Franco nets winner, solidifies spot / more Mexico-Ghana
Only 11 minutes after coming on as a sub, Guillermo Franco scored the only goal of the match as Mexico defeated Ghana 1-0 in Frisco, Texas.
The naturalized Argentine’s goal more than likely sealed a roster spot, but also a starter’s slot as well. It’s in all the Mexican papers, so it must be true! The second half of last night’s game was shaped by the subs that Ricardo Lavolpe brought in. El Negro Sandoval, a late call-up for the injured sinha, made an impact, and was given the assist on Franco’s goal.
Andres Guardado is making a serious case to be considered for the final 23. Despite his youth (he’s 19), he displays a level of maturity and understanding of a 10 year veteran. He served up a great center pass to Omar Bravo early in the 2nd half, which Omar nearly headed in. Again, I am amazed by the positioning Bravo gets for headers considering how small he is. I do think, however, that with the emergence of Franco, Omar might be the odd man out. Gringo Castro made the most of his opportunity on the right flank, and even the Maza, who has been the target of endless criticism (and not just by me), played well against the extremely strong Ghanan forwards. Luis Angel Landin earned his first cap, but was not on the field enough to make any real contributions.
But the night belonged to Franco. He displayed his array of skills with an easy aplomb. He got excellent position on centering passes, played set-up man for Lucho Perez, and got wonderful elevation on the header that ended up in the back of the net. As for the rest of the boys on the bubble, Guardado and Castro helped themselves the most, whereas Mario Perez didn’t do anything for me to forget Jimmy Lozano. Diego Martinze… well, let’s just say he played in a new position. I am sure he’d like to forget last night. The bubble players will have their chance to impress again in Chicago vs. Paraguay on March 29.

I really liked Guardados confidence out on the field, he’s a natural, Franco sparked a Mexican team that was lacking ideas on the field, a few mis-passes to Borgetti was the only interesting of the first half, I don’t know what Lavolpe is doing, Almost everyone in the world had their starters for the WC except us.
I don’t think that helps when the cup starts, they need to have all the guys that are going to participate so they can get used to playing with each other, I still haven’t seen a team with Marquez, Salcido, Masa, Pardo, Morales, Borgetti, and Franco all playing at the same time, I think those are the best players Mexico has to offer, and they should get to play together.

Wasn’t all that impressed with what I saw from the team against Ghana.
