Mexico Falls to Canada, Literally
The Mexican woman’s national team was eliminated from the Olympics yesterday, after losing 1-0 to Canada. The only goal came in the 24th minute after a defensive mistake by Marlene Sandoval. Mistake is putting it nicely, she fell down while walking backwards, leaving an open path to goal for Melissa Tancredi who capitalized on the mistake. Yes, you read correctly, she fell while walking.
After the goal Mexico became disorganized and desperate in searching for the equalizer, although they had a couple of clear opportunities they were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. The Canadians were content with playing the counter attack which almost helped them extend their lead, but were denied by the post on two occasions in the second half.
This loss means that there will be no Mexican team fighting for an Olympic football medal. Both the men’s and women’s team will have to be content with watching from home, or perhaps trying to kick-start the Mexican badminton teams.
