Eto’o makes world cup team

May 18th, 2006 | By: John | 6 Comments »

Samuel Eto’o will indeed be in Germany as part of a world cup team.

He has joined the team at Televisa, who have signed the Barcelona and Cameroon striker as a commentator. Eto’o speaks impeccable Spanish, and will be a valued addition to the talking heads at Televisa. I only wish I could get Televisa coverage in Austin, because from what I have heard from Eto’o, he will bring a refeshing and honest approach to his comments. Perhaps Galavision will give us a glimpse of Eto’o’s more pointed comments.

Wow…. Televisa sure has come a long way to close the gap with TV Azteca in terms of coverage.

Unfortunately, Valdano + Menotti will trump whomever they bring over there, unless Televisa can get Cruyff to comment.

So do these Televisa connections mean that Eto’o might end up playing for Club América one day, like his countryman Omam Biyik did? …

Would be interesting but I’m still not sure if I’d like to see that…

Well, America is usually the only team in Mexico that hires former World Cup veterans in Mexico. A short list of people who played in America after playing in a world cup include:

Dirceu Guimaraes
Carlos Reynoso
Francoise Omam Biyik
Leo Rodriguez
Piojo Lopez
Oscar Ruggeri

and they also had to former world cup coaches: Leo Beenhakker and Alfio Basile

So it would not surprise me one bit.

How can we forget that great Atlante signing of Gregorz Lato after 1982. If I remember right, he was old and bald, but he did enjoy decent success. I wonder if he ever chabged allegiances from kielbasa to chorizo.

Don’t forget Eusebio, Monterrey signed him, although he was 40 years old… the last team he ever played.
