The Deadly Sins of Mexican football Part 1

FMF MoneyAfter the disaster that was the Olympic Qualifications, the Mexican national team has lost some of its luster to the people who matter most, their fans. Constant false promises and dreams crushed at the helm of a nation that fervently wants silverware to prove that they are a potential world power have left its citizenship bitter and pessimistic. Mexican football has too many restrictions that will keep it from reaching greatness and it’s predominantly due to the fact that the Mexican football federation only cares about the money.

Mexican football is one of the most successful in the world speaking in economic terms. The large amount of Mexican American immigrants found in the United States allow it to have an international market which Hugo capitalized last year by having the FMF’s most successful quarter in the history of the association. This means that Mexico is forced to play friendly games in the United States against teams like Guatemala or El Salvador when they should be playing at the Bernabeu or the Stadio Olympico playing teams that are critical to the development of a World Cup contender. Instead of thinking for the best interests of the players, the Mexican federation decides to waste its friendlies against common rivals such as the United States or Costa Rica because they know that the majority of the money will stay in their pockets. Comparatively, the United States national team is constantly traveling to foreign countries in which they are confronted by adverse weather and a variety of play styles ranging from European to African. Mexico has to realize that it can not develop as a team if it does not do the same because games against tough opponents and tougher crowds allow it to play under a different pressure than a stadium that is chanting “si se puede” to motivate their lackluster play. Its somewhat satisfying that we are beginning to see friendly games such as Ghana and Nigeria but the national team needs more specially since there will be no Confederations Cup or Olympics for the boys in green.

To be continued…..
