The Hexagonal Schedule

November 22nd, 2008 | By: Al | 2 Comments »

Straight out of Johannesburg, the fourth round schedule has officially been confirmed.

Lady luck took a vacation and gave us quite possibly the toughest opening match possible, away to the United States. The “February classic” lives on, and now points are up for stake alongside pride.

The schedule:

February 11: United States vs. Mexico
March 28: Mexico vs. Costa Rica
April 1: Honduras vs. Mexico
June 6: El Salvador vs. Mexico
June 10: Mexico vs. Trinidad and Tobago
August 12: Mexico vs. United States
September 5: Costa Rica vs. Mexico
September 9: Mexico vs. Honduras
October 10: Mexico vs. El Salvador
October 14: Trinidad and Tobago vs. Mexico

The most tempting matches obviously being the rematches against Honduras and at home to the United States (I’m so there).

As seen against Honduras last week, Mexico has a long way to go in terms of being a true contender. Not even hiring Sven as the coach could get rid of the fears that the Mexican fans developed during and after the Hugo era.

We have Sven Goran f’ing Eriksson as a coach. We have a solid European base of players and one of the world’s best defenders, we have everything that sets us apart from all the other CONCACAF teams. Why we can’t live up to the expectations is something that nobody can properly answer.

February can’t come sooner, and I’m hoping that the jigsaw puzzle of Mexico’s winning spirit is solved very soon.

Well, the match in the United States was always one Mexico could afford to lose.. but they always had a chance if they were in form.

Largely, my take on the Hex is that the first three matches are critical for each team, as all the bigger teams are drawn then… toward the end of the cycle, the matches aren’t as interesting. So when the Hex winds down to the last few games, we’re gonna have some teams in the running who will end up regretting a “slow start.”
