Bittersweet week

July 3rd, 2006 | By: John | 16 Comments »

As we all look forward to the upcoming battle of heavyweights in the semi finals, and subsequent final, I always look at this week with mixed feelings: yes, we will be crowning a champion, but then we have to wait another 4 long years before we can do all this again. But the memories of this world cup will stay with us for a long while, and I would like to share my memories as I watched the world cup from Austin, Texas.

So many Mexican fans in the stadium.

The shots of the fans dressed as el chapulin colorado during the Mexico Iran Match.

The passion with which the Mexican fans sang their national anthem.

The joy we all celebrated with the team as we defeated Iran 3-1.

Kikin Fonseca’s tireless efforts.

Rafa Marquez sendinga message to his kid (I assume) after he scored vs. Argentina.

The pain we all felt when Maxi Rodriguez scored the goal of the cup.

Andres Guardado playing like he was in fourth world cup, not his debut.

While the world cup draws to a close this week, I officially cannot wait until 2010 and South Africa’s turn to host the party. Let’s all make palns to be there, eh.

My favorite memory will be after the Argentina game…the world saw the Mexican potential. The chapulins, of course. Hearing all the fans singing Cielito Lindo.

My favorite memory of this WC is seeing Sinha make that sweet header against Iran. My other fond memory is seeing him cry after being eliminated by Argentina; it was then that I realized that Sinha is as Mexican as anyone born in Mexico.

And of course, seeing Oswaldo play his heart out against Iran in memory of his father is another fond memory I’ll have of this WC.

I remember jumping from my couch yelling GOOOOOOLLLLL when Rafa scored that beautiful gol against Argentina, but Argentina scored a beautiful gol at the end. After Argentinas second gol, the air of the stadium was deflated, just like when Albert Pujols hit that homerun against the Astros that stunned everybody, that’s how I felt. I felt bad, I cried because the country of Mexico really needed the team to perform to higher level. Mexico’s team owed that to its fans, to their country. Now, all we have is memories and we ask ourselves “what if”….. what if Cuahutemoc was there, would he have quit like the rest of the team? Imagine Kiki and Cuahu…..

Now I find my self rooting for Portugal, they play with heart and have ice runnnig through their veins…. Francemay not want to go to penalty kicks because that will invoke memories of Platini…. Italy scored 2 beautiful gols against Germany. They knew if they went to penalty kicks it was over…why???? remember Baggio…. Overall it has been a great world cup. I hope South Africa is better and my family and John’s family can meet in South Africa and sing Mexico’s National Anthem….

My fondest memories of Mexicos WC06 appearance will be the Mexico vs Argentina game, definetly the most intense and beautiful football game
thus far. A true rivalry has been born between these two football loving countries…And of course i can not forget “Cielito Lindo” being sung in the Stadiums. It was amazing seeing people singing and rooting for Mexico like they do in the Mexican League games…. Key players:
Rafa MARQUEZ
“Kikin” FONSECA
Andres GUARDADO
Oswaldo SANCHEZ
Ramon MORALES
Carlos SALCIDO
Naelson ZINHA
Ricardo Osorio

We shall return in WC2010 even stronger with our up and coming under-17 champions like Dos Santos and Vela…The future looks bright.

The World Cup is over, congrats to Italy. But I have to say that the Mexicans, especially the game against Argentina were/was great. That game was amazing; they were on fire and went down fighting like true warriors. I was born and raised in England (naturally supporting England), parents are Filipinos but my dad is half Mexican. Admittedly ive felt the England team havent been as good as everyone claims them to be, so my second team to support has always been Mexico since theres practically a non existent football scene in Philippines. I remember the last world cup, an insane header by Borgetti against Italy got me really rooting for Mexico since then. Especially this WC, i LOVED the fans and passion with which they sang the national anthem. I found myself feeling a sense of pride for them and for myself despite being only part mexican. And although i dont know much about my mexican side and culture, when it comes to international games, im mexican! While everyone here wears brazil and argentina tops cos theyre ‘cool’ teams and ’sooo fashionable’,I go out proudly with my mexico top. Its like ‘mexico who?’ here. They may not be known as a world class team like argentina and european countries, but to me they are. I actually had more faith in them than i did for England this WC. The Iran game was a great opening game for mexico, i was jumping up and down screaming! The mexicans play with such spirit (that i wish england had) and right now i think theyre on the verge of becoming a world class team, and have made their mark with that argentina game. Every1 else said argentina would thrash mexico but hah, how wrong they were.
All in all, even though mexico never seem to get far internationally, they were and are a great team with some cool players, a lot of guts and spirit. Im sure in the future, they’ll step their game up. Come on 2010!!

Kunoichi, nicely said. Keep rocking the Mexico gear because next time around we’re gonna be stronger than ever! If you’re interested, pay attention to the kids that are coming up from the U17 World Champions. There is some great talent that will sooner or later be seen by the rest of the world.

Yeh so I’ve heard, I wish I saw them win the U-17 cup. A few of them will be playing for European clubs isnt it? If so thats real good news cos Mexico need more players with experience in European leagues like Argentina and Brazil. I think Mexicos home-grown talent and spirit coupled with European experience is the way to go for the national team. I cant wait to see them play.
Anyways do you know when the next Mexico match/friendly is? I missed the confed cup last year, wish I saw them when they beat Brazil. I never know when they’re playing, probably because they wouldn’t broadcast it here anyway unless theyre against a European team, it ain’t fair!

The central american and caribean games will start tomorrow. The U20 team will be playing. I think you’ll probably be able to see it on the internet.
