What’s with the defeatist attitude?
So Mexico didn’t exactly tear it up in the group. Last I checked, they still made it into the second round. Then I read this guy comparing this team to the Argentina 78 edition.
I know Mexico hasn’t looked like world beaters, but they also haven’t sucked that bad. And today they didn’t quit. They also weren’t outscored 12-2 in three games like they were in Argentina. I can cite a ton of teams that have stumbled into the 2nd round only to catch lightning in a bottle.
So to all you nay sayers — Lighten up.

Big baller..
you have much to say and really i enjoy all of your comments. I don’t know waht you mean about the fans. I know that there are a lot of people backing this team. In fact i know there more backing this team than againts it. We are mexico, we have great hearts. Iknow this becasue I’m mexican.
i have never insulted the fans, nor do inted to do so. I’m just sick of the whole blaming thing. you can’t blame coaches and players, you just have to support your team. I do, i support and back any player that is on the squad. from franco to our man kikin, to campos and la volpe. I love them all. I know that there is something wrong with our team. but i’m not going to give up like many people on this blog. They can point fingers all they want, but you know everyone deep inside of them knows that on saturday they will be standing up during the natinal anthem and will have butterflies in their stomachs when the show our flag. everyone knows they can win.
so, I’m sorry if i was acting like a clown. i think you missed my point. I love the fans. i hate the media. the la volpe comment was for the media not for or beloved fans..
so, let’s support our team. let the argentinians come in here and bash mexico, bash franco and la volve, bash kikin… and of course lets keep hoping, lets keep praying that mexico beats argentina.
WE CAN DO IT!!!!

One thing is for sure we’re not losing 6-0 to Argentina on saturday are they a better team then us? for sure but I think our Tricolor owes us a game of brilliancy and this might be it…then again Maza might score to own goals and we pack our bags back to Mexico(can someone explain me what the hell is Maza doing in the national team? I just don’t get it)
If there is a moment for redemption and 2 show the rest of the world we’re for good this is the game all odds against us and no one expecting nothing out of us….I just hope we put a fight on Saturday!!!

Generally speaking we as fans have been way too critical with unfair expectations. I must have seen a different game because I really thought Mexico played its best game so far (minus Bravo and Rafa’s performance). Yet immediately after the game I hear fans bitching about how much Mexico sucks. Don’t we get enough abuse from everywhere else?
Most of the world powers see us as a joke. I know the team has yet to prove they belong with the big boys, but I truly believe we are a lot closer than most give credit for. The media is worse. I think all those idiot jouralists really want Mexico to fail, because that’s all they have. Those journalists and other Mexicans take more pleasure in saying “I told you so” than seeing the team prevail. Criticism is good but what these people are doing is simply nasty bitterness that is meant only to make a situation worse. That’s precisely why I don’t want to see Hugo Sanchez as the next coach. It seems he is more concerned with the advancement of his own career than the success of the team.

Luis –
Let’s start in 1982. Italy barely makes it through on goal difference with 3 points, then a guy named Paolo Rossi catches fire.
1986 — Belgium makes the 2nd round with only 2 points, and then defeats Russia and Spain on the way to the semi finals
1990– Argentina backs in to the second round as a 3rd place team, then defeats Brazil, Yugoslavia and Italy (in Italy) before losing to ze germans.
1994 — Italy again. Left for dead when Nigeria scores early after coming in 3rd in the group of death (which Mexico won). Then bags Nigeria, Spain and Bulgaria.
2002– The USA needs a late goal from Korea vs. Portugal to assure their spot. I don’t think I need to mention what happened after that.

Immer die selbe Sch****e…
“Defeatist attitude”?
How about a team that can’t give a good pass for 170 whole minutes until Rafa’s last-gasp shot at Castro in the second half?
How about a team that doesn’t press the opponent and leaves half the field empty because they’re so afraid of being outrun BECAUSE THEY CAN’T BE AR**D TO TRAIN ENOUGH?
How about a team that’s been kicked out of every competition it’s played since 2002 except for the one nobody really cares about (Confederations)? Remember how Brazil B humiliated this same bunch at the last Copa América? Losing on penalties in 1995 cost Mejía Barón his job; being SQUASHED by Adriano earned Lavolpe a pat on the back.
I’ve had enough of Lavolpe’s whining. OF his system, which wasn’t that great even at club level; he played only 1 final with Atlas in 1999 and lost it because of the same fatal flaw: neither he, nor his “system” have any cojones. Of the hysterical hype and meddling by Televisa; of the stupid conformism and of the equally stupid attitude that says you’re somehow unpatriotic and traitorous if you say they’re playing rubbish and that the continent’s best-paid league should have some better-playing people in it.
Look at Argentina: Pekerman wins the juvenile Cups and they give him the real deal; Jesús Ramírez, the only World Champion trainer we’ve ever had, is narrating the matches for the cause of it all, Televisa, the TV monopoly and owner of the MExican football scene. WTH is going on in these people’s minds?

Hans, chill. We all know we have not played good at all, but a fan can only hope for the best.
And don’t worry, Lavolpe is gone after the WC, and who knows, maybe Chucho Ramirez will be our next coach.

Hans, are you BLANCO . it’s ok if you are… just tell us.. It’s cool man. we wont bash you here.

The problem, again, is that Mexico does not “connect” its play… someone above said that Mexico dominated the ball, but that’s not the game I saw. A sloppy midfield, and a spotty defence and occasionally very strong attack. I am an American in California who totally supports El Tri… but the three games have shown huge holes. Argentina will win 5-2.

mexico to me looks like a team largely made up of people without talent/skill on the balll.. they just don’t look skilled as is the case with other teams…this has always been the case since i can remember…
el pajaro hernandez had skill for a while and of course hugo sanchez..
mexico can beat argentina if everything goes right and they have some luck but i would be very surprised…
also argentina is always tougher physically and mentally…
just my 3 cents

Iam not sure if someone has said this but I think Mexico needs to wake up and will against Argenentin to win and possibably go all the way.

John and René, thanks a lot.
René does have a good point. Their has only been 7 teams that have won a World Cup, and taking out Uruguay and France I think the other 5 teams are the nations that own soccer (Germany, England, Argentina, Brazil and Italy). And they can do almost anything.
Still I “quote” the Argentinian captian (I WILL quote him a lot): ” Mexico has not showed the football they’re capable of demonstrating, but they can show it”, when asked about how has Mexico change in the last year 2005 Confederations- 2006 WC, “I hope a lot, if not they’re going to give us trouble”. When asked about what do they think about us: “The last 2 games have been real hard”.
So I say: BRING EM ON!!!
MEXICO, MEXICO, MEXICO!!!

I’m one of the ones that put (almost) all the blame on LaVolpe. I don’t like him. He’s arrogant and stubborn to the level of being blind to see his mistakes. It was his mistake to place Rafa out of his natural position; it’s been his fault that he hasn’t defined the lineup in 4 years; 5 or so games before the WC he was playing with Castro on the right, but then, all of a sudden, fot the Cup it is Méndez who is the starter; it was his mistake to play with 2 ball recoverers against Angola; it was his mistake to bring injured players, or players at 60% of their potential; and so on. HOWEVER, he’s got one good point: Portugal did not run over us, not even when we were one man short. Even with all the trouble we went into during the match, we had at least four clear opportunities to even the score; we just missed them. That happens in soccer. Even Platini, Baggio, and Zico have missed penalty kicks in a World Cup, translated into their teams being kicked off or losing the final. And they were not crucified by their fans.
I, for one, am a believer. I will ALWAYS believe that we can win the next match. From now on it will be a different story. Now is the time for the TRI will play to it’s full potential.

It is sad to see that people outside of Mexico see things in a clearer perspective:
From Diario Olé (argentinian):
El seleccionado mexicano fue muy criticado por la prensa de su país tras la derrota ante Portugal. “Esta manera de clasificar hace pensar que es mejor regresar a casa de una vez , que seguir haciendo el ridículo”, sostuvo el diario Ovaciones. En tanto, el periódico Excelsior publicó: “Es un equipo que promete, pero no cumple”. No es para tanto, che…
And I still don’t understand why people thank Iran. Angola needed 3 goals to eliminate Mexico. Three, Tres, Trois… 1, 2, 3. And yet everyone says that we got help from Iran to go to the next round. I find that untrue… at all times Mexico was the one in the driver’s seat. It was Mexico’s spot to lose. Say what you want, but Mexico deserved it more than Angola for one reason only: we tried to score more and did so. Aren’t we supposed to reward teams that try to score more goals? Well there you have it… Mexico did not play beautifully, and yes, we are all frustrated about it, but to say that we should be returning to Mexico because we are unworthy of the spot is ridiculous. Those writers should remember that Mexico did not win on European soil until 1998, and only won once for that matter. For teams outside of Europe to go through to the next round in European soil is not an easy feat. Just ask the Americans… they have yet to win a match in Europe.
So yes… let’s be critical, and ask more of the team, but lets not backstab them now and wish them ill. They are still playing, while 16 other teams will not, and with a bit of luck, they will read from the Argentinian script that allowed them to win 1-0 against Brazil in 1990 without deserving it, and go on to do better things.

Again, do not read too much into press clippings of a few jaded writers.
The support for EL TRI has been unprecedented. Just think of the kind of effort it takes for 130,000 Mexicans to travel to Germany and spend a small fortune following the team. Tickets were going for $1,000 euros and up to $2,000 euros for the Portugal game. The fans have been SMASH HIT IN GERMANY!
Back in the Americas, the ratings are record high to watch the games. The Mexican fans are #1, no doubt about it. It is confirmed because we’ve never even won a cup but, as I mentioned before: for better or worse expectations are high and we all get sucked up into this emotionally.
Having said that, this is not your daddy’s Mexico, so in other words EL TRI isn’t going to show up on Saturday in Leipzig, and ask for autographs and ask to take pictures with Messi, Tevez, Riquelme etc… before the game or afterwards.
No, this is a rivalry. Let the yellow cards fly. Remember, it only takes one stinking goal to win the game theoretically. As crappy as we have played for stretches, this is a whole new enchilada the round of 16, the more and more I think about, let’s pull an Argentina, on Argentina.

Louie: No, I’m not Blanco, about the only thing dragon-tie did right was leaving him at home; Blanco was shot physically, his last season with américa was crap. He would have done about as good as Franco, which is nothing.
Big Baller: It’s 30,000, not 130,000. We’re still a middle-income country 10,000 km from Germany. Tickets cost an arm and a leg. (US$ 900 round trip)
About the “bitterness”: You know what I want? I want to see these guys play like the U17s. No fear. No missed passes. No blown penalties (at least not 9 of every 10). I want them to overwhelm, like the kids did a Dutch side that was the U17 European champion. I want Brazil to wake up because they’re playing MEXICO, and that puts the fear of God into them. I want Argentina to quake in their shorts because the Green Nightmare is coming.
Sí se puede. Exactly. That’s why it’s so damn frustrating to see them like against Portugal, time after time, every time.

Hans: I heard the same number of 130,000 strong. Maybe only 30,000 from mexico but there are millions in LA alone and the rest of the US (why do you think they’re so pissed?)…but you may be right.
The more and more I think about it, the better I feel about our chances against the hated ones. I can’t believe we’re going to flame out, this team is too good for that.

I’d like to believe Mexico can beat Argentina, but this is the World Cup. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Well, i think that my country does care about winning, but i also think that we care too much about our players, we see them as part of us, Mexico feels soccer more deeply than other countries, we feel it with the heart and the skin.
Let´s have hope and fury! Mexico has a ticket that 16 teams wish to have… 16…. isn´t that a good point?… maybe we are not the maximum beaters, but that 11 players team in Germany has 100 million of hearts and souls in their hands…
WE ARE AS ABLE AS ANY OTHER TEAM..
VAMOS MEXICOO!! CON TODO!!!

Hans, I think you just summed up the expectations that we all have in this team.
Unfortunately, this time, I’m affraid it wont happen, unless that is they do the not easy task of kicking argentina out of the tournament.

I just want to say that in one game (second round) everything is possible. If the elimination process was two games or two out of three…
Viva Mexivo!
SI SE PUEDE!

That’s the spirit. It was Rene who mentioned earlier Argentina beating Brazil in 1990 when they got into the round of 16 on a 3rd place ticket.
They were completely outplayed by Brazil, mustered one clear chance the whole game on a counter attack from Maradona to Cannigia. That is what the round of 16 is about. No style points. Just finish. Have the game of your life.
Mexico will have their opportunities, it’s just a matter of if they REALLY WANT TO MAKE HISTORY!
