Se acabó
Mexico takes Argentina to extra time, but falls in extra time as Maxi Rodriguez scores the best goal of the tournament to defeat Mexico 2-1. After early goals by both sides, both teams had plenty of chances to break the deadlock in the first 90 minutes, but to no avail.
The moved to extra time, wher Rodriguez hammerd home a chested volley past the desperately outstrteched fingertips of Oswaldo Sanchez. Mexico crashes out, there is no 5th game for the Tri. We now set out sights on South Africa 2010.
Felicidades a Argentina por una merecida victoria, y gracias a los jugadores y aficionados mexicanos que hicieron de este mundial una alegría para todos nosotros que no nos tocó ir a Alemania.

Good Job Mexico: chins up!, you will be get beeter as soon as you leave the concacaf and start to deal with south american teams more frequently (as was been seen in the America Cup tournament). Bad luck to clinch the best Argentina in the last 20 years, but impressive match that shows the best mexican attitude. You must avoid attack your team in the middle of the worldcup.

It could be worse guys. Did anyone catch that disgraceful display of horrible futbol in the Portugal v. Holland game.
It could be worse. Our coach could be Scolari, that guys is a clown and sets fair play back 30 yrs.
I knew Portugal were supreme divers after Mexico played them but this takes the cake, it was olympic caliber diving on both sides.
Van Baster tarnishes his legacy forever. Smart move leaving Ruud Van Nistelroy on the bench. What a joke.
I am proud Mexico displayed good sportsmanship and went out with honor and we can hold our head up high. I hope no young kids saw this embarrasing game today, Portugal are embarrasing themselves.

Louie:
There is still a lot of football to be played.
I consider myself a fan of the sport first and foremost. Yes, I’m sad to see Mexico leave so soon, but there are still a lot of exciting matches to watch.
It seems to me that the Argentina vs. Germany match is going to be good. And as much as I hate to see the lack of fair play from both Portuguese and Dutch, I would love for Portugal to kick the Brits off the World Cup. They play incredibly boring football and do not deserve to be in the quarterfinals.

Mexico is a great team that can take out anyone. However, I think all of us Mexicans are tired of just going out with honors. The game with Argentina was the best so far. Watching these two powerhouses go at it was intense. I just wished Mexico had won, they deserved it. We are ranked 4th in the world for a reason. We have qualified to the second round all last 4 World Cups facing tough squads. FIFA made us head of group for the first time and we deserved it. But we get stuck in that second round all the time!!! Eventually we will surpass that, hopefully next time. Congratulations to Argentina they killed us with that out of this world goal. It hurts my heart to lose but thats the way it is. Who cares if the agies are trashing Mexico, we would be doing the same if we had won. Viva Mexico cabrones!!!!!!

Rene I completely agree with you, but Argentina deserved the win..
and as for England, welcome to the club of england haters.. they are the luckiest most boring unskilled team in the cup, and our sneaking their way past the tournament. They must be so happy with the sending’s off from Portugal. England must lose!

Hotshotzz:
Yes we are ranked 4th for a reason:
we play more international matches than almost any other team, which allows the number of wins to generate points to scale the list.
The reality is different. We are definately a top 16 team… the fact that we reach best of 16 every world cup proves that, but there is no way you can say we are 4th without laughing a bit, because of how ridiculous that sounds, just like the U.S. was placed 5th or the Czechs were places 2nd.

Shouldn’t all the mariachis be home by now? This is about the World Cup and last I heard the cucarachas are out of it.

If you hate us so much why bother coming here? Let the cucarachas party it up with their mariachis in their roach motel. And oh sweet LAURY, when your at home under grass and pines caressing your beautiful white skin in your Armany jacket delirious from hunger, we’ll pray for you after another successful day of picking tomatoes in the sun, whilst eating beans which we purchased at walmart that maybe, just maybe the ches will to have a meal other than their egoistical merit which they so rightfully deserve. HASTA LA VICTORIA SIEMPRE! (just make sure you don’t faint beforehand).

Ohhh man we fell short again!! yeah it’s great we played a World Cup “classic” and at least we leave Germany with our heads held high.
There is no time of thinking of thw what ifs and time to start thinking about the future…whoever coaches our team(Lavople will most likely leave)needs 4 years for develpoment.
No offense to Mexican coaches or anythinh but I think we need an experienced South American or European coach. They can show us how to improve our psyche and become an even more disciplined team.An outsider wouldn’t put up with all the dramas and fits from players, media and fans as supposed to an insider that will probably would crack to that same kind of pressure.
While its true that there is promise and potential with our youth players we need to groom them.I hope that after this WC at least Oswaldo and Salcido stay in Europe.
Before even thinking of winning a world championship we should aim for a Copa America and take a one step at a time approach. As people have posted Giovanni,Vela, etc need to start playing with the big boys. Its been a pleasure posting and reading your comments.Take care.

There is one simple truth about this game. Mexico played good and Argentina played horrible. With this type of performance from both teams it is know wonder that we had a 2 – 1 result with dubious reffering. That being said, when you pit an Argentina @ 100% vs Mexico @ 100% los Aztecas don’t stand a chance. Hands down you are just another CONCACAF team with limited international experience and no World Championships Cups, even in their under 20 team. If you want to be number one Mexico you have to start some where, and the World Cup and FIFA’s bullshit world rankings are not it. You won the U-17 in 2005, now try and work on that before you consider yourself World Class material.

DaveC:
You have to ask yourself this:
Did Argentina played horribly just because they had a bad day, or because Mexico made them look that way? Almost every analyst who know anything about football says it was the later. Mexico MADE Argentina look bad, just like Argentina made Serbia and Montenegro look horrible.
Sometimes it is just an undeniable fact that some teams are not necessarily as good as advertised, and others are not as bad or limited as one may think.
And about that limited international experience… it seems you forget the fact that mexico is now playing copas Libertadores and Sudamericanas year in and year out, and Copa America every two years. That international experience is starting to show.
All this BS about Argentina at a 100% would kick Mexican butt is getting old. The reality is Argentina hasn’t been able to win by more than one goal for more than a decade.
Don’t sell Mexico’s performance short. They are getting better every year.

Big baller – no offense but let me ask you this. What if the dutch had done to you what was done to C. Ronaldo early in that game? What if it was Marquez on the carpet with a crowd of dutch around him? What would Mexico have done? Exactly, they would have rallied around their team, just like Portugal did. To say Scolari doesn’t know what fair play is just is wrong. Portugal hasn’t give a red card since 2002. Scolari is an example Van Basten should learn from. La Volpe would have gone ballistic if Mexico were treated the same way.

Luis:
You do have to admit that calling Figo over for a substitution, then stoping, and finally substituting him again later was just a ruse to keep the clock ticking.
Taht is not fair play, and that was all Scolari. Granted, it was a trick just like make a substitution in the final 2 minutes of the game, but not within the spirit of fair play.
now saying Scolari is a clown is probably an exageration by Big Baller. I have the utmost respect on that man and his ability to lead teams. It takes more than clowning around to have your teams go undefeated in a world cup for 11 matches.

I hardly think Mexico has limited international experience. They play more friendlies year in and year out than any other team in the world.

Laury…you are a bad boy…:)
I think you forgot your country is in a terrible economic situation ( worst than Mexico ), so I dont know how you much time more you will afford the BMW and the Armani stuff…
Your debt to the FMI is around some billions…so please dont thrown stones to Mexicans…
And another thing… Argentina has been much overated like England and they will “die” next to Germany….

Big-Baller-Shot-Caller…chill man..the best you can do now is watch the game on tv…you lost against Portugal..they were best than you and your mexicans..the dutch…the iranians and the angolans…England next

Rene – with all the confusion in that game how can you possibly blame Scolari for that? That game was out of control.
I know the PT – MX game was not too long ago, but please consider this. What does Portugal gain from such a violent game? That’s right nothing. Our style of play is based on speed, movement, and technique. If you guys watched Portugal for the last two years, you will see that it has been an endless string of teams that have used this tactic against Portugal to take us out of our game. Yesterday it backfired on the Dutch that’s all. Mexico gained my respect for trying to out play us instead of assaulting us. We can differ on who played best, but that’s pointless. Football is what it is and results sometimes go against you. Portugal has had plenty of those games.
To anyone that thinks Portugal are cheaters and divers, just watch us play some more. When we face a team that wants to play football instead of rugby, you will see what our preffered style of play is. After that game, no one will try that on us again. Only one team on the pitch had anything to gain from such antics.

I don’t understant why Mexicans cannot loose without dignity. You guys have played a great game but you lost and there goes that. I am half Italian and half Salvadorean. I really like Argentina and if they loose against Germany than oh well. It is called soccer. I have been verbally attack by many mexicans only because i support Argentina. That is very ignorant and mexicans need to learn that they are not the only country that deserves to win. Just because we live in Los Angeles were a large mexican community resides, it does not mean that I have to go for Mexico. Don’t get me wrong my best friend is mexican but I do feel sometimes mexicans try to put other countries down.
