Motashakkeram means gracias

June 21st, 2006 | By: John | 12 Comments »

Mexico has backed in to the 2nd round after losing 2-1 to Portugal. Omar Bravo missed several opportunities to equalize, including a penalty kick. Iran’s equalizer denies Angola’s bid for victory, for which we say, Motashakkeram. But it really doesn’t matter, because the world cup begins in earnest now.

This next game either vs. Argentina or Holland is the game that Ricardo La Volpe has been working toward, so we will see the culmination of the “Proceso” Saturday at 2 PM CDT.

Again, with everything on the line this was a total meltdown, there is no other way to look at it. Here are my grades:

Lavolpe= F
Salcido= B+
Osorio= B-
Marquez= F
Mendez =B-
Pardo = F
Kikin = A-
Bravo =D+
Perez =D+
Maza= C-
Sanchez= B-
Pineda=D+

Subs:
Castro =C
Guille =C-
Sinha =D

Overall:
-the only passing grades are Salcido and Kikin, everybody else should quickly forget this trainwreck.

-MVP TEAM MELLI!

I have to say it…we don’t deserve to move on. If we play like this against either Argentina or Holland they will humiliate us. I am sick and tired of defending these guys saying to anyone that cares to listen that they are better than this. Maybe they aren’t!

Alberto,
I totally agree with you. we all cheer for mexico, we stop doing whatever we doing, even miss work to cheer for them and this is how they pay us. I’m very disapointed, But more mad at la Volpe, I dont know whatta F@#k he was thinking putting Rafa as a mid, and eventhough I’m a Chivas de Corazon Fan I don’t really understand why Maza was on the Pitch. We dont’t deserve to advance to the second round with this kind of Futbol. I suppoet the Team hasta la MUERTE but we need to do something really special if we want to go further in the tournament.

I have several comments. Some are positive, some are negative.

Positive:
1) attitude of winning and going for the win, either being 0-0, being 2-0, 2-1, and with 10 men. they get a clap there
2) Midfield can work and get the balls to attackers
3) attackesrs can create opportu nities
4) with 10 men, they still keep possession of the ball and dominate (yes, probably also portugal helped with this by waiting for a couterattack, but still, worth mentioning)

Negatives:
1) Lavolpe huge HUGE mistake of having Marquez in midfield kills solidity of defense: result 1 very good goal from Portugal (without taking away their merit, because it is there), caused by a clear defensive mistake
2) WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENS TO MARQUEZ WITH THAT HAND AND PENALTY
3) BRAVO!!!!!!! I cant believe that penalty
4) Bravo!!!!!! I cant believe missing in front of goalkeeper on your own
5) Referee: 2nd penalty not given to MExico

Conclusion, they have shown they want to win, that they do try, but they cant, because they cant finish the job

Portugal pulled the job, so good for them. They did play their match.

Mexico got lucky this time, I am already thinking that this is an elimination even if they are through…..no hope for the next match.

The Aftermath:

Overall, Rafa played one of the worst games of his life. His loss of possession & on 2 occassion led to goals. Then he complicates it with the most ridiculous hand ball in the box I have ever seen. He deserves to take the brunt of the criticism today because he made the costliest mistakes and he our captain and Mexico lost.

Lavolpe completely blew this game, because the boys were not focused and his gameplans for 2 games in a row have gone up in smoke. Lavolpe isn’t as smart as he thinks he is.

Luis Perez was awful other than earning the PK. His dive cost Mexico badly, he should have known he had 1 yellow already and known that PK’s are never awarded 2x and the refs would give another yellow for a dive.

Pavel Pardo is hurting the team something horrible. I counted at least 18x he lost the ball needlessly, either with no pressure or because he is not precise. So far anybody he is paired with looks terrible???

For the next game:
Perez is out of the game for sure. Ramon has yet to play any meaningful minutes and neither has Guardado, hopefully, as fans we get a chance to see them. Pineda and Pardo in my opinion need to be benched and make way.

After what we saw today, one can only hope it can’t get any worse, and they can only improve.

But then again…

Anyways, we have seen time and time again how Mexico struggles against defensive teams, so let’s hope they don’t get an early goal in their next match, defend solidly, and play the counterattack effectively against a team that we can assume will want to attack from the word go.

For the next round, Mexico actually has a better shot than we think. The problem is we have the same coach and same players.

Anything can happen. Expectations are extremely low, who knows, maybe we play crappy and finally win on PK’s. Wouldn’t that be ironic, as oppossed to losing in style every year.

By the way, Holland can win, and in their eyes, after what they saw today, they might be motivated to get the #1 seed to face us.

Right, that match with portugal is out of the way. having said the positive and negative, it is time to think of the next match.

The team is playing better, with nicer football, yet no finish. so the scenarios are:

1) Lavolpe plays defensive against Argentina? Too risky, Mexican defense is not bad, but it is far, very far from being bullet proof, and Argentina are dynamite when attacking.

2) Lavolpe plays a defensive midfield game, and bets for extra time? Positive: Mexican physical condition is extremely good (the best part of the squad if u ask me), Negative: still doesnt solve the issue

3) LAvolpe plays offensive. Here he loses.

so basically that sums it up. I like MExico, I support Mexico, but if I have to put my money somewhere, I would have to bet for Argentina.
