Bofo – short for buffoon

May 15th, 2006 | By: John | 6 Comments »

I was watching the Pachuca – Chivas game yesterday, and switched away when it looked like Chivas were going to win. After 2 Bofo goals in the second half made it 3-1 to complete an improbable comeback against Pachuca, the strongest team in the Clausura, I thought the game was over.

To my astonishment, when I clicked back, I saw the Tuzos jumping in a celebratory circle. What just happened? Mosquera knocks in the goal that takes Pachuca to the final vs. San Luis.

There are two things I take away from the game.

1. Omar Esparza “el gaucho” is a superstar in the making. One of the niños heroes from Peru, Esparza was given an opportunity because of the number of Chivas on the World Cup Squad. Needless to say, he made the most of it. He scored a fantastic goal in the first half.

2. Thank god Bautista is not on the national team. El bofo’s antics were in full display. Is there a bigger drama queen in Mexican soccer? He did score 2 goals, but he missed other chances. His constant diving and idiotic feigning of injury after he tried to get the ball from the Pachuca keeper were deplorable and embarrassing. He acts like he got shot. Does this guy understand that when he really does get fouled, the refs won’t blow the whistle. And this guy wonders why he is not getting ready for Germany.

So it’s a big week for Mexican soccer: The final between San Luis and Pachuca, and Rafa tries to become the first Mexican to be on the winning side of the champions league final.

He is an idiot… a certifiable idiot.

If you play for yourself and not the team, and if you have the wrong attitude, it doesn’t matter how much talent you have because you will self destruct and the shockwaves will affect the teammates. Just ask Jean Pierre Papin, another incredible forward that should have helped France reach the World Cup in 90 and 94 and who decided to freelance and play for himself, and ended up never being a starter in a World Cup and being banned for his antics.

As for the Niños Heroes… I’m so excited about that new generation of players… already about 5 or 6 of them have debuted in the 1st division, some of them being regularly featured in their teams (Villaluz, Araujo, Esparza, Ever Guzman), some others are already training in Europe.

And even more young talent is starting to appear: Landín, Angel Reyna, Guardado…

I think about the U-21 team for the next World Cup for the category and beyond and I can’t help but grin.

I saw Papin score a goal in friendly vs. Belgium in 1992 in the Parc des Princes: a chilena from outside the area. Amazing.

I always laugh when I remember that Papin went to Milan from OM that same year, then OM beats them in CL final.

These type of players are the ones I hate the most, basically because you know the talent is there, but they decide to waste it by trying to gain the spotlight for themselves.

I’m just so happy Bofo is not in the National team. This Sunday just reminded why I didn’t like him in the first place.

The thing is he used to be really good, and has the physical tools to go one on one with European-type players, but where onece he used to stay firm and fight for a ball, now he just dives trying to get a foul.
