After several years with the Mexico World Cup Blog, Al and I have decided to move on to a new venture. As you may have noticed, the frequency of our posts has severely decreased with the exception of our Mexicans Abroad section and guests posts from Bryan.

We’ve enjoyed our time and appreciate that every reader that has visited the site.

A World Cup, a couple of Gold Cup championships, drug scandals, prostitution scandals, several managers, angry parents, and several other moments have helped define our time here.

We want to to thank the World Cup Blog and the Offside network for giving us a spot to blog about the team.

But for some time we’ve had the idea of moving on to our own place since we feel this spot is not longer the best place to carry out what we wish to do.

Please join us at our new venture, Tri Report. Bryan will also be joining us as this new site as will Rich. We will try to bring you continuous coverage of the Mexican national team, the players abroad, and other great features. We couldn’t have done it without you guys, and we hope that you’ll continue to follow El Tri with us.

-Andrea

I’m going to be lazy and just agree with everything that Andrea said. But I also want to thank every reader that has stopped by all these years and hope that many of you visit us at our new location. I’ve been reading this page since 2006 in the WC Bob/John days and when I had the chance to contribute, I worked my hardest to provide the best content possible while juggling my undergrad in college.

Writing for this blog during the 2010 World Cup was an unforgettable experience, because Andrea and I gave our all to provide great material and a place for any Mexico fan to mingle and discuss anything Tricolor-related (which was a huge plus for those who aren’t too proficient in Spanish but loved Mexican soccer). As a result, we landed around 350-400k visitors in June 2010 alone which may not be a big deal to some of you but it was to us, considering we only received around 5k per month before that. Hearing all of your stories and opinions was/is wonderful and I read nearly every comment, not because I’m a creep ready to debate anyone who disagrees with me, but because everybody has a say and I wanted to read first-hand what fellow fans think.

I had lots of fun writing each and every post but unfortunately I think that if we remain here on World Cup Blog, we’ll be limiting ourselves to what we are capable of achieving as an English speaking Tricolor resource. The Offside/WorldCupBlog is practically a ghost town and the new owners, SB Nation, do very little with it and won’t even reply to an email if you send them one. So it’s time to venture on our own and start this neat little website that we hope can grow into something big by the time the next World Cup starts.

If you are interested, there might be a possibility for whoever wants to take over this very website but once again it depends on how quickly SB Nation gets back at us. I’ll provide contact info when I find it but otherwise, drop a comment here if you’re interested and I’ll get in touch.

Another guest post by blogger Bryan W from TheFutbolBlog. Thanks, Bryan!

In February we all heard, or saw the disaster that was the Mexico U-23 against the USA U-23. The USA managed to score two goals in less than five minutes. Mexico never rebounded in that game, and the Yanks walked away with a boosted confidence heading into Olympic qualifying. Just a few weeks after the game, Erick “Cubo” Torres was added to the roster. What lies ahead for Torres are three-factors he needs to prove/address.

1) U-20 World cup was just a phase

Erick had been catching the eye of Mexican fans for some time heading into the U-20 World cup in Colombia. Mexico made a lot of noise in the tournament taking third place. Yet, Torres was not himself in any fashion in the tournament. In fact, against Brazil, he did not even look prepared to play. What Torres has now, is the ability to show that he is indeed back. He has been playing at a high level ever since with Chivas, and now is the perfect time for him to translate that with the Olympic squad.

2) More than a club player

Mexico has had its share of players who did very well in Mexico, only to fall short with the National side. As mentioned, “Cubo” has been having a great run with his club in Guadalajara for the past few seasons. What fans want to see is if he can be the force for Mexico that he is for Chivas. He has unique skills, which could be of great use for the Olympic side. As a young player, Torres is playing with some of the best in the Mexican league. He needs to show that what he is learning with the veterans is indeed applicable with other younger players.

3) A missing spark

When we look back at the highlights against the USA U-23, Mexico seemed to have a serious missing force at striker. I really think Jeronimo Amione can be a great player, but he may need a little more time before he is completely ready for that role. This is where “Cubo” comes in to the picture. His skill in the penalty area is comparable to a younger version of Chicharito. This is a presence Mexico really needed against the U.S. side. Fabian was forcing too many things at once, and the lack in striker was a major reason of this. Torres can come in to the Olympic side, and possibly address this issue immediately. If he plays with the passion, and confidence he does in the Mexican league…then there is no doubt he can do so this upcoming Olympic qualifying.

If you are a fan of Mexico, then you and I both felt like we were being tortured watching Wednesday’s game. The complete lack of rhythm was a 180 from what we have been used thanks to a great 2011. Yet as my emotions settled down, I started to dissect the game a little more accurately, and now find myself looking at what should be taken away from Wednesday.

1) Sometimes the ball does not roll your way

Literally, the ball was not rolling Mexico’s way against Colombia. It seemed like every time a major opportunity presented itself, the fortune for Colombia was greater. The best example was a cross from Barrera in which Zavala tried to slide and tap in. Unfortunately the ball just barely hitting the cross bar was the difference from 1-0 lead, and remaining 0-0. Then we saw Falcao doing absolutely nothing, receiving a deflection for the go-ahead lead. The little things like this are something every team will experience, and even though I wanted Mexico to gain positive energy for this upcoming year. I may have to conclude that it is better to have this happen in the first game (with Euro based players) of the year to humble our squad just a bit.

2) Trying to clean up the roster

At half it was only a single goal deficit for Mexico. Yet just 15 minutes into the second, Colombia made it 0-2. As this happened it seemed Chepo made every substitution, he had. What proceeded was an even worse display of passing, and offensive attack. I feel this will shed some light on which players Chepo should be calling in the near future. Of course we may have had a bit of a different outcome had Vela not declined for his “personal reasons.” To add, I do understand Chepo has had some questionable roster moves in the past…but we never lost as bad as we did on Wednesday since he has been in charge. Yet fortunately, we have some time to brush up on a solid roster before we start an important summer, and we can only hope we will see changes needed. I believe every fan of ‘El tri’ will be a bit worried if we see some of the names called come August against our greatest foe. It is wake-up time, and I think Chepo will be ready.

As mentioned sometimes the things we think will happen…do not. I was a bit nauseous watching Wednesdays match, but we will have to applaud Colombia on their efforts. They were definitely more prepared than Mexico. Excuses should not be our center of attention, but more of a reflection to acquire an understanding that many teams can cause problems like this for Mexico. If we are not ready, an outcome like the one in Miami will be inevitable. For now, us Mexico fans will wait until the next friendly is scheduled. We may have to be sour for a little while longer, but I feel Mexico will be able to pick up where 2011 left us.
