Medina takes Borgetti’s spot.

Bolton Wanderers denied Jared Borgetti’s request to travel to Chicago and join Mexico for their friendly vs. Paraguay on March 29.

Bolton were well within their right to deny Borgetti’s request as the 29th is not a “fecha fifa.” he took the news in stride and has asked to play in Bolton’s reserves matches so that he can get some game action before the cup. He played on the reserves last week and scored 1 goal in 50 minutes of action.

I can’t faul Bolton for not allowing him to travel. But I can fualt them for not playing Jared more. He does not fit their system very well, and I am curious why they signed him in the first place. Even though this season will probably be deemed a failure for Jared, his fitness has improved tremendously, he has added more muscle to his frame, and will be highly motivated to prove himself at the world cup. I wonder if Jared would enjoy playing England if the opportunity arose.

Hi John:

I went to Bolton’s webpage and found a stat on Borguetti:

It’s not updated but Jared Borguetti on his first 9 games as a starter plus 15 more games as a sub has scored 6 goals.

I found that pretty amazing, considering how he must feel as a benchwarmer.

I think, as you said, he should be playing as a starter in Bolton, specially with the world cup coming up.

What do you think of Jared? and what do you tink he should do in the situation he’s in?

Have a nice day.

I feel bad for Jared because I am sure he genuinely thought he would get a good chance to play. Like most Mexicans, I started to follow Bolton much closer because of Jared. 2 things jump out at me most:
1. Big Sam is extremely conservative, and would rather sit on a 1-0 lead than go get a second goal. Which means that Jared would stay on the bench if he did not start. This has bitten Bolton more than a few times as teams have scored late equalizers.
The Second thing is Big Sam plays with forwards, not strikers, so Jared has to do a lot more than just score goals. He is just not suited for that style of game. He has been getting chances off the bench lately, so hopefully he can find some rythm before he joins the team in May.
