Down But Not Out
The women’s national team lost to their US counterparts in the last game of the group stages of Olympic qualifying by a score of 3-1. Both Mexico and the United States advance to the semifinals that will decide who will go to the Olympics.
In the semifinal games Mexico will play Canada, while the Americans will play Costa Rica. This means that there might be a chance for a rematch between the Mexican and American teams. History does not favor Mexico, who has never beat the United States.
The tournament is taking place in Mexico, which means that Mexico favors from a home crowd. The game against the United States set a viewing record for a woman’s football, and I’m guessing a large influx of those new viewers are following the women’s side after the men’s poor performance in their Olympic qualifier.
The game against Canada looks to be interesting because it was the men’s Canadian team that advanced out of the group stage instead of Mexico. This means that the women have an interesting opportunity to avenge their male counterparts.
