The Final Countdown
The National Team convened at the National team training center yesterday after their 10 day vacation. They have exactly 60 days to prepare for their most important match against the pesky Team Melli.
After undergoing medical examinations yesterday, the next few days will test the fitness of the players, and we will see for sure if the Cabrito and Zinha will be world cup fit.
After the series of fitness tests, the team is off to training camp in sunny Acapulco, which I am guessing has swelled beyond capacity during Semana Santa. I wonder if the team will play “avoid the trash” when they go swimming in the Bay. It won’t be a resort vacation, though. The team will have three-a-days. Mexico is the first country to begin their world cup preparations.
To update the Dos Santos saga: as we expected, Memo Cantu downplayed the severity of the situation at his news conference yesterday, and mentioned that the door is always open for Zizinho Dos Santos to discuss any problems they may have. They were teammates on the Panzas verdes, so they have known each other for a while. He did not want to comment further because he wanted to discuss the issue privately as opposed to the tried and true method of sending messages to the press, which of course is exactly what he did. Stay tuned.

You know John: The fact that that piece of information about Gio is not getting as much attention elsewhere (didn’t see it Ovaciones, Esto, nor aztecadeportes today either) leads me to believe the problem is not as big an issue as Record/espndeportes wants to make it look like.
I see cooler heads prevail on this. Cantu said exactly what I thought: this was some poor low level administrator making a poor decision on when to inform the family about the decision of not taking Jonathan to the tournament (and again, you try to wait to the very last minute to make a decision on a valuable player who is injured to see if he can play). Again, there might be some poor decisions on the communication aspect, but this is perfectly normal here and anywhere else.
Even Claudio Suarez said that he shouldn’t let the administrative aspects dictate his presence oon a national team. He said that it is normal for hiccups like that to happen and that has gone through many of those before.

Agree.
The Dos Santos thing would’ve been big if what ESPN Deportes said was true.
I don’t think Giovanni would jeopardize his future with “El Tri” just like that. Besides, Johnatan still has a lot time to prove himself, I mean he is under 17.
I hope they don’t do anything stupid.

LC and Rene, you two are more optimistic than I am. Quite some time ago, Blanco had the very same complaints about the federation. He was playing in Valladolid, got an airline ticket at the last minute w/ 3-4 lay-overs and Palencia, whom he saw in the Barcelona airport, assumed they were on the same flight. Palencia was in fact on a different flight on a first class flight direct to Mexico City.
The game they were to play was against Trinidad and the story got worse for Blanco, he got crushed and his speed forever lost when he was brutally tacked in the Azteca. On top of that, they never covered his medical expenses or flight costs.
Point is, the federation leaves their stars out hanging to dry all the time from Hugo, Galindo, Blanco, Suarez etc…it is a long list. The Dos Santos boys are probably sending them a clear strong message. Don’t mess with us or we’ll walk. Sounds logical.
The reason you probably dont hear a lot about it in Mexico should not come as a surprise to people. It is called censorship. Why would Televisa or any subsidiary publish or do a feature on Gio when they are the ones who allegedly owe them $ from sponsorhip bonuses from Mexco’s only world cup title? That would be shooting yourself in the foot.

Uhm. Last I heard, TV azteca and Esto are not a part of Televisa. In fact, TV Azteca would have a field day about it.
The truth of the matter is that things were said in the heat of argument. Even when Televisa interviewed their mom, she did not admit that their sons were leaving the National Team, only that Jonathan was very upset at the way things were done. This probably means someone already talked to them, and things were starting to calm down.

This Just in:
Guillermo Cantú, director of the Mexican National Teams, said that the Jonathan and Giovanni Dos Santos case was all a big misunderstanding.
He said ” I understand that something was published, the comunication that I’ve had with Zizinho (Father of Jonathan and Giovanni), not from now, but since we where partners in León, has always been open, he has my number and when he has had questions, he has done them directly to me”
Cantú said “I really don’t know what the problem is” He did say that it was Pablo Luna, de coach of the U-21 who maid the decision of leaving Jonathan out for the Toulon Tournament.
“It is very important, Cantú said, to keep open the comunication chanel, because when I’ve talked with Zizinho I give him a call and viceversa, that is what’s healthier for all, I don’t like to send messages trhough press”
He asured he didn’t have any problems with Zizinho or the players ” I understand there can be situations in wich you don’t agree with not being in the team (Like the Blanco’s case in the Tri Mayor), I understand it because I’ve lived it and because its part of the game”.
I guess we can only wait for a Dos Santos story.
John: I suggest you ad to the Title something about The Jonathan story, since the dialogue is heading that way.

I do not know about this, but my “spyder senses” tell me they are trying to find a “honorable” way out of the Mexican national team because, lets face it, they have very little afiliation to Mexico and have probably been offered another nationality (my guess is they Spanish Federation is luring them into becoming Spaniards). And since they have played for “el Tri” only as underaged that means they can play for another mayor national team if they hold the nationality.
