Dissatisfied with performance, Borgetti hungry to prove himself
It appears that the teachings of Big Sam Allardyce are rubbing off on Jared Borgetti. Mexico’s all time leading scorer, and current Bolton Wanderers striker understands he needs to help his team defensively if they are to succeed.
The knock on Borgetti since he has been at Bolton is that he is not willing to come back on defense — just poach for goals; and his playing time has been reduced to spot duty off the bench. In the post-game press conference last week, Borgetti was unhappy with his performance, especially not falling back on defense enough to help his team recover possession. He felt he played better in the second half, and enjoyed teaming with Guille Franco.
He is keen to pair up with his European-based teammate (who scored for Villareal over the weekend), and both want to be called up for the March 29 friendly vs. Paraguay at Soldier Field. Since this is not an official FIFA date, Borgetti will learn where he stands with Bolton if he is not only released for this game, but also for the Mexico training camp, which begins in mid-April. If he attends both, my guess is his stint at Bolton will come to an end. Since Bolton got bounced by Marseille in the UEFA, the last trophy they can win is the FA Cup. The March 15 replay vs. West Ham will go a long way to deciding if Jared joins Mexico in April, or in May. It is a shame, really. Borgetti is a too good a striker to be relegated to bench duty. He has scored important goals when given the opportunity. Ironically, it looks like it will be Mexico, not Bolton who will reap the benefit of Big Sam’s teachings.
