Gameday 2

June 16th, 2006 | By: John | 36 Comments »

Mexico takes on Angola today, and with a victory and a Portugal non defeat, the conjunto azteca will stamp their passports for the 2nd round.

Mexico has not lost a 2nd game in the world cup since 1978, and since 1986, they have two wins (Ireland-94, Ecuador-02) and 2 draws (Paraguay-86, Belgium-98).

The expected line up today:
Sanchez, Mendez, Osorio, Marquez, Salcido, Pineda, Zinha, Pardo, Bravo, Franco, Fonseca.

Angola presents a different test than the Iranians did, and they have gone on record in saying they want to push forward for a result. They gave Portugal trouble, and I expect them to give Mexico trouble.

If Mexico is to win again, they have to be disciplined, and not fall into the speed trap. I think they won’t fall in, and I think they win — barely — 1-0.

The game is on at 2:00 PM CDT

Out of the 2, it seems Netherlands is a bit more vulnerable after 2 matches.

Argentina has just too many offensive weapons. The weird thing is Mexico usually has a harder time handling European teams.

Again, there are pros and cons to whomever they play (again, if they win their match today).

Halftime update: for those of you few unfortunate people at work.

Mexico Positives:
—————–
-score is 0-0

-Marquez is our hero

-Guille had a nice effort but missed

-Torrado has fight today, winning tons of balls, doing better work today

-Bravo looks dangerous

-can’t play worse

Mexico Negatives:
—————–
-the midfield is falling apart on offense over and over again

-Pardo, Sinha, Pineda, are playing below snuff and win balls but lose them as quickly

-Sinha looks out of synch again, has given away lots of easy ball at crucial moments and what is worse is they are clearly looking for him to pull the strings and make a play

-Guille looks like he has been looking, nervous, falling, fighting for balls, but gives them away once he wins them

-way too many corner kicks and dangerous throw-ins

-Borgetti is missed b/c he pulls 2-3 guys and other guys run off of him better than they do Guille

OVERALL:
——-
-looks for subs from Lavolpe and a serious scolding and adjustment to get things opened up

-Hopefully Guardado, Cabrito and Kikin come in the game

-the offense needs to keep possession longer especially in the top 1/3.

Well…

Same things that have been hard for Mexico to overcome in the past haunts them again:

- Hard time scoring against a team that dedicates a lot of the time to defend.

- Hard time creating scoring opportunities against a team that can keep the same pace as Mexico

- On and off offense.

Alright here goes:

Overall:
——-
-we can still advance, because we control our destiny

-some of the starters did not respond (Sinha, Pardo, Pineda, Franco, and Bravo)

-Lavolpe’s moves were countered by Angola’s heart

-The big gamble was starting Sinha instead of Fonseca and it backfired because Fonseca looked real dangerous and showed heart

-Not all is lost, we played horrible the first half and just a little better the second, everybody can take a little blame

Positives:
———
-Torrado redeemed himself, was all over, winning everything

-Marquez

-Good heart the last 15 minutes but not enough, I think the team responded to Kikin Fonseca

Negatives:
-take your pick, but the big overall theme is lack of precision in the attacking 3rd.

My personal opinion is the strategy Lavolpe had, well it backfired because his players did not respond such as Pardo, Pineda, Sinha and Franco. Terrible touch and lack of precision. Heart was not enough today. The subs helped but Angola had already gained enough confidence, and frustrated the Mexicans to the point where Angola was bunkered down and the goaly was on fire.

Lavolpe should have fone for the kill with all his guns early on in my opinion, why wiat for Fonseca to save you in 15 minutes. It almost worked anyway.

comments:

1) Angola goalkeeper: brilliant

2) Mexican midfield: crap

3) Lavolpe: correct changes, but too too too late

4) Bravo: 1 goal missed.

5) Franco: substandard

6) Arellano: substandard

7) Marquez: OK, good shot

8) Kikin: good (too late to come in

9) Torrado: send him on holiday to the moon, he is a wanker

10) Angola: excellent tactical play.

Overall, total disappointment from Mexico. What are they waiting for? That team can play brilliant football. It is the same as England with T&T, what are they waiting to display what they have. Unbelievable.

On a scale from 1-10 (10 being the best)

Angola 9
Mexico 5

A few more things:
——————

-Borgetti is missed badly, you have to think he would have either headed home a goal or pulled a few marks on set pieces. In a sense, we rely on Borgetti more than people think.

-Guille Franco for some reason has a free pass to start every game without merit. The guys has been given countless chances and wastes easy finishes and or his touch is lousy, he has a big heart but he bungles it up over and over again.

-Kikin needs to start and play the FULL 90 minutes. HE EARNED IT.

-Salcido needs to push up more because he was dangerous in attack and maybe pull Pineda out and put Castro in. We’ve seen enough of Pineda to last a lifetime, zero assists, zero goals, zero dangerous runs, his positive attitude is not enough, we need production at this point.

-Who says Pardo can’t come out??? I love the guy but it’s almost reached Zidane status, turning back the clock is not an option unfortunately.

OVERALL:
———
-We can qualify easily, but what is the point if they play like that, Argentina or Holland would wax us.

-If they pull out a victory over Portugal it would send a message that we are still Mexico.

Jack: great points. Only disagreement is on Torrado. He played much better today but Pardo and him do not work well together.

To your point which is similar to my point, why play 2 defensive midfielders? Go for the kill, England bungled it up as well but got saved by their version of our Brogetti: Crouch.

Pardo should have come out, and placed Luis Perez up top closer to the forwards and started Kikin, Franco and Bravo and Morales and still maintained enough subs (Arellano, Castro, Guardado etc…)

Sometimes things backfire for a reason, let’s hope we learn from this and move on.

Awfully disappointed. Why Lavolpe wait so long to bring in Kikin. His presence was noticed immediately but was not given enough time. He should definitely start next game.

Payam…funny, but you forgot to mention the way we smacked Iran 3-1. Even though this was a disappoitment Mexico did not lose and still earned a point. All is not lost.

Now is not the time to get all negative, our boys need us!

LOL! I actually disagree on Payam too because he is from Team Melli’s corner! They have heart.

Not to sound like broken record but we must all be geniuses because the media is echoing every single thing we said.

But of course Lavolpe is going to accuse them of being…

No matter, let’s qualify and point fingers later.

What a fiasco! Everyone was disappointing. Even Rafa got contaminated at the end. The did not open up the field. There were plenty of chances to go to the sides, but they kept going (attempting to go) through the middle.
Pardo has lost his touch… every free kick and every corner are a waste.
Today was the perfect scenario for someone like Guardado. What was Lavolpe thinking that he did not use him?
The good thing is: In the last 5 World Cups we have had a really bad game such as today’s: in 86 against Paraguay; 94 against Norway; 98… well it was the exeption; 02 against the USA. I hope (I pray) we had used our only chance to play badly. From now on, playing like this means good bye.

Enrique:

I disagree. In a match where you are tied and you know one goal will either get you in or do you in, you don’t let the more offensive oriented rookie go to the field, specially on the flanks, were speed usually means a chance to win a corner or set a header.

Had Mexico won, we would have had the opportunity to see Guardado against Portugal and rest some players. Now we can’t afford to have that luxury.

Better get used to seeing Guardado on the Bench, because at this point I don’t think we will see him play at all during this WC.

I would have used Ramoncito sooner (in fact, I thought he was starting), but it appears Lavolpe has intended him and Arellano to be the “super subs” that get on the field when teams are tired and slowing down to use their speed to score the decisive goal.

Problem is, if you let them into the match too late, they won’t have enough time to make things happen.

Yes, Mexico had an unlucky loss, but Iran - Angola hasn’t been played yet. If you think Iran will become the 1st team of the world, you are sadly mistaken :(. I hope Angola hammers Iran 2-0, :D!
