Bravo’s Brace beats Paraguay, but was it enough to put him on the Plane?

March 30th, 2006 | By: John | 4 Comments »

Chivas striker Omar Bravo did his best to give Ricardo Lavolpe a headache by scoring two goals in Mexico’s sloppy 2-0 defeat over the Paraguayans. The first half was forgettable, but Mexico played better in the 2nd half. Claudio Suarez took command of the back line when Mexico switched to a 4-4-2. As far as Paraguay, does their federation not have enough money to include the red stripes on the back of the shirt? My early nominee for ugliest uniform at the cup. The match served as a final audition for a few players, including Bravo. But if you believe some of the Mexican press, Lavolpe already had his mind made up on the final roster before this match even took place.

Nevertheless, let’s examine the bubble players from last night. Who needs to brush up on their German, and who will be brushing up on their golf game.

Dulio Davino – He was responsible for Paraguay’s goal, and just hasn’t looked sharp all year long. It’s time for him to work on his short game.

Claudio Suarez – For such an old geezer (he’s 74) he had the back line organized extremely well in the second half. He’s going to Germany. He may not play much, but will definitely be an influence not only on the younger players, but also on the coaching staff. Maybe he can take Maza’s spot.

Omar Bravo – He scored twice, missed a third, and didn’t disappear for that many stretches. Will it be enough to get his passport stamped? Rumor has it, Lavolpe has Daniel Osorno on the plane instead of Bravo.

Chiquis Garcia – Did he really play the whole game? Lavolpe’s son-in-law may get to go only if Lavolpe really feels the need to have a left recovery midfielder. Otherwise its off to the links for the Chiquis.

Alberto Medina – Wasn’t on the field long enough to make an impression. Like we said yesterday, he is the only player who has better than average speed, but it looks like that won’t be enough to make the team. He can try speed golf.

Gringo Castro – May make the team by default because no oneelse has stepped up as a right flanker. He does have tireless stamina, makes good crosses, but has the ball at feet too much.

Israel Lopez – He made the pass to spring Bravo on the game winner. He will either be the last one to make the list or the last one to be cut.

Daniel Osorno – Did not play last night. He has been Lavolpe’s boy since the two were together at Atlas. Is that going to be enough for him to go to Germany? Probably.

Bravo played fairly well but he would be better served by staying on his feet more. I would be nervous if he plays in Germany with the new crackdown on diving.

Totally agree about Davino.

If Bravo goes, I really don’t expect him to play that much. As far as diving, let’s just say he isn’t the only one who needs to worry.

That was almost unwatchable last night. I hope Lavolpe knows what he is doing. This whole Suarez thing is a joke, he lacks pace, always has, even in his prime he was slow.

Please put these players out of their misery:

Duilio, Israel, Chiquis, Zinha, Medina, Emperador, and Blanco.

Move on, we only need so much experience, have enough experience w/ Torrado, Borgetti, Marquez and Pavel.

Lol. Paraguays kit is awful.

Davino.- He is probably the most hated player in Mexico even for America Fans

Suarez.- Definetly going, good game, but I think Lavolpe is taking him to take advantage of his leadership.

Bravo and Castro.- I think they’l be on the lista, thanks for the EA sports FIFA ad.

As for Chiquis, Medina, Lopez and Osorno. Please leave ‘em in Mexico.
