Negrete sounds off
Former National Team star and Pumas stand-out Manuel Negrete is not to thrilled with Ricardo Lavolpe’s run up to the world cup. The player who scored one of the great world cup goals in history believes that Ricardo Lavolpe should have decided on his team at least a year ago.
“Lavolpe has to quit calling up different players for each game,” Negrete Said. He belives that the lack of continuity will not give the team the rhythm and understanding it needs to excel in the Cup. When Negrete took part in the 1986 world cup, his coach, Bora Milutinovic had his players prepare away from their clubs for a whole year before the finals. The only one who didn’t was Hugo Sanchez, who was the only Mexican playing abroad at the time. Bora had this luxury because as hosts, Mexico did not have to qualify. It won’t be a full year of practice, but Mexico’s team will convene in Mid-April (except for the 3 Euros), so they will have a full 60 days of preparation before their first fixture vs. Team Melli.
What area does Negrete think Mexico needs the most help? He believes it to be the front line of attack. “They need to work harder with the midfielders to gain a better understanding.” Negrete also added that over-confidence is one of the Tri’s biggest stumbling blocks come June. “The knockouts are a definite possibility for this team, so long as they are convinced that each game will be extremely difficult.”

He makes some good points but the way things happen these days it would be next to impossible for Lavolpe to have his team selected a year early. Too many things can change in that amount of time.

Lavolpe has said that 80% of the team is set. We are only missing 2 or 3 positions. And that is because Sinha is injured and Carmono wont be allowed to play because of the FIFA Confederations cup incident. I think we have a good team, with Sanchez at the door, Marquea et all on defense, great midfielders and Franco on the attack. Go Mexico!

[...] Borgetti also echoed Manuel Negrete’s sentiments in saying that Mexico cannot go into their games with Iran and Angola overconfident, citing that Angola and Iran were dangerous because they are unknown quantities. Mexico have been guilty in the past of overconfidence, and they were sentenced to a 3-1 drubbing at the hands of Tunisia in the 1978 tournament. It was the first world cup match ever won by an African squad. Mexico fell to even greater depths of misery by losing to Germany 6-0, and Poland 3-1 to round off their feast of futility. [...]
