Mexicans in Europe 3/22-23/08
Several Mexican players play in Europe and we’ll try and keep you updated on their progress. Win or lose we’ll be there.
Spain
Rafael Marquez(Barcelona)-He was still unavailable for this weekends crucial clash against Valladolid. Barcelona won 4-1 and are now only 4 points behind Real Madrid after finally being able to capitalize on the league leaders’ misfortune. Marquez is said to be “nearly ready to join the team.”
Giovanni Dos Santos(Barcelona)-Still injured and didn’t feature in Barca’s squad but trained with the team on Saturday.
Guillermo Franco(Villarreal)-After coming on during the 78th minute “Guille” then scored the winning goal 7 mins from full time. Villarreal are now within 2 points of Barca and 6 points of Atletico Madrid and continue on their run for a Champions League place.
Carlos Vela(Osasuna)-Vela is still injured and was not included in the squad after failing a late fitness test. Osasuna lost 0-1 to Real Betis and are in 14th place with only 2 points separating them from 18th place. He is not likely to feature in Mexico’s friendly against Ghana in London midweek.
Andres Guardado(Deportivo La Coruna)- Deportivo lost 0-1 to Mallorca and Guardado came on during the 56th min. He hasn’t been back from injury too long so hopefully he can regain his form to help pull Depor from the 15th spot and to place more clear of relegation. Look out for him against Ghana.
Germany
Aaron Galindo(Eintracht Frankfurt) Galindo featured in Eintract’s 2-1 win over Cottbus. He played all 90 mins and is becoming a regular first team starter and is playing well so its no surprise that he was called up for the friendly midweek. He hasn’t played since 2005 for Mexico for failing a doping test during a Confederations Cup pre-tournament training camp. Eintracht sit at number 7th in the Bundesliga table.
Pavel Pardo(Stuttgart) Tor! Pardo scored his team’s first goal(penalty)during the 4-1 win over Hansa Rostock. The team played well with an air of arrogance as they looked frustrated being held by a “lesser” team. Stuttgart are number 6 on the table with 41 points.
Ricardo Osorio(Stuttgart)- Osorio started the game but came off during the 83rd minute.
England
Nery Castillo(Man City)-Nery was dropped to bench for the Bolton game that ended 0-0. He came on during the 57th min and had an effort on goal but his shot was cleared off the line during the 81st min. City are 9th in the table with 49 points.
Holland
Carlos Salcido(PSV)- PSV won 3-0 against Groningen and have pulled 7 points in front of second place Ajax.
Hector Moreno(AZ Alkmaar)- AZ ended the game at 0-0 against De Graafschap. Moreno played all 90 mins but he has not been called up for Mexico’s midweek game against Ghana.
Turkey
Antonio de Nigris(Ankaraspor)- Ankaraspor defeated Genclerbirligi in the Turkish league. De Nigris scored twice in the 33rd and 47th mins to give his team a 3-1 victory. De Nigris has been called up for the friendly against Ghana.
Managers
Javier Aguirre(Spain/Atletico Madrid) Atletico won 2-1 over Sevilla to stay in the number 4 place in the La Liga table. They now have 50 points, 6 behind third place Villarreal.

I am very excited for Carlos Vela’s arrival at Arsenal. He’ll be included in the first team right away(of course he still has to earn his starting place)which is encouraging to hear. Against Chelsea today I kept on thinking forward and how maybe next year he’ll be providing crucial goals for the Gunners. His standout game for me this season has definitely been the one against Real. He gave Sergio Ramos alot of trouble and was a constant thorn in Real’s side.
As for Depor…I really hope they don’t go down. There is that constant threat right now. Guardado is pure class and I’m pretty sure that he’ll be taken by one of the bigger European sides within 2 years. Same with Giovanni Dos Santos and his younger brother Jonathan who is supposedly better than Gio.

I agree with Gio needing to leave Barca. Many big teams(Chelsea,Inter) want him so I think he’ll be fine. I think he should be sent out on loan so he can get more experience. It would also make him see that he is replaceable and it’ll stop all the hype from going to his head which in the end I think will make him a better player. Anything for the good of his name right? And Bojan has been doing OK. Today he was phenomenal but its not a usual performance. As for Jonathan…yes he’s young but, he’s been playing quite well with the Mexican U-20’s.
