Mexico arrive in Germany
The National team has landed in Frankfurt and are now on their way to Gottingen, a quaint German town between Hanover and Cologne. They were met by their team bus, which has the slogan “pasión azteca que cubre el mundo.” Perhaps they got aztec passion confused with Sherwin Williams, who, as we all know, covers the earth as well.
With players, coaches, executives, and cling-ons, the total number that makes up the Mexican Delegation adds up to 300. Apprently, earlier in the week, there was an issue because there was only one suite reserved: for Ricardo La Volpe. Alberto de la Torre did not have a suite but a regular room. The horror!! Let’s hope they go this all squared away.
Tomorrow, Mexico play the Gottingen all-stars. It will be televised in the US on Telemundo at noon CST.

Klingons? Is there a trekkie convention in Gottingen? That would explain the number of people in the Mexican delegation.

They got a hero’s welcome

Mmmh, I’m not too sure about that slogan. I heard the Iranian bus had to change it because it referred to themselves as Persian, when only like 60% of the population in Iran is persian, so the rest of the people were complaining. Well, does anybody know what percentage of the Mexican population has “Aztec passion”? I don’t know, but where I come from the Aztecs never set foot.
I’ve never been so sure about associating the whole coutry with an empire that was only there 100 years before the Spanish conquered them. Anyways, I guess everybody around the world generally thinks of Mexico when they hear the word “Aztec”, but then again, they generally think they used to live in a place somewhere in South America…

Gus,
I don’t find in inappropriate at all. There are certain icons that belong and are embraced by the entire country. The Aztecs were the last great empire of Mesoamerica, and we could not refer ourselves as Mayan, since Guatemala was also part of the Mayan empire. Plus, even the name of the country is derived of the real name of that indigenous group (Mexicas), so I see nothing innapproriate in the use.
Think about it this way: Peruvians are usually refer to as Incas, Americans as Cowboys, Argentinians as Pamperos, Paraguayans as Guaranis, etc. etc. Does that mean everyone is represented in that group? No, but it is probably the most recognizable symbol of their country. There is nothing wrong with that.
And for the record, the empire lasted almost 300 years. They were dominant for about 2 centuries though (Teotihuacan was founded in 1325).

Gus,
So, should we just refer to you as English

Ok guy, you are obviously 100% about it. I just wanted to know what you thought.
I said I wasn’t too sure, I didn’t say I didn’t approve, that it was inappropiate, or that I didn’t like it. My point was, I AM MEXICAN, but have never felt “Aztec passion”. Another thing, I’ve never been to Mexico City, but I’m no less Mexican because of that, and I support the National team 200%.
Anyways, I thought it might be interesting to compare it to the case with Iran, who actually DID change their slogan.

louie, here are some of my suggestions. I guess the one on the bus is a cultural one, how about a musical one (similar to associating Brazil with Samba): “Let the World Cup Fiesta move this time to the sound of Banda, Mariachi and Rancheras”
Of course a food one would also be easily recognizable, but I’m not sure how to include tamales, refried beans, chiles and tortillas to a good sounding slogan.
Maybe a geographical one. “From mountains and valleys, deserts and jungles, the nation’s passion will make dreams reality”
Rene, I believe you have a good point, it’s not just about us Mexicans identifying ourselves, it’s also about other people seeing the bus identfying us with it. So it does make sense to use a well known icon, albeit not 100% applicable, yet it gets the job done.
Seriously, if anybody was offended, I apologize, but I did want to have a talk about what you think might be a good slogan, keeping in the sprit of the games.

Another thing to consider:
We have an Aztec icon as the emblem/coat of arms in our FLAG, and our Country is named after the indigenous group that comprised the Aztec empire. Also, 60% of all mestizos in Mexico have some sort of Mexica/Aztec blood in them. So I believe the Aztec word is the one that best represents us or the one that serves as the most logical common denominator.

Gus you’re totally right I’m ofended that the slogan didn’t say “Pasion ATLANTISTA que cubre todo el mundo” lol!!! no just kidding I actually thought that it was very cool the welcome El Tri got from germans.
This is the game where Chiquis should play the 90 min because other than that he should be thinking on ways on how to entretain himself in the bench for the whole tournament.Just 7 days before we play Iran can’t wait!!!
Vamos Mexico

So does anybody know anything about this University team? Is it an amateur team, a student team, or an actual professional team like UNAM or UANL? Also, is there a limit of interchanges available (say 6) like in the other friendlies?
