Mexico Doesn’t Need the US to Do Well
Interesting blog entry from a typical American who hates Mexico. The point he makes is that the US fans should root for Mexico to do well in the World Cup because that benefits CONCACAF and ultimately the United States. He also suggests that Mexican fans should pull for the US this summer. I say this is nonsense.
Mexico is proven on the international stage. Long before the United States even dreamt of playing in the World Cup, we were there battling it out with the top countries in the world. We don’t need to US to do well to improve our image in international football. We are an established power.
Everyone knows that our region is weak compared to others, even with the US improving. Everyone also knows that Mexico is the top team in CONCACAF. We always have been and I think we always will be despite all those weak calls for respect from the US fans.
Personally I won’t be rooting for or against the US this summer. I could care less what they do. They are insignificant to me. Nothing more than little bugs that occasionally try to bite. My focus is on supporting El Tri – the best team in CONCACAF!

You are VERY wrong on many fronts, and therefore need to be corrected.
First of all, success of one member country does benefit all of the nations in a region, evidenced by the fact that the after World Cup 2006, CONCACAF was awarded an extra .5 spot for 2006 based on the collective successes of Mexico, USA and Costa Rica in Korea/Japan. More spots in the World Cup for a region doesn’t just mean more representation, it means prestige and respect for that region. How can it NOT be beneficial to ALL regional member countries, including Mexico, when that happens?
I agree that our region is still weaker than some other regions, and that after the US, Mexico, and Costa Rica, the quality of play in the region falls considerably.
However, that Mexico is the top team in CONCACAF? Are you high?
Anyone who knows anything about the CONCACAF knows that the USA are now the kings of the region. The USA has proven that in every manner imaginable. Note:
- In their last ten meetings, dating all the way back to November 2000, the US owns a record of 7 wins, one tie, and only 2 losses against Mexico, including the victory in Korea/Japan (2-0) in 2002 that eliminated Mexico from the World Cup. In short, WE OWN THEM.
- We each won one of the matches we played against each other last year, but the USA HAD A BETTER GOAL DIFFERENTIAL, as Mexico only won its match 2-1 while the USA won 2-0.
- The USA WON THE GOLD CUP LAST YEAR, while Mexico was knocked out in the early stages. In case I need to remind you, the Gold Cup is the regional CHAMPIONSHIP of the CONCACAF. Winning this alone, arguably proves the US is the better team.
- IN QUALIFYING FOR GERMANY 2006, THE USA WON THE GROUP. MEXICO CAME IN SECOND.
- In frendies played so far in 2006, MEXICO HAS ALREADY LOST to Korea, while the USA IS UNDEFEATED, including a victory over Japan, which is a higher ranked team than Korea. The USA has done all of this WITHOUT the European-based American players, who will probably represent 7 or 8 players on the starting roster in Germany 2006. (I know that most Mexican players play professionally in Mexico, so I can only assume that most of their starters HAVE been playing up to this point.)
- Both the USA and Mexico played friendlies against Norway in January 2006. Mexico won 2-1 only by virtue of a very late goal, while the USA hammered Norway to the tune of 5-0.
You must be following a different Mexico than I am, because the Mexican team I know of has proven itself of late to be far INFERIOR TO THE UNITED STATES.
Even in the current FIFA world rankings, the two are TIED with Spain for 6th place. However, I predict that based on recent performances, the USA WILL PASS MEXICO in the new rankings that will be released on March 15.
If that happens, Mexico may never catch us.

Thank you for confirming my final point that Mexico does not feel it needs the USA. Apparently all they feel they need is a few more Argentinian or Brazilian born players.
Best wishes.

I’m Mexican, and I am always defending the US with South Americans that know nothing about them. They have grown, but are still not king of the hill, and I’ll tell you why: having a better recent head-to-head record than Mexico doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re absolutely better than them. If that were the case, we could argue that Mexico is better than Brazil, and I’m sure most people will not agree with that statement. If you had to pick a team from CONCACAF to beat a world class team it wouldn’t be the U.S., it would be Mexico on current form.

I agree Luis! it’s seems like people here are just wanting to get respect for the US.
I’m Mex-American, I cheer for both teams, when they play each other I have to go with roots, so I go for Mex.
I’d be way more worried on the group that US is in, cause in my opinion sams boys are the biggest underdog.
You should all pay more attention on who you’re playing in the WC and not on Mex.
