Do You Root For Both Mexico and the USA?

The other day at work, my co-worker who knows very little about soccer was badgering me with questions so that he would be well informed right in time for the World Cup. No biggie. I answered his questions, explained the sport a bit, and all of a sudden we had this conversation:
Him: “How much of a chance does the USA have to beat England?”
Me: “Well… USA blah blah blah, England blah blah blah…”
Him: “Oh, I see. Wouldn’t it be amazing if we beat them?”
Hold it! Pause. We? Well, I guess he was referring to “we” as Americans, and I definitely am one. What he didn’t know is that not all of us support the US national team, many of us actually disliking the team quite a bit (including myself). So without shame, I said…
Me: “I root for Mexico so I don’t even care. I actually hope they lose”.
Him: “Hah you would.”
I felt like an jerk and actually felt un-American for that moment. Actually hope that the USA loses? Well, I didn’t want to lie to my friend. I don’t feel right rooting for Mexico’s eternal rival, even when they aren’t playing Mexico. I don’t even feel the same obligation that many Mexican-Americans have to root for both the team of their nationality and the team of their blood. “I root for Mexico when they play the USA, then root for the USA in any other game that they play. They are both my countries and I hope that they both do well”. Have fun with that.
So wait, during a Mexico vs. USA derby you pick one side and by default the opponent becomes the enemy, then afterward you root for that same enemy? So that means that many of us root for Landon Donovan’s balding mug when we spent the last derby flipping him off when he provided Charlie Davies with that assist for the goal? Doesn’t sit right with me. It also doesn’t sit right to root for the USA in the Confederations Cup when they had to beat my beloved Mexico to get there.
You must understand how bitter of rivals Mexico and the USA are in the sport to know that rooting for both them, even when they don’t play each other, doesn’t make sense. Both teams are hated rivals. You wouldn’t be a fan of both Barcelona and Real Madrid, so why is it okay in this situation? The matches are derbies: fights break out both on the field and on the pitch, smack is talked in the press, and when one team loses, it is devastation just because of who they lost to instead of having lost 3 points. There is historical significance in the rivalry, such as the USA knocking Mexico out in the 2002 World Cup and Mexico raping the USA 0-5 last July then 2-1 again a month later. Our supporters usually don’t get along either. We have some bad Mexico fans, but many of the USA fans that I have encountered are racist and very uninformed about the sport (watching so much MLS does that to you). And I’ll state again, Mexico does have bad fans as well. Every team does. But I don’t fit in with the USA fans at all, and I’m fine with that.
Simply put, Mexico is the team that I grew up supporting and that is why I root only for them. I would watch the games with my family and for years I would listen to my uncles argue about our coaches and what players “no sirven para nada”. I was raised on Luis Hernandez and Cuauhtemoc Blanco, wearing counterfeit green jerseys that my dad would get me at shops. Just like people say all the time in club football, “you don’t pick the team, the team picks you”. Mexico picked me, and the US wanted to pick me too but I said no.
I spent many, many years with this confusion of whether I was obliged to root for my American compatriots. I felt bad when I told my American fans that I didn’t root for the USA, but the moment that I stopped feeling bad was on August 12th of last year. When Mexico was winning against the USA, video footage of American soldiers was shown and they were all Mexican soldiers waving Mexican flags in celebration of the lead. That did it for me. These men, who are as American as one can be by fighting overseas for our protection and liberty, still hold el Tricolor in their heart over the USA! If they can do it without shame, I can too.
So even though it makes little sense to root for both teams, obviously it is your choice as to what you want to do. There is no “right” choice of teams to root for. Be a USA and Mexico fan if you want. Or a Brazil and Argentina fan. Or a Barcelona and a Real Madrid fan. Your allegiance to a country isn’t being tested with a sport, and if somehow you can hate Donovan and friends one second then root for them the next, kudos to you. Feel obliged to root for the USA anyway? Then do it. Do whatever you want and some blogger named Al shouldn’t convince you otherwise.
I’ll continue to support Mexico and only Mexico without feeling like a traitor, and if you relate to me, don’t feel bad either.
