Missed opportunity

June 16th, 2006 | By: John | 18 Comments »

Well, so much for the nerve free game vs. Portugal. Missed opprtunities and erratic passing have left Mexico in a less than confortable position as they played Angola to everyone’s favorite: the scoreless draw. The Angolans executed their gameplan to perfection, and can now play Iran for a possible spot in the [...]

Gameday 2

June 16th, 2006 | By: John | 36 Comments »

Mexico takes on Angola today, and with a victory and a Portugal non defeat, the conjunto azteca will stamp their passports for the 2nd round.
Mexico has not lost a 2nd game in the world cup since 1978, and since 1986, they have two wins (Ireland-94, Ecuador-02) and 2 draws (Paraguay-86, Belgium-98).
The expected line up today:

Building toward Angola

For only the 2nd time in their long and tepid world cup history, the Mexican National team will play a squad from the Dark Continent when Mexico takes on Angola this Friday in Hannover. The first match-up for a Mexican side vs. an African one did not go very well for Mexico, as Tunisia became the first African nation to wina world cup game when they defeated Mexico 3-1 in Argentina 78.

Guille nets 6 in last tune up

June 8th, 2006 | By: John | 6 Comments »

Guillermo Franco scored a double hat trick as Mexico pounded the local club team in Göttingen 10-0 in their final tune up before boarding the train tomorrow for Nuremberg. The game was played behind closed doors, shrouded in a veil of secrecy. Of course, we know this means absolutely nothing, but at least Guille has improved his accuracy.

Will Vergara step up if needed?

June 8th, 2006 | By: John | 9 Comments »

I have been reading reports that flights from Mexico to Germany are sold out, so it may be extremely difficult to get Oswlado back to Germany. The only option might be to charter a private plane. My question is, do you think Jorge Vergara will take the lead to secure this method of transportation if needed? I say yes.

The best celebrations

June 7th, 2006 | By: John | 1 Comment »

Since I started watching the world cup, the game has changed significantly. And so have the celebrations, but not always for the better. When I think of good celebrations, I don’t think of undressing or posing, just pure unadulterated joy. So here are my most memorable.

Borgetti wants to have fun

June 5th, 2006 | By: John | 8 Comments »

Jared Borgetti knows this is his last world cup. He knows he will get ample playing time. If there is any pressure, he doesn’t feel it. He just wants to have fun.
Borgetti did not have fun playing at Bolton this year. Lack of playing time, miserable weather, no decent [...]

Mexico will wear green shirts and socks with white shorts vs. Iran, who will be wearing all red. Mexico will then don their white shirts, green shorts and white socks for the other 2 group D Matches against Angola and Portugal.

Don’t Panic

June 2nd, 2006 | By: John | 9 Comments »

So the 2 friendlies in Europe didn’t yield positive results. The concerns are starting to grow. There were only 3 shots on goal in 2 games. The defense that we all thought was airtight made some silly mistakes. The possession game in which Mexico excels evaporated for the most part. The offense has been MIA.
