This just in… Rafa likes it at Barcelona
It looks like Chelsea’s plans for world domination will have to be completed without Rafael Marquez. The Mexican skipper put an end to any speculation involving a move to the English nouveau juggernaut. In fact, he wants to end his career with the blaugranas.
Why wouldn’t he? There is no language barrier in Barcelona. He is a key player on an extremely talented side. He plays his home games in front of the largest crowd in Europe. He gets to hone his skills against Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi everyday in practice. Don’t think he doesn’t appreciate the attention, though. “I don’t know if it (the Chelsea offer) is real or not but the fact that they are interested in me is pleasing because it means other teams are taking notice of what I am doing.” He added, “I respect English football but I want to finish my football career here at Barcelona.”
There have also been rumors of a possible link to AC Milan as well, and Marquez won’t close the door on that opportunity just yet. “I am interested in Italian football but it’s something I would consider in the long term.” His current contract with Barça expires in 2007, and he stated he will speak to Barça first before he would entertain any other offers. Marquez is determined to excel at the upcoming World Cup, but his attentions are focused presently on helping Barcelona win La Liga as well as the Champions Trophy in St. Dénis on May 17.
