The last time…

June 23rd, 2006 | By: John | 35 Comments »

The last time Argentina and Mexico played in the world cup, it was the first world cup. That’s astounding, considering that these two nations have more than 20+ world cups between them. Argentina defeated Mexico 6-3 in Uruguay 1930. But their history does not end there.

Mexico’s first invitation to the Copa America in 1993 culminated with a trip to the Final. They met Argentina in Quito, but were defeated 2-1 after a Batistuta goal in the 2nd half.

More recently, Mexico defeated Argentina in the 2004 Copa America, 1-0, with a fantastic goal from Ramon Morales. And in the 2005 Confed Cup, Mexico and Argentina went to extra time scoreless, Carlos Salcido put Mexico ahead, but they could not hold the lead. Argentina equalized and went on to win in the PKs.

Obviously, the stakes are a little higher in Leipzig on Saturday.

I’m not 100% confident either, I just feel really good about it. Internatinal press knows nothing about Mexico and the rivalry between the two countries, be it international or professional. I don’t believe Mexico is afraid of anyone…seriously. Most important thing is that no player have any kind of lapse in concentration because it can cost us a goal at either end…these guys don’t give you free passes. I also hope that Lavolpe doesn’t go too defensive in his tactics. If we go down I want to go down swinging.

All my wonderful Mexicanos, break out the Casadores and the Dos Equis and celebrate our beloved team! Si se puede.

Mexico must learn to take their scoring chances when they get them, fast. Otherwise argentina will murder them.

I haven’t deleted any messages at all. There is spamnet that check daily, but I always de-spam comments. I rarely get comments parked for approval, and when I do I always approve them.
There are other administrators, though, and I can;t speak for them.

its foolish to look at only your team and ignor your opponents

argentina has a strong defence

massive midfield and one of the strongest attacks

this isn’t the B-team from the confed cup

this time there is crespo messi mascherano and every player on the argie team is in GREAT form now

i dont doubt mexico but i do believe this could be too much for them to handle

i see a narrow win by argentina

Have all of you Mexican fans been watching the same world cup as I have. Mexico tied ANGOLA! You beat Iran with a second half ralley. If you would have taken Serbias spot in our group you would have been wins three loses. I think that you have one player that would crack the starting line up for Argentina. You have less talent and a lot less team chemistry. What this all means is , Yea you could win as it is the World Cup. Good luck! Dont feel to bad if you lose.

Team Chemistry is what the Mexican team is all about, it’s just that lately it hasn’t been flowing, god, I want to see Guardado and Ramoncito! As for this world cup, I didn’t get my hopes up, I have my hopes up in 4-8 years when Dos Santos plays, when Carlos Vela plays, when Villasomething plays! Thats MY MEXICAN TEAM! :p

This will be a great game.

Even though their group results were not so great, I think Mexico has potential.
The main thing is to THINK you can beat the opposing team (which I think they do because they played the Argentines many times).

In any case I’m sure it’ll be way more interesting to watch than Germany-Sweden game.
Good luck to Mexico!

Okay, here goes, ladies and gentleman, this is the moment of truth.

Mexico has nothing to be ashamed of, nor do we have anything to be afraid of.

All it takes is one goal, or to score one more goal than them. Facil. Why the heck not.

The entire world believes we will lose. The Mexican press, the international press, the bandwagon fans that know nothing about Argentina, the Argentinian fans, experts, etc…

And you know what, none of it matters. None of it. None of it.
The only thing that matters is our “paisanos” leaving every single ounce of blood they have on the field tomorrow. If they believe it, they are the only ones that matter. They are the only ones that play.

I already have a smile on my face. Can’t wait. Win or lose.
Give’m hell boys.

Big baller,

There is only one way Mexico can win, and it is based on a basic condition that hasnt been there.

One opportunity = One goal. instead of

10 opportunities = ZERO goals.

That is the real issue. I have no doubt the defense can take the argentinian atack, possibly concede 1-2 goals. As long as the finishers dont finish, which is the real problem with mexico, then i think mexico is dead meat.

I honestly hope that bravo borgetti (if he starts) kikin, et al, finish the opportunities.

As I said above, my heart with mexico, my money with argentina for the arguments explained in this post.

I am an Argentina fan and I desperately hope they win tomorrow.

But if you guys beat us, I shall offer you my congratulations and ask you to beat Germany and go all the way to the final.

Let the world see the beautiful south american style fo soccer and not the aerial european crap.

Above all, I wish for a great game of soccer tomorrow and hopefully both teams will exhibit the glory of south american soccer to the world.

May the best team win!…. but vamos Argentina!!

good luck mexico! i am argentinian and i live in utah…i have to say mexico is a tough oponent and i am nervous…because of the many mexicans her ein utah mexico is the third team i hate to loose to(i didnt show my face at betos for about 2 years after the south american cup lol) ofcourse first is brazil then england….but i have to say u guys are a lot more humble than the argentinian blog and thats a lot funner ….though to comment to louie message..argentina did have a b squad and ur wrong we didnt have mascherano..we didnt have el pato…we didnt have heinze(i think) we didnt have maxi rodriguez(right?) who has been liek the best player so far i think …we didnt have crespo…we didn have nico(he could still start…..and we didnt have the bench we have now..so yes if u grade the players we had then and the players we have now….b squad….but dont be discouraged by that b squad is liek a notch below a squad so mexico def has bragin rights on us lately i think…good luck guys and hopefully arg wins and i think it will be 2 0 but i dont think it will be easy at all..also if mexico plays at 100 percent , then u guys can ether win 1 to 0 or beat us in penalty kicks(although i thinka ll mexicans think ur cursed by penaltys and argentina are pretty experts at it…

Mexicans after all was said and done you are bragging about a game in the Confederations cup that you lost. if the best you can do is brag about a game that you lost to Argentina you are really in trouble! You guys have a chance to win but that is it. Lets be realistic in saying that you do not have near the talent that Argetntina has. Dont give me all of this crap like you dont know this in your hearts and I am not critisizing you for cheering for your team but man Argentina is that good. Good luck.

Just to clarify on the Argentinian side that played in the Confederations Cup, this was the lineup:

12. LUX German
3. SORIN Juan
4. ZANETTI Javier
5. CAMBIASSO Esteban
6. HEINZE Gabriel
8. RIQUELME Juan
9. SAVIOLA Javier
14. MILITO Gabriel
16. COLOCCINI Fabricio
18. SANTANA Mario
21. FIGUEROA Luciano

Maxi Rodriguez, Pablo Aimar and Luciano Galetti also played.

Not exactly a B squad, since 7 people from that squad are going to play today but having Ayala and Crespo is certainly an upgrade, and not having Zanetti, might be a downgrade (but not a big one since this team has been playing great without him).

FOr the record, on that match our team made was doing so good against Saviola, that he ended up receiving a red card because he went bananas. Coloccini should have been sent off too. I still believe that guy is a wrestler posing as a football player, or maybe he just forgot that FIFA’s football is not the same as the NFL’s.

I am argentinean and do want my country to win though I do know it is going to be a tough game. Mexico is not a great tema but it is bloody Viva Mexico Cabron and I do know cos I leave in Mex. for two years that you would love to beat us as much as we would love to beat Brazil though we are a very strong team just have a look to it and go through each player in or out of field.
Vamos Argentina.
