Barcelona may hold key to Mexico’s future

June 30th, 2006 | By: John | 27 Comments »

It may not happen in 5 years, or even 10. But around the 2022 world cup, the Mexican roster may include more european professionals than local professionals for the first time. The reason could very well be Barcelona’s 3 soccer academies in Mexico.

The Catalan club has opened Academies in Guadalajara, Monterrey and San Luis Potosi. They will scour the country for talent, and fill the academy with promising players. As they develop the youngsters, they would likely take the absolute best to their main academy in Spain. They would play on the junior teams, much like the dos Santos boys are doing now. As properties of Barcelona, the club can keep the players, or transfer them to other european teams, maybe even Mexican sides.

The best part about this is that these great players will have the opportunity to play in top flight leagues without having to deal with they myopic and greedy Mexican clubs that would get in the way of their development and subsequent success.

So if Mexico go into USA 2022 as a favorite, chances may be that some of coach Rafa Marquez’ boys may have gotten their start at the Barcelona Academies. The Blaugrana may do more for the success of Mexican soccer than anyone else.

The wheels are in motion thanks to Barcelona. Now its only a matter of time before other clubs take notice and start doing the same. Unfortunately the Mexican league will probably suffer in the short term.

Actually… Real Madrid started some of those before Barcelona did.

There are three Real Madrid football schools in Mexico. One in Mexico City, one in Guadalajara and another one in Monterrey.

http://www.realmadrid.com.mx/

There is also the Johan Cruyff University Mexico that offers the International Master in Football Business and Administration and the Diploma in Sports Business Management which are the only type of program of its kind in the Americas

http://www.cruyffacademics.org/eng/index.asp

And let us not forget about the Universidad de Futbol founded by Pachuca:

I think there are several cornerstones already in place to help pick up the talent that many clubs are missing, spcially all those skilled kids in the llanos and amateur leagues that do not have the money or connections to play in one of the established traditional soccer schools.

we’ll see what happens with that, but in the mean time mexico needs to worry about the next soccer world cup, not the one in 2022. :D

It will get decided soon. Most likely it will be Brazil.

My point of this entry is to show that Mexican clubs have to make a real committment to further the cause of Mexican soccer. With Barcelona’s academies in Mexico, they can bypass the club BS that plagues Mexico right now and hinders the growth of players who can really benefit from playing overseas. But since the academies are relatively new, we won’t see any real results for at least 5 to 10 years.

But it is an encouraging sign to see Cruz Azul step up and help Osorio get to the Bundesliga.

Also,

Brazil is a heavy favorite for the 2014 cup, but they are going to have to completely renovate most of if not all of their stadiums. i.e. add single seats instead of benches, as FIFA demands.

Speaking of which… Efrain Juarez, one of the kids who won the U-17 championship, signed to start playing with the Segunda A team for Barcelona while he gets his residency papers in order. His contract is for 3 years…

There is another Real Madrid youth school in Puebla in UDLA (Unversidad de las Américas). It opened like 2 years ago.

Can anyone in here give your opinion about Mexico’s National Team in the next four years. I think it’s going to be very impressing with new younger strikers like Vela, Dos Santos, and other younger players. Most of the Mexican SUB-17 players are being recruited in Spain. I am very fond about it. I also hope the same with the USA. Mexico and the US needs to work together meeting the quality of soccer like those in the South America in order to be as competitive like Brazil and other Europeans nations. I love both the US and Mexico. Best of luck for both of them.

First, I do not see playing in Europe as the maximum for Mexican players. The Mexican league pays very well, so our players have no need to go there, like other countries. What pride that Mexico players play in Mexico, while other teams such as Iran, Ghana etc play in Europe. I think only Italy or Germany can say their players stay in their country. Mexico should instead IMPORT more players. Now, we have limits on how many international players on each team. I would like to see Mexico sign players from Trinidad, Iran, Africa etc Why not the young guys who played the last warm-up game!

Secondly, I can guarantee right now that the next World Cup will not be in South Africa! We already know FIFA has a plan, and I agree South Africa is not ready and not accessible…World Cup 2010 – Mexico/USA!!!

I am a firm beleiver that there are too many foreigners playing in Mexico. 5 per starting 11 is too many. Most teams use their slots for attacking players. It begs the question. Is this one of the reasons for Mexico’s lack of scoring punch. I say yes.

Lory,
I don’t know about that! Because it will be held in South Africa, which means that all of the African National teams will be very confidence playing in the next four years for sure. Maybe or maybe not. Look what happened in Germany 2006, all of the finalist were Europeans, and not one from South American. All of the Superpower house are being dominated by newer generations of players from other countries for sure. It’s will be an interesting game in the next four years.

Bulgatti, what I mean is that the World Cup WILL NOT be in S. Africa. They have too many internal problems, plus S. africa is not easy to go to for the teams or fans. It was reported that Australia, Mexico, and USA are the choices to take over when S. Africa can’t do it. But my opinion, Australia is also too far away [nobody wants to fly 15 hours] and the timezone is not acceptable. Therefore, if FIFA allows, Mexico/USA can host jointly. I know they do not want joint hosts again, so Mexico has a slight advantage, in my opinion.

John, 5 in 11? I did not realize. Need to rethink my theories.

Spanish academies in mexico are a bad idea. Mexico will be world champions when they build a team of street players. People with colmillo people with oficio who are cancheros like temo, bofo and kikin and salcido
