El Salvador vs. Mexico: Okay, We’ll Get It Right This Time

June 5th, 2009 | By: Al | 18 Comments »

Alright, club season is over. Congrats Pumas, congrats Barca, yadda yadda.

It’s been two months that have felt way too long. The scars from the Honduras match are still there, but nobody really notices because they’re too caught up wondering what the hell kind of lineup and group of players Aguirre will play on Saturday. This new Mexico already looks exciting with the return of a once successful national team manager.

Enough talk about how “we must hope for better things for Mexico” and all that jazz. So, whatever. We lost to Honduras, have fallen a place in the FIFA rankings, now what? Shut up and move on. Success will come.

Whaa, fallen a place in the FIFA rankings?

That’s right, Mexico has fallen a place in the FIFA rankings, and is now in 26th place. How did this happen, considering they haven’t even played a game since April 1st?

We also have two European champions on the team. Shouldn’t that stand for something?

Answer: No. (Yeah Nery, you carry that UEFA Cup that you didn’t play for).

Anyways…. it will be Vasco’s second debut with the national team, and without the shot at a friendly match beforehand. Sven didn’t get one either against Honduras, and Mexico still won.

However, the state of the team is a bit different. Mexico is a team that is always demanded success and dominance in the CONCACAF, but after the embarrassing loss to Honduras the team was left broken and in need of some redemption. Enter Javier Aguirre, a man who had recently flopped with Atletico Madrid but that knows futbol Mexicano like the back of his hand and has been manager here before. Some call him a “hard ass”, and others “too nice”. I fall in the “too nice” group because of what I saw at Atleti, but this isn’t club football so what do I know. The players have been raving over his appointment so at least the confidence within the team is still there. Believing in El Vasco is only the first step.

Thankfully, for his re-debut match this is El Salvador that we’re playing. Not dogging on them at all, as they’re a great team that gave a hell of a game to the United States and T&T, but better off playing 5th place than the likes of the United States. Still, no reason to hold back. Them scoring two against us is almost a guarantee. They may be composed of local league players, and haven’t won their only two home matches in the hexagonal, but underestimating opponents is clearly one of Mexico’s faults.

The pressure is on. The Salvadoran fans are already doing their part in taunting the heck out of our squad, and at this point Mexico needs to shut them up.

Roster

Lineup

It’s been a little too long since 2002 to assume that Aguirre will use the same formations, in which he would apply a 3-4-3. Thankfully, Aguirre supplied us with a “teaser” lineup, which could or could not be the actual lineup tomorrow.

Perez
Osorio, Galindo, Maza Rodriguez, Rojas
Pardo, Torrado, Arce
Guille Franco, Sabah, Nery

Despite Aguirre talking in the press and making it sound like they will counter and defend, the lineup looks a bit offensive. Yep, Conejo Perez, in all his 36 year old glory, will probably be the starting keeper tomorrow, even though he himself admitted it’s not certain. The 4-3-3 looks like it could work again, although Guille Franco will have to make do with a right wing position as he is traditionally a center forward. Guardado is on a bit of an injury scare so who knows if he’ll play. Carlos Vela has one match left on his suspension, so no “super sub” appearance by him (he’s not even that good yet anyways). I also don’t know why Osorio is expected to play, as he has been inactive for about two months since his surgery so hopefully it has little effect on his work on the right wing of the defense.

Then again, this lineup could be completely, completely different tomorrow. Good ol’ Aguirre teasing us.

The obvious: we are much better than El Salvador so the only option tomorrow should be a victory. A draw will do, but if Mexico wants guaranteed qualification (making the first three spots), matches like these should be won. If we win the next two games, we’ll have 9 points and be within the first three spots, based on the performances of Costa Rica, the USA, and Honduras.

In the words of the great David Faitelson, “Mexico’s greatest rival on Saturday is Mexico itself”.

UPDATE: An even more official lineup has been confirmed

Perez
Osorio, Galindo, Maza, Rojas
Arce, Pardo, Torrado, Guardado
Nery, Guille

Guardado in, that’s more like it.

Aguirre must know what he does, but ‘Conejo’ Perez seems a bad decision. He is the fourth best keeper in Mexico and should not be in the team. Jose Jesus Corona, Oswaldo Sanchez, and Memo Ochoa are better. Aguirre’s choice seems a blunder and even if Mexico wins, ‘Conejo’ has to deliver to show that he is better than the others. Either Aguirre attributes him qualities no other do in Mexico, or he is guided by personal favoritism, which is not good for the team.

The election of Cuauhtemoc Blanco seems to be doubtful too. He has technique, but is old and too slow and has not the condition to play a complete game. In addition, he tends to be upset if things do not go his way. I would not be surprised if he gets a red card and let the team with 10 men. He has done it several times before.

I was enthusiastic with Aguirre, but he has dissapointed me. However, I hope he has a good plan and proves me be wrong.

Vamos! hermanos mexicanos. Mexico necesita tu apoyo… no te quedes callado.

I can’t believe the results! This team by far has had more disappointing losses than I can remember. How embarrassing at the fact that so much talent Mexico produces and have yet to win a world championship and even worst that now cannot even be a leader in its home turf. I will no longer support El Tri and now will have to burn my Jersey, as they never seem to disappoint with their failure.

Sincerely,
Ex Tri Supporter

Wow. Is there even a word for “internet troll” in spanish? I’m gonna have to delete some comments…

When Brazil or Argentina goes to the world cup everyone support them.

Why can we do the same if Mexico or any country from Cental America.

After we’re Hispanic.
