Could the Cabrito be back?

March 3rd, 2006 | By: John | No Comments »

Ricardo Lavolpe reached out to Jesus “Cabrito” Arellano, the venerable Monterrey midfielder, and veteran of 2 world cup campaigns. The two have been at odds since Arellano proclaimed that Mexico does not need to fill the ranks with naturalized players. With the recent injury to Sinha, and Lavolpe’s admission that the attacking midfield position is where Mexico is thinnest, it only makes sense that Lavolpe looks to Arellano to fill in. Let’s see whose ego caves first.

The Cabrito, as you may remember, was used brilliantly by Manuel Lapuente in France ‘98 as a second half substitute. His speed gave the Mexican
attack a dimension rarely seen by me or any other fan of the tri. The dude could flat run! I still can see the moves he put on Lothar Matthaus in Montpelier. Unfortunately, the woodwork was cruel to the Cabrito…. He ultimately earned a legacy of his hard-luck finishing as much as being an electrifying sub.

Arellano is recovering from a knee injury, but should be ready to play for his club this weekend. He is one of Mexico’s top players, and his experience and guile would be a welcome addition to the team. If he does go to Germany, let’s hope he can finally finish.

[...] Yellow card to Mexico fans. If your team’s midfield is in such sad shape that you need to bring back an aging Cabrito then this might not be a pleasant World Cup experience for you. [...]
