Also, history is made in Italy.

Spain:

Rafael Marquez (FC Barcelona):

Rafa was on the bench and did not feature in Barca’s 0-2 victory at Malaga on Saturday. Likely that he’s being rested for the Champions League match against Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday.

Jonathan Dos Santos (Barcelona Atlétic):

Jonathan played all 90 minutes in Barca Atlétic’s 3-2 loss against Sant Andreu.

Andres Guardado (Deportivo de La Coruña):

Guardado played all 90 minutes in Depor’s 1-0 victory over Villarreal.

Hugo Sanchez (coach, Almeria):

Almeria drew 2-2 at home against Racing Santander.

England:

Carlos Vela (Arsenal FC):

Vela was on the bench and did not feature in Arsenal’s 0-1 victory over Fulham. That dumbass Nicklas Bendtner just got into a car accident today (he’s okay) but is still ruled out for tomorrow’s match against Olympiakos, so expect Carlos to make an appearance.

Giovani Dos Santos (Tottenham Hotspur):

Giovani is injured from last Wednesday’s Carling Cup match against Preston North End and will be out for about a month.

Guillermo Franco (West Ham United):

West Ham is playing today, and Guille isn’t even on the bench.

Germany:

Ricardo Osorio (VfB Stuttgart):

Osorio didn’t even make the bench in Stuttgart’s 0-3 victory over Eintrach Frankfurt.

Italy:

Miguel Layun (Atalanta BC):

Layun came off the bench in the 82nd minute in Atalanta’s 1-1 draw at Chievo Verona. This is the first time a Mexican has ever made an appearance in Serie A.

Holland:

Carlos Salcido (PSV Eindhoven):

Salcido was on the bench and didn’t participate in PSV’s 3-1 victory over Willem II.

Francisco “Maza” Rodriguez (PSV Eindhoven):

Maza played all 90 minutes in PSV’s 3-1 victory over Willem II. His partnership with Andre Oojier is considered the most effective option for the team and Maza is quickly winning over fans.

Hector Moreno (AZ Alkmaar):

Moreno played all 90 minutes in AZ’s 1-0 loss to FC Utrecht.

Greece:

Antonio De Nigris (Larissa FC):

Tano played all 90 minutes in Larissa’s 0-0 draw against Giannina.

Ukraine:

Nery Castillo (FC Dnipro):

What do you think. Not even on the bench this weekend. The man is finished and he’s only in his mid 20’s.

Finland:

Alberto Ramirez (FC Inter Turku):

Ramirez played all 90 in Inter’s 2-2 draw against Tamu.

A new season is upon us, and although several leagues are up and running already we’re just beginning our coverage. We have some old faces, some new faces, and some that we’re not really sure of.

The Spanish league has yet to resume, but there is still some form of play going on there. Elsewhere, everyone’s teams looked to have a good weekend.

Spain

Rafael Marquez(Barcelona)-As well all know, Rafa is currently out injured. But, don’t fret. His estimated time out was about 10-15 days when he first diagnosed, meaning he should be making his way back soon for the start of La Liga.

Jonathan Dos Santos(Barcelona)- The younger Dos Santos was promoted to Barca’s first team so expect some cameos every once in a while thanks to Pep’s trust in the young ones. This weekend he made it onto the list for the Spanish Supercup clash against Athletic Bilbao. Unfortunately, Jonathan didn’t make it onto the field but saw Barca win 2-1 in the first leg.

Guillermo Franco(?)-His contract is up with Villarreal, and it seems like he does not want to join a team in Mexico. His plans are to continue in Europe, so we’ll leave him here until he finally resolves his case.

Andres Guardado(Deportivo La Coruna)- Depor lost the Carranza trophy 1-0 against Sevilla.

Hugo Sanchez(Almeria)- Hugo keeps on preparing for the preseason, and most recently lost to the second division team, Elche, 2-1.

England

Carlos Vela(Arsenal)-Vela was not called upon to help in Arsenal’s 6-1 thrashing of Everton in the first game of season for the Gunners.

Giovani Dos Santos(Tottenham)- Dos Santos seems to be repeating the same story from last season. Once more, Harry Rednapp didn’t call up Dos Santos’ services for the Spur’s 2-1 win over Liverpool. His performances have seemed to have caught the eye of Inter.

Germany

Ricardo Osorio(Vfb Suttgart)- Osorio did not play in Stuttgart’s 4-2 win over SC Freiburg.

Italy

Miguel Layun(Atalanta)- Did not play in Atalanta’s 1-0 win over Cesena in the Coppa Italia. He will be wearing the number 19 jersey.

Netherlands

Carlos Salcido(PSV)- Salcido played in PSV’s 4-3 win over Ajax, but was taken out of the game after being a contributing factor to several of the opposition’s goals.

Maza Rodriguez(PSV)-Maza replaced Salcido in the 4-3 win over Ajax.

Hector Moreno(AZ Alkaamar)- Moreno played all 90 mins in the 6-0 win over RKC Waalwijk.

Turkey

Antonio De Nigris(Ankaraspor)- His team is trying to reduce his salary.

Ukraine

Nery Castillo(Dnipro)-To be updated with his crazy antics.

Javier Aguirre has released his list of players called up for the game against the US down at the Azteca.

Despite the rumors, ‘Conejo’ Perez is not on the roster. Ochoa and Corona are the two on the list, and it seems safe to assume that Ochoa will be under the sticks for the game against the US.

Juarez, Castro, and Magallon will be returning after the stint with the national team. The only one that is surprising is Castro. He had decent performances, but at other times it was a wonder why he was there.
Marquez, Osorio, and Salcido are on the list. Marquez said that he’d be ready to play about 45 mins(coming back from his injury, not the time allotted for a red card), but I didn’t think that Osorio was ready.
Aaron Galindo from Chivas, and Oscar Rojas from America are also on the defense.
I’m surprised that Fausto Pinto has been left out since he did a a good job at the Gold Cup. Maybe facing the more physical players of the US kept him out?

In the midfield Gerardo Torrado and Israel Castro are back. Also, Andres Guardado and Cuautemoc Blanco. I’m not really sure if Blanco’s inclusion is right. Sure, he’ll add that creativity, but it’s also time to let go of this player.

Up front Medina, Giovani, Vela, Sabah, and Franco are back. Not really surprising since they performed well in the Gold Cup, although Medina may have to more consistency finding the net.
Nery Castillo is also on the list. It’s surprising since he doesn’t seem to get playing time with his club, and on the latest call ups has underperformed.
I’m surprised that Pablo Barrera was left out. He came in a as a substitute and performed well during games.

So who deserves to be here, and who doesn’t?

Any surprises?

Surprises

‘Maza’ Rodriguez- Hasn’t had regular playing time
Hector Moreno- Is still recovering from his injury
Cuautemoc Blanco- He declared that he wanted to come back, but he’s 36 now…
Guillermo Franco- He hasn’t been playing either
Oscar Perez- There’s better choices out there

Most of the call ups are the usual suspects. Of course, Marquez is out because of his recent operation.

Zinha who has been pulling strings at Toluca is still missing, and Luis Michel who had a good showing in the Clausura 2009 with Chivas(when is he FINALLY going to get his turn?). And of course Oswaldo Sanchez who seems to be a regular on recent lists.
