Reading Hugo Sanchez´s mind
Ever gotten tired of hearing the mindless jargon of national team coaches and tried to figure out what they´re really saying? I do it all the time, its hard especially when players and coaches try to be politically correct, which is everyday when they talk to a reporter.
Here are some quotes from a Sanchez interview by Alfredo Dominguez Muro from Mexico´s Ovaciones and below them I try to decode what Sanchez´s is really trying to say…
Sanchez:“… El parámetro es SUDÁFRICA 2010, hacia allá va encaminado el proyecto, es la culminación de este ciclo de trabajo…”
translation: Judge me by how Mexico does at the 2010 World Cup, that´s the main goal. The Olympics are just a warm-up.
Sanchez:“… Para las eliminatorias y los Olímpicos busco reforzar con una columna vertebral de jerarquía; el portero ya lo tenemos, faltan un central, un mediocampista y un delantero…”
translation: The team´s hierarchy is set with Rafa Marquez and Salcido as defenders for the Olympics (maybe Magallon?) and Ochoa as the gol keeper. Sanchez just needs to find a central defender, midfield and atttack partner for Giovani. I´m assuming Castillo forms part of the hiearchy of players that are locked in for the Olympics. Finding the missing forward should be easy, maybe it could be Villaluz or Vela? Finding the missing defender and midfield could be tricky.
Sanchez:“… Las puertas están abiertas para todos, el que ande bien aquí tiene su lugar…”
Translation: The door to the Mexican national team is open to any one who is playing good and is in my good graces. It should be noted that Salcido had to apologize to Sanchez for his past wrongs to get back on the national team, according to another article from Ovaciones. Pardo and Osorio have come out saying they have nothing to apologize for since they have done nothing wrong. Have Osorio and Pardo been blacklisted by Sanchez?
Sanchez:“… El PASAPORTE es lo que cuenta, si algún jugador naturalizado anda mejor que uno nacido en México, será convocado, pero en igualdad de circunstancias el nacido acá tiene ventaja…”
Translation: I am my own man and I´m not afraid to call up a nationalized player who is in as good or not better playing conditions than a comparable Mexican player. Needless to say, in a country with a population of over 100 million, it is a big taboo to call up nationalized players who are seen as taking a spot away from Mexican-born players. Former Mexico coach Ricardo LaVolpe got grilled during last year´s World Cup for taking Sinha and Guillermo Franco, two nationalized Mexican players.
