Mexico keeps on scheduling friendlies with shrimps

September 21st, 2007 | By: Kevin Zelaya | 23 Comments »

The latest FIFA ranking has Mexico ranked 13th in the world and Sanchez has made it his goal to win the 2008 Olympics, so why does he keeping scheduling friendlies against minnows like Guatemala, whom Mexico plays on October 17 in Los Angeles and an African team they´ll play on October 14 in Juarez! The name of the African opponent wasn´t released.

Ignoring the fact that scheduling friendlies takes a lot of preparation and that sometimes there´s a short list of available opponents, shouldn´t Mexico be playing against better competition? If Mexico can go on a USA tour (where it plays mostly Central and South American teams) why can´t it do what Argentina and Brasil do and go on a European tour and line up friendlies over there? If I recall correctly Mexico did have a host of friendlies in Europe in preparation for the 2006 FIFA World Cup against France and Holland.

We got the talent, the ambition and the coach to do great things yet we´re still training with the pre-schoolers when we should be practicing with the varsity. It´s time to step it up!

I think Mexico have played this tactic with the FIFA Rankings before. A decent showing at the Copa America (and CONCACAF Gold Cup) keeps them near the top ten. And then all the European sides beat each other in friendlies and qualifiers to keep El Tri a lively contender for a WC seeding. Another reason why wily Hugo won’t bring them to Europe until he absolutely has to - they would most probaby lose (and lose ranking pts) and the players wouldn’t gain all that much. They mostly play in the Euro leagues anyway or have experience of them) and the WC2010 takes place in a South African summer - or should that be winter ???

Can Mexico afford to play with European National Teams in Europe? How does that works? I am not sure if friendly games cost $$ because if that’s the case, then that could be a reason why Mexico can’t afford to play with European teams, but then on the contrary, Mexico does have enough $$ to pay for those games. In my whole life that I can remember, Mexico hardly had any friendly games with Germany, Italy, France, England and Spain either in the Americas or Europe. But now that Mexico is gaining a better reputation and prestige then the last fifteen years maybe there will be a European team that might come over to play a friendly game against Mexico, I hope.

I do know that France paid Argentina 1 Million not sure if in Dollars or Euros, but they paid them 1 Million just for a friendly game at France.

Hey Kevin I guess you are right after all about Mexico scheduling games with shrimps. I was reading this article about that check this out:

Wow! Well I´m glad to hear the Mexican Federation is getting good money from the Interliga and friendlies in the US then money is not an excuse for not playing games in Europe! I blame it on the federation for not having the balls to want to play big European teams! If Chile can play games in Europe then Mexico can too. Sanchez should practice what he preaches and play European teams.

Kevin, so you think Nigeria is a shrimp eh, I guess you will be shocked when Nigeria dominates and demolish Mexico on the 14th.

Read below and see if this is a shrimp squad and we are leaving a lot of players at home too.

Nigeria recall for Etuhu, Ishiaku
By Oluwashina Okeleji
BBC Sport, Lagos

Sunderland’s Dickson Etuhu has been called up to the Nigeria squad
Sunderland midfielder Dickson Etuhu has been recalled by Nigeria for their friendly against Mexico on 14 October.

Etuhu should finally make his Nigeria debut after missing the Nations Cup qualifier against Lesotho on 8 September due to travelling problems.

The 25-year-old midfielder was born in the northern Nigerian city of Kano but grew up in London.

Etuhu is yet to play for Nigeria despite being called up in the build-up to the 2002 World Cup.

He had been hoping that his performances in the English Premier League this season would earn him a call up to the Super Eagles squad.

Manasseh Ishiaku plays in Germany for MSV Duisburg

“I think I’m good enough to play for Nigeria, there are players who have not played in the Premiership and have played for the Super Eagles,” he told BBC Sport in August.

Germany-based Manasseh Ishiaku also has a chance to earn his first cap after he missed the friendly against Macedonia in Skopje on 22 August citing short notice.

Ishiaku says the invitation arrived barely forty-eight hours before the game, so he passed up the chance in order to concentrate on his club side, MSV Duisburg.

But Nigeria coach Berti Vogts included Ishiaku in his 19-man squad announced by the Nigerian FA in Abuja on Wednesday.

Notable absentees in the squad includes Italy based Stephen Makinwa [injury] and the Everton trio of Joseph Yobo [injury], Yakubu Ayegbeni and Victor Anichebe [who is placed on standby].

The match against Mexico will be played on 14 October in Mexico as part of the Super Eagles preparation for the 2008 African Cup of Nations in Ghana.

The Nigerian FA said the Super Eagles would play another friendly against Slovenia on November 17 ahead of the African Nations Cup in Ghana early next year.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Austin Ejide ( Bastia, France), Dele Aiyenugba (Bnei-Yehuda, Israel )

Defenders: Taye Taiwo (Marseille, France), Obinna Nwaneri (Sion, Switzerland), Danny Shittu (Watford, England), Rabiu Afolabi (Sochaux, France), Onyekachi Apam (Nice, France)

Midfielders: Dickson Etuhu (Sunderland, England), Mikel Jon Obi (Chelsea, England), Seyi Olofinjana (Wolverhampton Wanderers, England), Onyekachi Okonkwo (FC Zurich, Switzerland), Richard Eromoigbe (Levski Sofia, Bulgaria), Sani Kaita (Sparta Rotterdam, Holland)

Strikers: Ikechukwu Uche (Getafe, Spain), Obafemi Martins (Newcastle United, England), Manasseh Ishiaku (Duisburg, Germany), Nwankwo Kanu, John Utaka (both Portsmouth, England), Osaze Odemwingie (Lokomotiv Moscow, Russia),

Why do you guys have to give Mexico so much credit?…Playing shrimps?…Mexico could bearly get passed the first round in the Gold Cup 2007…and bearly beat Guadalupe 1-0…Costa Rica 1-0…and couldn’t get passed Honduras…which I remindu…played without David Suazo….who plays for Inter Milan…which Mexicans have a hard time getting to…I can’t wait until the qualifying matches for 2010…Cuba should have tied Mexico in the Gold Cup if the referee didn’t get in the way..and that’s how the second goal happened…I understand a team has to play with big opponents to grow…since it happens in a World Cup…but realize that this past Gold Cup…the teams were more even than ever….if Mexico was so bad ass they should score 3 ro 4 goals against Central American teams….but they are not…..and Nigeria…they are no shrimp….they’ve been as far as Mexico has gone in a World Cup….and they got lots of European players which Mexico lacks..and always will lack….honestly sometimes I feel the games are set up for Mexico to win…just becasue they are a team that can bring money to the FIFA…remember when Costa Rica and Paraguay beat Mexico in “El Azteca”…u make them seem so untouchable….look at the facts bitch….and if u were so bad as….in the Gold Cup every game Mexico won was by one goal…good thing my U.S…shut them up….and Guatemala…it will be a good game to see…because there’s always huge rivalry…but if u wanna brag about Mexico…then go ahead…u guys got nothing…ur economy sucks..ur country sucks…uguys can’t even speak spanish correctly..and if u gusy were so bad ass u would beat Brazil, Germany, and France…and if ur country was sooo bad ass…10% of ur population wouldnt be here in the U.S.

Thanks Hugo, and where is your country is currently standing, because with your spanish name, you don’t sound any American at all. Please don’t come and talks about Guatemala being a strong team. What Guatemalan player is currently playing abroad? Guatemala is a wimpy team that hos no structure, and definetly I am not looking for that lame ass game. I defenitely upset for scheduling a game against Guatemala, damned FEMEFUT, they should had either England, Germany, Italy, or Swizerland. To correct you, first of all Mexico have always dominated some of the Central Americans in the exception to Costa Rica and Honduras, but the rest sucks. As for Gold CUp 2007, remember were barely got into a new transformation of Coach, players getting to know each other, and a different style of play compared to the former coach. But now it’s no excuse Mexico is now used to the 4-4-2 formation and Neri, Guardado, Vela, Dos Santos, Memo Ochoa, and the rest of the players already know each other a lot more. In the Gold Cup Mexico didn’t had the luxury as the US, Cuba and Central American had training for over five to six months while Mexico didn’t even had a Coach yet until weeks before Copa Oro. Yes Mexico didn’t play all that good at the Copa Oro, but they were ready to play Copa America. Now don’t come in here and tell me that in Copa America they were ready because the players knew each other before the tournament, well same thing with the US, Cuba, and Central America at Copa Oro. No Mexico beat Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, etc. You think that Guatemala is going to be a threat!!! Please give me a break, Central America is never a threat for Mexico, I think Mexico is not even thinking about Central America right now. At this level we are having quality players such as Andres Guardado, Giovanni Dos Santos, Carlos Vela, Guillermo Ochoa, Carlos Salcido, Ricardo Orsorio, Rafael Marguez, El Pato Araujo, and the rest of the Sub-20. Mexico will be another stronger favorite candidate to win the World Cup for the 2010.

But to correct you, Hugo, Mexico has beat Belgium, Brazil, Argentina, Holland, Austria, and Nigeria. In the last 9 nine or ten games with Brazil, Mexico has be beat Brazil six times and tied two and lost two, and you’re saying that Mexico has been able to beat them? Get your facts straight.

mexico will win 4-2, dos santos will provide great passes and mexico will dominate the posseesion of the ball and make the africans run all game.
nigeria is a great squad but without there allstars they will not create the upset many of you are looking for.
i see guardado, cacho, torrado, and finally dos santos scoring in this match.
watch ochoa as he will make some inspiring saves and show why he probobly one of the best 25 keepers in the world.

I like Hugo’s approach. Let an unfinished product that is continually adding new style and firepower gel together as much as possible before going across the pond to the big dogs. You don’t send a promising young boxer in the ring against a champ in his 7,8,10 fight. I’m sure he’ll know when they’re ready and I think that it all starts with the youngsters Vela, Giovanni. They are the ones to take Mexico to the next level. They are almost ready, ALMOST!! We will be ready for the Olympics and most certaintly be peaking come World Cup time!

Jajaja..It’s very naive to think Mexico has a supremacy over Central American teams. Quit living in the past. If Mexico keeps going up against Central American teams with that attitude, they willl keep loosing more and more games. It is fair to say that fútbol in the region has grown and there are no more easy matches between these rivalries. Like it or not, Guatemala and Centro América have grown and World Cup Qualyfying for México will never be like it used to. They will ahve to contend every game and every opponent. You can make up any excuse you want but the simple fact is that they lost. You can’t argue with that!!!!

Actually I CAN argue. You won against kids!!!. Wow what a man, and you have to think about it really. Few veterans were there! Oh say about 4!! If Mexico had their Copa America team would you realize that Guatemala has no chance. Statistics shows it! You guys basically played the Sub-23 team! Lol now I know why when Guatemala wins any inferior team they think they can beat anyone! HAHAHA Once Guatemala beats some European teams I’ll give them respect..but for now..they’re still inferior.

Sub-23, yep, well, I can argue the same for Guatemala, most were new kids on the block. El Bolillo Gómez has not called many of the better players from last qualifier. So…..whats your excuse now????? Guate also had a young team. The only difference was they weren’t boasting about wining a game that hadn’t been played yet. You Mexicans sometimes think you are the best…no humility!!!! Ávila, the kid whho scored 2 goals on you Mexicans was only 21yrs old. That was his debut game with La Seleccion!!! PREPOTENTES!!!!!!

Do your research! From Guatemala, Dwight Pezzarozi, Chalo Romero, Guillermo “El Pando” Ramirez and many of other excellent Guatemalan players were missing. El Bolillo Gómez is trying to find new talent and as the México Guatemala game proved, it shows he is getting some success. There is a fútbol world outside of México. Face it, CONCACAF is growing. You should be happy about that. That way your beloved México doesn’t have to go play in Europe to loose. Jajaja…And why do you talk so highly about Europe when we have great soccer here in the Américas (Conmenbol y Concacaf) by the way, read this:

Ante las malintencionadas preguntas de la prensa mexicana que interrogó a Gómez sobre si todos le jugarían a México “fuerte” en la eliminatoria, insinuando que Guatemala había pateado, el “Bolillo” les respondió que, “Yo he enfrentado a México con Colombia, Ecuador y Guatemala y nunca vi que los sudamericanos se quejaran, ni que los mexicanos dejaran de meter duro.
http://www.guatefutbol.com/content/view/1153/64/

http://www.jornada.unam.mx/2007/10/17/index.php?section=deportes&article=a21n1dep

“Hubo declaraciones en México del ‘Tuca’ Ferreti (Técnico de Pumas) de que ellos iban a jugar contra ‘Guatepeor’, y se dieron cuenta de que no fue así”.

well, if you ask me…..it doesnt really change anything..even when Guatemala came out with a victory, it doesn’t change the fact that Mexico is better. I do not go this conclusion because I just say so, they just wanted to beat mexico anyway possible…but if you see the results for other matches against other country, Guatemala looses or has hard times.
They say(Roberto Medina) that guatema didnt have all the players or missing, but they played against 20 something yr old guys. Probably for guatemala this a big win(after yrs), but for mexico is just a small loss.

Vick. I agree with you at the moment that one win does not make one team better than the other. Programs usually shift dramatically for national teams from one world cup cycle to the other and working with the younger Sub-23 and Sub-21 teams usually strengthen the teams when these kids get older. My point is that these processes have become more stronger in a lot of CONCACAF countries making their teams stronger. Take the 1980’s. México was the only powerhouse in CONCACAF. Now its not so. Many agrgue that the US has taken that role consistantly winning matches over México. Central American teams do not yet have supremacy over México but they now can go into México and win more often. What this means for México is that they can’t take any match for granted as they used to. They are going to have to be more humble and treat avery match as if it were Brasil they were playing. CONCACAF is more coompentative and no longer will México have an easy road to the World Cup. Relax a bit guys, this is good for all of CONCACAF, including México.
