Great Mexican Week

April 23rd, 2006 | By: Luis Carlos | 7 Comments »

We’ve been talking a lot about Borgettis goal, but that wasn’t it for this ending week full of soccer. Sure Jared’s second goal on the Premier League was the event, because he also contributed in 2 of the other 3 scores in the 4-1 against Charleton. I think it would be nice to enlist the events on this week in no particular order, so we can discuss if in fact this was a great week in Soccer.

1. Borgetti’s second goal on the premier league. He has started the last 2 games, and with 3 games left and no chance of Bolton going anywhere he probably will be a starter in the final games.

2. Osasuna last minute goal. Mexican Aguirre, coach of Osasuna is getting closer to a Champions League apearance every day. The win against Mallorca puts them with 62 points, 2 away from Valencia and 1 from Real Madrid. The Mexican coach’s job in Pamplona was to defend Osasona from de demotion, and look where he has them now. With an incoming visit from Real Madrid next week whis could be there chance to prove they are UCL material and that they have a hell of a coach.

3. Antonio De Nigris first goal in Brazil. This was probably the last spoken event, but still a very important one. The former Villarreal, Polideportivo Ejido, Once Caldas de Manizales (some of the foreign teams in wich he has played), is the first mexican to play in Brazil, and now the first one to score. His goal came in the 11th minute, he was wearing number 10, who was once worn by “PELÉ”. So in his 3rd game with “Santos”, first with #10, Toño De Nigris is a starter, and someone who we will be hearing a lot from Brazil.

4. Two teams in Libertadores. A lor of people don’t think that the Mexican League is an important one, or that mexican players are good. It’s a shame that sometimes we don’t give the importance we should to Liberatadores, but 2 of the 3 teams that are in the tournament did, and now they are in the next round. Tigres and Chivas, without seleccionados, but with Gaitan, Chamagol, Bofo, Medina and some reinforcements will be playing for a spot in the cuarter finals next week. Go Tigres and Chivas!!

5. FIFA Rankings. This is a subject a lot of people hate talking about, but we’re number 6 again. And as much as I try to convince people of how this rankings are the best, USA being in number 4 doesn’t help a lot. What do you think about this rankings??

6. More subjects. Franco a starter, Huiqui getting better, Marquez back at a 100%, the Acapulco fase over and well. Barcelona and Villareal in Semis next week. I guess this week was great, but next week will be better. Did I miss something? Make your comments.

I hate to say it, but go Chivas! They look strong enough to make it to the final, and maybe this time the South American refs will be fair enough to let a Mexican club win…then again, probably not.

Osasuna qualifying for the Champions would be nothing short of a miracle for that club. What a job of coaching!

The really interesting story is Antonio De Nigris. Gotta admire this guys heart and tenacity to give it another go abroad. He might work his way back to the national team as the heir to Borgetti. Good for him.

Well it is too bad how his carrer went. I mean he was considered one of the best players in his first years, then suddenly something happen and his level of play went from great to average.

Hope he finds his “segundo aire” in Brazil.

I remember when de Nigris scored against Jamaica in 2001, he was annointed as the next Hugo. He obviously isn’t that, but it’s good to see him have early success in Brazil

If he puts it together in Brazil that would be a huge boost for him and for the national team someday. In qualifying for the world cup in 2002 he looked like the real deal.

You never know when a striker is going to wake up. Who can forget Cardozo coming out of nowhere to become a legend in Mexico.

Actually in Southafrica (2010) he would be a year younger than Borgetti in this world cup.
