Gold Cup Champions 2009

July 26th, 2009 | By: Andrea | 12 Comments »

With 5 goals, Mexico won against the USA in the Gold Cup final to become the 2009 Champions. Five was the reoccurring number as this is also Mexico’s 5th Gold Cup.

The US looked dangerous in the first half, but in the end it ended 0-0.

Coming back for the second half things changed.

In the 56th minute a penalty was given to Mexico after Giovani Dos Santos went down in the box. Heaps and Dos Santos had a tousle in the box, and the referee Campbell gave Mexico a penalty. Captain Torrado stepped up to the spot and scored to make 1-0 to Mexico.

It didn’t take too long before Mexico brought on the goal fest.

Vela made a run into the area in the 62nd minute and gave it to Sabah, who’s shot was saved by Perkins. Dos Santos took the rebound to give Mexico a 2-0 advantage.

Two goals wasn’t enough and a third goal was added in the 67th minute by Carlos Vela. Dos Santos found Vela who calmly chipped it over Perkins. The ball rolled slowly into the goals, unable to be stopped by any of the US defenders to make it 3-0.

It wasn’t enough, and in the 79th another goal was added. Carlos Vela slipped in a perfect pass to “Gringo” Castro who added the fourth past Perkins. 4-0

The final dagger in the US’ heart was in the 90th minute with a goal by Guille Franco. Fausto Pinto fed the ball to Franco outside the area, and the naturalized Argentine took a powerful shot to make it 5-0 in the night.

And with that Mexico won 5-0 against the US to become the 2009 Gold Cup Champions.

Giovani Dos Santos also won the award for Player of the Tournament.

And Miguel Sabah went home with Top Goalscorer.

Up next…the showdown on August 12th at the Azteca.

Congrats to Mexico they showed poise in the second half. Officiating was pretty poor IMO. That first penalty was as bogus as they come if there was a foul is was on the mexican player. There were also some bad offside calls that went the US’s way so bad officiating all around and it wouldn’t have changed the outcome or likely the score.

It was pretty amazing how the back line for the US fell apart after the first goal. Didn’t look good for the US up and comers.

Did Bradley make any subs in the second half. I didn’t notice.

Good win for Mexico. The Vela sub made all the difference. Bob Bradley completely managed this match all wrong. The fact that he didn’t call in anyone that had left camp to be with their clubs like Steve Cherundolo, Freddy Adu, Charlie Davies or didn’t use any of the players on the provisional 7 guys like Benny Feilhaber, Jozy Altidore, or Brad Guzan was completely wrong. I was saying he should have called those guys in for the semis and final, many of my fellow Americans agreed with me, but there was a small segment that said give these “C” squad players more experience as if 4 games wasn’t enough they needed 6 games I guess. Of those guys I listed none actually would have gotten 2 games in with their clubs in this time frame of meaningful games and most would have gotten in maybe one preseason friendly with about 30 minutes playing time max for most, but if they were with the U.S. they would have gotten in shape for their club season by getting good playing time with the U.S. team. Makes you wonder if those cries earlier this summer for Bob Bradley’s head were right. Hats off the El Basco he truly showed what a coach is supposed to do. He took winning seriously and he took the tournament seriously and with the respect it deserves. I think they have found something with the partnership of Gio and Vela up top. Anyways, this is my Mexico starting lineup for August 12th…..what’s yours? As I understand it Rafa is still out. If I’m wrong on this obviously he’s be one of my starters. I would have Gio playing off Vela a little put as a playmaker/second striker. Then I would have either Nery Castillo or Fernando Arce on the right. Couldn’t decide who. Nery’s still and bit of selfishness may actually be good for Mexico in this match especially against a weaker left back slot for U.S.A. Pardo and Torrardo in the middle holding the midfield together. Then I start Maza Rodriguez because of his size. Mexico will need his size going up against either Ching or Altidore or both.

—————Ochoa—————-
-Osorio—Magallon—Maza—Salcido-
———-Pardo—Torrardo———-
Nery or Arce—————Guardado-
———Gio————————
——————Vela————–

Good win. The game was completley fair and most importantly both teams did not disrespect each other. Watching the game on FSC was a complete farce. Bias telecasters or should I say sore loser telecasters made the US fanbase and team look pretty foolish and weak.
The win was just but we will see on Aug 12 who’s really better. The”C” team excuse is not convincing. Mexico wasn’t exactly starting the best 11 either. Did we take the tournament more serious; yes. One more thing, something I haven’t seen from my beloved Tri color in while; Maturity and humility. They won this game with class.
As far as lines up go
Ochoa
Magallon_Marquez_Galindo_Salcido
Pardo_Torrado
Cuau_______________Guardado
Gio______Vela

I believe the 4-2-2-2 lineup is the best and these players have the heart, experience and maturity to do it. Nery is selfish, Osorio is out of form. He’s been injured for over a year with Stuugart and Maza never plays with PSV. This line up is a recipe for complete domination on aug. 12.
No offense or anything but our 5′9 and below players took care of the 6 footers in Kenny Cooper and Ching.

Will Rafa be back for this match? I thought he was hurt. There is a huge difference playing players with skill like Altidore than Cooper who only got in after the match was already decided. Blanco is gonna have a fun time chasing around Donovan if that’s the lineup they go with. For USA sake I hope Mexico does start Blanco because that’s one less player with any legs we have to worry about. Although his skill around our goal is great anywhere else on the pitch he’s pretty long in the tooth…..don’t ya think. Everyone knows USA knows Mexico knows the world knows that USA send “C” squad players and although Mexico didn’t sent their complete first team out. They sent more of an A/B squad out. The teams are pretty even when the best are playing the best. But in any sport a 3rd string team is gonna struggle to beat a team full of half first string guys and half second string guys. Kudos to Mexico for beating my nats. Hopefully, the continue to show that class when they are up against it, because it’s easy to show class in victory it’s a true judge of one’s character when you are up against defeat and you show class.

BTW, 5 of the players you have in your lineup Aaron played yesterday. The only one that played yesterday that may play for USA August 12th is Ching and that’s a maybe.

At Pseudinho- Rafa should be back. He’s been declared fit to play in a week or so. Fifa.com wrote a report about him a few days ago. Look it up.
Techincally, Gio nor Vela are first teamers. The only first teamer was torrado. Ochoa and Magallon aren’t really first teamers either. They should be but they aren’t.
Rumor has it that Oscar Perez will be playing In goal Aug 12. I certainly hope its only a rumor.
Im not going to lie, Aguirre hasn’t done shit with the team. Im glad they won yesterday but I hope he furthers this success in future endeavors like wins in the Azteca and also out of it.
I don’t think the US took this tournament serious at all. I mean yeah they rested practically there whole A squad from the Confeds cup but they didn’t play the Domestic Players well in the final. The good ones all came in when the game was over. Poor game management. I hope it left a sour taste In bob bradleys mouth and also in the mouths of the A B C D and the rest of the alphabet squads of the US. One way or another, the game will be a great 1 in the Azteca.

Aaron, thanks I missed the update on Rafa. I’m kind of ashamed because I’m a Barca fan and didn’t hear that. I haven’t been checking everything online as frequent as I have usually. I don’t know why Aguirre wouldn’t start Ochoa. To me he’s a great shot stopper and yeah his positioning isn’t the greatest but he’s the best overall Mexico has got. Bob Bradley doesn’t understand the concept of when you got a team down keep them there. We did it with Mexico yesterday we had them down and didn’t keep them down. We did it in the Confederations Cup final. We went into a shell after the second goal. You can’t bunker down that early in a match. It left our guys gassed at the end. To me bunkering down is only acceptable within the last half hour of a match. But you should keep possession as much as possible at that point above everything else. The U.S. had Mexico down and no confidence facing the U.S. team and now that’s gone and yeah since maybe 1 of our 2 guys will have a chance to play on our World Cup team may not mean much to us, but to Mexico they had about half a World Cup squad there and it meant something to them to get over that mental hurdle.

I’m so looking forward to the World Cup qualifier. It should be a great match. Will USA take over the region for good by beating Mexico in Azteca or will Mexico start hitting it’s stride because a win would go along way to help Mexico qualify for the World Cup.

To clarify some things. To me “A” squad is starters if you were to play a World Cup match. “B” squad is players who would be on that bench. The full 23 man roster. And “C” squad is players who wouldn’t make your World Cup roster. As far as A,B,C squad I was just going off your lineup for the August 12th match as to who was “A” squad.

What makes me happy isn’t the fact that we won the Gold Cup, but more of the fact that we scored 5 goals in 45 minutes against our eternal rival. 5 goals. That’s straight up bending over and taking it hard.

FYI in the United States the game will be available in Spanish on Telemundo and in English on mun2. Also if you use your SAP button it will be available in both languages on Telemundo. As well mun2 will be having a free preview for that day because of the match for DirecTV and Dish Network subscribers that don’t already get mun2. So if you want you can listen in Spanish or if you like English. BTW, the English announcers will be Phil Schoen and Marcelo Balboa.
