opinion nobody is beyond the selecion de mexico, and if gio and jona thought that they are, then get them the fuck out, I don’t care how good they may be or think they are. I hate vasco, I hate the staff and all those that make the decisions, and one day I hope we get a real coach and that the FMF get real directors, but when any player puts on that shirt, jumps on that field, regardless of who they are they are playing for something greater than themselves. This aint the gio or jona show. Don’t fucken threaten that your gonna leave, just leave, and if you think that spain or brazil will ever give you a chance then by all means, leave. Fuck!

  • mrskullneck

very well put Donpisto……..thats exactly how this should be taken…..the coaches make the decisions, not us…….just watch the games and be happy…..who cares……it’s not like any of us are playing for the cup.

  • alex

javier aguirre is stupid an letting jonathan go he is young he is the future of mexico and other players i like cuauhtemoc blanco but in this case i would of like that blanco would of left instead of jonathan or bofo should of left. aguirre sucks
