The Ignored Ones
A woman in sports is usually thought of as a spectator (unless she’s playing tennis or golf). In the men dominated sport of football the womens teams are hardly talked about. With a country’s hopes at their feet, it’s now the El Tri’s women who are expected to qualify for Beijing.
Womens CONCACAF Olympic qualifying starts in early April(2nd-13th) in Ciudad Juarez,Mexico. The team is led by Leonardo Cuellar and by Barcelona player Maribel Dominguez. Although they are ranked at 22nd in the world the task ahead of them is still difficult as they have been drawn with teams such as the US(currently #2) and Jamaica.
Mexico has not provided much support previously to the womens team and they often lack suitable fields and funding. In the past months many of the major mens teams have however fielded teams in the Womens League which will hopefully elevate the sport.
And let’s hope that the womens team has more huevos than the mens team to get to Beijing and make the country proud.
