The Mexican woman’s national team was eliminated from the Olympics yesterday, after losing 1-0 to Canada. The only goal came in the 24th minute after a defensive mistake by Marlene Sandoval. Mistake is putting it nicely, she fell down while walking backwards, leaving an open path to goal for Melissa Tancredi who capitalized on the mistake. Yes, you read correctly, she fell while walking.

After the goal Mexico became disorganized and desperate in searching for the equalizer, although they had a couple of clear opportunities they were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. The Canadians were content with playing the counter attack which almost helped them extend their lead, but were denied by the post on two occasions in the second half.

This loss means that there will be no Mexican team fighting for an Olympic football medal. Both the men’s and women’s team will have to be content with watching from home, or perhaps trying to kick-start the Mexican badminton teams.

Both Mexico and the United States advance to the semifinals that will decide who will go to the Olympics.

In the semifinal games Mexico will play Canada, while the Americans will play Costa Rica. This means that there might be a chance for a rematch between the Mexican and American teams. History does not favor Mexico, who has never beat the United States.

The tournament is taking place in Mexico, which means that Mexico favors from a home crowd. The game against the United States set a viewing record for a woman’s football, and I’m guessing a large influx of those new viewers are following the women’s side after the men’s poor performance in their Olympic qualifier.

The game against Canada looks to be interesting because it was the men’s Canadian team that advanced out of the group stage instead of Mexico. This means that the women have an interesting opportunity to avenge their male counterparts.

The women’s national team won their first game against Jamaica by a margin of 8-1. That’s more goals scored in one game than the men scored in their whole tournament. The highlight player of the match was Evelyn López who scores half of Mexico’s goals.

The women’s next game is on Sunday against the US, and although this game isn’t the traditional rivalry, with many Mexican football fans looking to see their team compete for a medal in the olympics, I’m sure there will be some hype surrounding this female border battle.

Sí se puede.

In the men dominated sport of football the womens teams are hardly talked about. With a country’s hopes at their feet, it’s now the El Tri’s women who are expected to qualify for Beijing.

Womens CONCACAF Olympic qualifying starts in early April(2nd-13th) in Ciudad Juarez,Mexico. The team is led by Leonardo Cuellar and by Barcelona player Maribel Dominguez. Although they are ranked at 22nd in the world the task ahead of them is still difficult as they have been drawn with teams such as the US(currently #2) and Jamaica.

Mexico has not provided much support previously to the womens team and they often lack suitable fields and funding. In the past months many of the major mens teams have however fielded teams in the Womens League which will hopefully elevate the sport.

And let’s hope that the womens team has more huevos than the mens team to get to Beijing and make the country proud.
