Breaking Down the Enemy
Bob Bradley finally revealed his list of the 20 men that will travel down to face Mexico on August 12th.
Three are back from the Gold Cup, and the rest aren’t much of a surprise. Those who were expected to make it, made it. Missing is Edgar Castillo(the player who switched National teams).
Goalkeepers
Brad Guzan(Aston Villa)
Tim Howard(Everton)
Defenders
Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes)
Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA)
Steve Cherundolo(Hannover 96)
Jay DeMerit(Watford)
Chad Marshall(Columbus Crew)
Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan)
Jonathan Spector (West Ham)
Midfield
Michael Bradley (Borussia Mönchengladbach)
Ricardo Clark (Houston Dynamo)
Clint Dempsey (Fulham FC)
Benny Feilhaber (AGF Aarhus)
Stuart Holden (Houston Dynamo)
José Francisco Torres (Pachuca)
Forwards
Jozy Altidore (Hull City)
Conor Casey (Colorado Rapids)
Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo)
Charlie Davies (FC Sochaux)
Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy)
The called up goalkeepers are no surprise. Timmy Howard will be the one to start, and is one of the players that should worry the Mexican side. Sure, he’s not the one attacking the goal, but he is tough to get past(especially with some of the finishing on the Mexican side). After his performance at the Confed Cup, his call up was already set in stone.
The expected defenders are on the list. Most of them play in Europe which has it’s advantages and disadvantages. The season is starting/just started for most of these players. The “Gooch” for example was in America for his preseason with AC Milan, and didn’t have a good time to be honest. The form held by this man, and possibly all the others can help the Mexican team because they won’t be in their top form. Somehow, many of these pull out a good performance, but that doesn’t seem to be the case this time around.
The midfield looks quite good for the US side. Holden made it as one of the participants in the Gold Cup, but he played well for most of it. Despite that, he probably won’t see playing time. Torres is also on there, but his time has been limited with Pachuca so far. Of course, one of the standouts is Bradley who scored twice against Mexico in Columbus.
Up top, Brian Ching found his way on to the roster. He wasn’t too impressive against Mexico in the Gold Cup final, and doesn’t seem to be doing too well. He’ll most likely watch the game from the stands. Jozy Altidore is an impressive player, who despite having limited playing time, seems to come up with the goods. And Mexico’s #1 enemy, Landycakes, is there. No matter what form Donovan is in, he always delivers against Mexico.
Again, there aren’t any surprises on the team. The players who were expected to make it, made it.
Predicted Line Up

Good break down. That lineup is pretty much the consensus at this point among many U.S. fans. The only thing is Donovan will be on the left and Dempsey will be on the right.
Jermaine Jones of Schalke 04 looks like he’s have to wait until September or October to get his first American cap, because of an injury. Edgar Castillo’s paperwork isn’t fully complete and probably the reason he didn’t get selected. If Bob Bradley doesn’t try to out think himself then the U.S. should do well.

Ok so unrelated to USA squad, I just watched Chivas vs. Barca a while ago. Tie game and all yeah, just a friendly. What impressed me was my first viewing of Jonathan Dos Santos.
The more I watched the more I think of how great he would be for Mexico. I don’t know bout anybody else but I have always been worried about our creativity in the middle. I mean Blanco and Pardo are too old and Torrado is more defensive. We lost Torres, Bofo is inconsistent and Sinha is also getting a bit old and seems to get no love.
But Jonathan looks real good, his passing is quick and efficient and he has some Dos Santos flair. The Dos Santos duo threat, I’d like to see that. I hope he gets picked up by Aguirre.

Aguirre should pick up Jonathan as soon as possible because the boy has both Spanish and Mexican nationality and it is said that Spain is trying to convince him to play for them. I am surprised that he has never played for Mexican juniors. It is a great mistake by the Mexican leadership.

The game between Mexico and US will be very interesting. US has improved a lot in recent years and are keen to win at the Azteca. In spite of Mexico’s high score against US last in Concacaf, it would not be a surprise if US won. It may happen sooner or later. Mexico needs a win because it is in a weak fourth place in the worldcup qualification and that puts an extra preassure to the team. I think the rivalry between those two countries is the most exciting in Concacaf.

Pseudinho- Thanks for the update on those players.
asdf- I’d like to see him with Mexico, but I think it’d be too much at this age. But like Gio said he can only talk to his brother and try to convince him, but in the end it’s Jonathan’s choice who he wants to play for. Although it seems like he’s leaning towards Mexico.
Daniel- He’s half Brazilian, but they don’t really need anymore players. He has played with the mini tri’s, but there were some problems while he was there. I think that Mexico will win and the rivalry by far is the most exciting in the CONCACAF.

great is us team but greater the Azteca is. no matter how good usa has improved the ultimate Mexican fortress is almost unbeatable. the hot weather, height, air pollution, the pressure of the fans, all of this combined makes a tough scenario for the us. I don’t expect another 5,0 like the last name but I think that if Mexico can do the same thing as the last game making a fierce resistance on midfield and wearing out usa stamina we can take advantage on the second half when they get tired and score a couple goals on counter what usa loves to do everytime when they play us
