Will Blanco get the Gazza treatment?

March 31st, 2006 | By: John | 6 Comments »

Their similarities are striking: extremely talented creators, mercurial personalities, both a little pudgy, at odds with the National team coach, their inclusion to the world cup roster hangs in the balance. Cuauhtemoc Blanco’s situation smells a whole lot like Gazzagate.

If one took a glance at the morning papers in Mexico this morning, the messages are mixed. Cuauhtemoc Blanco is not going to Germany. No, anonymous sources say he is going to Germany. 8 years ago, Paul Gascoigne was all set to be included on England’s France 98 squad, only to be disappointed by England Manager Glenn Hoddle. Who felt the worst after the snub? Rod Stewart. It was widely reported that Stewart and Gazza went on a bender the night before the roster selection, and Stewart was convinced that he had something to do with it. With Gazzagate behind him, Glenn Hoddle took England to the round of 16 but went no further.

Although Blanco may not have the personal problems that (it was reported) that Gazza had, he is still Mexico’s most naturally gifted player of his generation. He was quoted earlier in the week by saying that National Team needs him, and he needs the national team. “It’s like a romance,” he added. The bottom line is that Blanco continues to burn with desire to go to Germany. And with Mexico’s lack of playmakers in the midfield….We will have to wait until Sunday night to make sure. I just hope Rod Stewart is nowhere near Mexico this weekend.

That is a pretty fair analogy, although I think Blanco is a bit past his prime and doesn’t really have a place on the team. Maybe rod stewart will disagree.

Blanco is washed up, take a look at him in action for America, with his beer gut. He is slow and dives every chance he gets now.

If Mexico does anything past the 2nd round it wont be because of Blanco. In fact, Gazza wasnt missed at all for England they choked against England because Beckham left them a man down for almost the whole game.

I would compare more the Blanco situation with the Hugo Sanchez, one in ‘94. He went to the world cup, didn’t play. Since then everybody hated Megía Barón (Coach of Mexico of 94). I think that would hapen if Blanco goes. He wont play and if we lose before the quarterfinals everybody is going to hate Lavolpe

John, I would disagree on Blanco not having the personal problems Gazza had.

He is a known wife beater, is currently being sued in the U.S. for beating the crap out of a helper at a bar and for the longest time could not enter the U.S. for other legal problems (he would have gone to jail had he travelled there).

The fact of the matter is that even though he is great on the field, he has a very shady personality, and has been known to be a dressing room wrecker.
