Hej Sven

Coach SvenIt’s official, Sven-Göran is the new coach of the Mexican national team. He signed a two-year 7.5 million dollar contract that will see him as a coach until the end of the 2010 World Cup, I’m guessing after the world cup it will be decided whether Mr. Eriksson will stay.

Erikson brought company, he’s bringing two other coaches with him: Tord (I wonder how this is pronounced) Grip and Hans Backe.

More than coaches, Eriksson is bringing news, and lots of it.

People are already lining up on either side of the coach. So to make it somewhat simpler, here is the full battle royal rumble lineup.

Pro: Pumas coach Ferreti, player Leandro Augusto.

Con: Everyone else. Seriously, Borgetti, Osorio, Naelson, Pineda, Johnny Magallón, and two guys who I overheard saying choice words about Sven over the paper.

So why all the hate? Some people say that the players don’t want an “outsider” perhaps after being spoiled with Hugo Sanchez, and all the losses. The FMF has already announced that besides Sven and his entourage, the rest of the coaching staff will be Mexican.

But it has to be more than that, perhaps the Mexican players were following Sven’s games with Man City. Whatever the case, the players are going to have to get used to Sven… or mutiny which would be really cool.

Sven will be relocated to Mexico City, but will first go back to Manchester to close up shop.

During Sven’s vacation, Chucho Ramirez will still hold the reigns of Mexico’s national team for the next three games.

This is an absolutely wonderful decision, and congratulations to Mexico! Sven-Goran Eriksson is a great manager, he has accomplished quite a lot in Europe, and best of luck to him in the Americas!

It’s as though the Mexican national team existed solely to demonstrate that there is a less competent authority than the USSF…

I still don’t understand why Lavolpe isn’t still there. He had Mexico playing some of the most attractive football in the world. Eriksson is a reasonable coach, but I can’t see him being a good fit for Mexico, but I suppose we’ll soon see..

I think this is a weird signing. I don’t know how will Sven do with our national team. He wasn’t successful at all when he was England’s coach but he’s been a successful coach when working for other teams.
Speaking or not the language is not a major problem in my opinion. There’s Guus Hiddink as an example when he coached South Korea.
I believe he’ll give a different mentality to mexican players and other countries will be looking at Mexico even more than they did before.

I don’t know if signing Sven was the smartest idea but I wish we improve and do a good job under his command.

I would have to disagree with Miguel Rosado above. The English are over critical about their coaches (understandable because of the passion – much like Mexico), but clearly made a mistake letting him go.

Here’s some notable features while coaching for England. 1) Germany 1-5 England World Cup qualifier 2001. 2) England 1-0 Argentina 2002 World Cup. 3) Improved England’s FIFA World ranking from 17th place (Jan 2001) to 5th place (July 2006). 4) Achieved the highest point percentage in Major Tournament Matches of all time for an England manager. 5) Lost only 5 competitive games and achieved top qualifying place in all three International tournaments during his five and a half years as England manager.

So what does all this mean? Well just look at Euro 2008… England current manager Steve McClaren didn’t even qualify them for Euro. Also, England disappeared from the top 10 FIFA ranking since Sven left.

Sven Goran Eriksson is something Mexico needs. This move will boost the quality of play and competitiveness around the world for Mexico. Like a game of Chess, the pieces are all there but you need an experience professional to play them correctly. I believe Sven can do this.
