Missed opportunity
Well, so much for the nerve free game vs. Portugal. Missed opprtunities and erratic passing have left Mexico in a less than confortable position as they played Angola to everyone’s favorite: the scoreless draw. The Angolans executed their gameplan to perfection, and can now play Iran for a possible spot in the next round. Mexico now has to watch the scoreboard tomorrow and then plan accordingly.

That Portugal v Angola match seems very different now, doesn’t it? Chin up Mexico. You have PT to worry about next.

Does anyone know if Borgetti will be returning to play? I really fealt that he was missing out there today.

No worries, Mexico still has EL MARIACHI AND, Y EL TEQUILA!
Honestly, if they consider themselves men, they will pull this out. We have enough Captains to get this done.
On a side note: If I was going to pay 700 euros for a ticket to watch Mexico bite the big one, well, get me another bottle of tequila. Ouch!!!!!!!
My family just told me they paid 800 euros for one night in a hotel! My response to that is, are you out of your mind.
Anybody in Germany??? Fill us in…

Actually, I think Mexico has a better chance to look good against Portugal than Iran and Angola.
That should be a fun match to watch.
If you don’t believe me, remember what happened during the Confederations Cup:
The “low” game for el Tri was against a team with a “defend first” mentality: Greece (also a 0-0 tie), and Mexico did better against eh “attack first” teams: Argentina, Brazil and Germany.

Good points Rene: all is not lost. Lavolpe has a chance to redeem himself.
The frustrating part for a fan is to see Guille miss time after time and see a guy like Kikin get only 15 minutes or less. Bravo revert back to Bravo and miss a spectacularly easy chance.
Also, the simple passes and the speed with which Mexico plays was completely wiped out because guys were either nervous or did not perform well: was it nerves, was it pressure, who know, because you know Angola for 45 minutes did not attack all out, so no excuses. Just move on. No excuses though, they see this style in Concacaf all the time.
Lavolpe and the boys will pull it out, but it is funny how 0-0 feels like a complete loss, even when we are holding our own ticket to the 2nd rd.

On another note: I am completely gutted because tens of thousand of people made an effort to get to Germany, the stadium was rocking 95% Mexican and EL TRI had seen the AWD Hannover stadium just last year. The fans have not let them down, Mexico is one of the best if not the best represented team in Germany in terms of fans! Discounting the bandwagonner Brasil fans, Mexico is right up there.
GET ‘ER DONE BOYS!

Well, at least I was right about not seeing Guardado today. Reports are that he isn’t as good as we hoped he would be or at least not good enough to get playing time over the rest.
I’m as optimistic as anyone else, but the passing today was freakin horrible. One of the worst of the tournament yet. Pavel Pardo and Torrado need to really get it together.
Rene is totally right. How ironic is it that Mexico always plays their best games against the top teams, yet play like today against weaker teams. Here’s hoping that Mexico shakes the nerves and really come out strong against Portugal. If Iran beats of ties Portugal tomorrow, things are really going to be a mess in this group.
*sigh*
Having seen how Argentina kicked the crap against the supposed best defensive team to qualify out of Europe yesterday, I hope Mexico doesnt draw them in the next round.

Mexico’s dead meat….

I wouldn’t go that far. After all, we still control our destiny. A victory against Portugal will put us in the next round.

I’m not sure about the math but I think a tie will secure a spot in the next round.

I think it does. If Iran beats Portugal and then we tie with the Portuguese, even if Iran beats Angola, we would go through.
If Portugal wins, and then we tie with them, Angola can’t go through, even by beating Iran.
If Portugal and Iran tie, and then we tie with Portugal, no matter the result in the Iran vs Angola match, we would go through.
So, basically, we entirely control our destiny.

If Portugal wins and the we lose against them, we have to hope that Angola does not beat Iran by three goals or by two goals if they score more than three. i.e., Angola beating Iran 4-2 would put them in the second round because they scored one more goal than us against Iran.
Now, for each goal we score against Portugal in a losing effort, we force Angola to score another one to end with more scored goals than us. All this, again, in the scenario of Portugal winning tomorrow and on Wednesday and Angola beating Iran.

No Portugual has to win Iran tomorow so they will have 6 points and iran 0 angola 1 then iran has to beat or tie angola either way the most iran can get is 3 and angola 1 so mexico can win tie or loose they are in the next round so tomorow we gotta root for Portugual…

Even though we got a point I really feel like we lost so many missed opportunities I just hope this score doesn’t bite us in the ass on Wed.
I don’t want pessimistic but the way we played today Netherlands or Argentina would blow us out!!! hopefully they can pick it up it still believe en el Tri.
Vamos Mexico

Like Hugo Sanchez used to say, there are ties like this one that have the flavour of defeat. This is a match in which, yes, Mexico takes its 1 Point, but it really is a loss. I really have to say that Angola deserve their result, they played for it and got it well.
Hat off to Angola from me, and to the goalkeeper too.
Mexico take what they deserve…or better defined, Lavolpe takes the result he deserves for not making changes earlier. Same changes at minute 60 would have a different result than those changes at minute 75!

Bad for Mexico, and quite a shame to be defeated by the least favorite.. but Angola did played much better than EL Tri… hope next game is much better, at least for leaving the World Cup with some dignity… Either way we should be used to it: is the same story every four years…
